Dan Aykroyd takes UFOs out for a spin
    #5691002 - 05/30/06 02:57 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060530/en_nm/aykroyd_dc_2:

Quote:

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Dan Aykroyd has a new video on the market, but the ex-conehead and one-time ghost-buster says he's not the star. The UFOs are.

"My recommendation is to skip through me and get to the film footage, the digital images," he said on Tuesday, talking about the 90-minute "Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs" from Union Station Media.

"This is where the whole thing starts to become more credible," he said of footage of unidentified flying objects from around the world.

"This is the real stuff. I'm not alone on this. There are many, many people interested in UFOs," he said.

The DVD, which went on sale Tuesday, is a conversation between Aykroyd and UFO expert David Sereda interspersed with footage of unexplained objects in flight and comments from experts like former astronaut Gordon Cooper. There are no jokes.

Asked if he was worried that a comic actor might not be taken seriously discussing an edgy subject like extra-terrestrial visitors, he said "It's not a concern."

"Enough people know I've had an interest in this for years," he said, speaking from New York. "People know I'm interested in the paranormal."

Aykroyd said he has had two personal encounters with the unknown.

One occurred on Martha's Vineyard, he said, where he sighted "high altitude, glowing magnesium discs traveling at 20,000 miles an hour at 100,000 feet (30,480 meters). ... wing to wing, edge to edge."

Four people with him saw the same thing, he said, and while one expert later told him it was probably a meteor formation of some sort "I believe they were visiting the earth, passing by on the way to somewhere else."

"The second was a telepathic experience," he said, which happened at a lake retreat in Canada.

"I was asleep with my wife and I woke up about 3 a.m. wanting to go outside into a field and look at the sky," he said, telling his wife, "They want me to see. They want me to see." She told him to forget it.

The next morning, he said, newspapers and radio reports from across the region were filled with eyewitness accounts from some of the estimated 12,000 people who saw a pink spiral in the sky.

The military later said it was a Chinese rocket, Aykroyd said, but he believes he was being summoned and regrets ignoring the call.

Alrighty!  Let the discussion begin.  Pro, con, it doesn't matter.  What is your take on this?  Is Dan Aykroyd YATFHWN (yet another tinfoil hat wearing nut) or is he a brave soul coming out of the UFO closet?

Statements that strike me odd:

Quote:

Please explain how one knows the altitude and velocity of an object on the edge of space?  Please explain to me how one could see the wing of an object traveling at 20,000 miles per hour (26 times the speed of sound, 6 times faster than a speeding bullet) or how one could make out much of any detail at all on something 100,000 feet (19 miles) away?  Let us not forget about the atmosphere causing distortion as well.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't...   Actually, I have had some pretty strange experiences happen to me over the years.  Things that are much more odd than this.  Nutty or not, I can relate to this.  The parts where he embraces pseudo-science are a different matter.

P.S. I made an intentional mistake/misleading statement in my "scientific analysis".  I'm guessing MAIA will see it, but what about the rest?

What part makes him seem like he's wearing a tinfoil hat, seems to me like he's against the tin foil.

I watched a UFO video where he was the presenter on google video's a while back, it was all nasa and russian video footage good stuff if you ask me

how does one become an official "ufo expert?"

the most "experts" ive seen all appeared to be upper-middle class with too much free time.

In Aykroyd's case, he has spent a lot of time and money researching the subject. Of the few that have a right to be called an "ufo expert", Dan Aykroyd is probably one of them. However, I doubt that he is an unbiased expert. Want is powerful.

What makes you doubt he is unbiased?

Are you not being bias yourself by judging him to not be?

I do agree, that what he has stated is quite odd. But the important thing here is that the footage is real - even if Aykroyd is bias.

Compared to the "ufo experts" that sit on the couch watching the latest hollywood UFO conspiracy flick before running to the internet to release their newest discovered facts upon the ignorant public... yes.

You left out "research" from my quote. A bit misleading. The actual line was:

"he has spent a lot of time and money researching the subject"

.. so time + money facilitates research which can lead to expertise

Dan Aykroyd and Richard Belzer need their own show on Sci-Fi or perhaps the food network, 'Nuts' sounds like a good working title. They are both great comedians

I assumed he meant bright, but yeah, that is the gripe I have with "pseudo-science". It sounds much more impressive when you can identify a scientific sounded word to use when describing something. Even being able to tell the difference between a disc and a sphere or ring at the velocity and distance given would be impressive.

what i was getting at, is that this "research" tends to overlap other "research."

I am not a a disbeliever. in fact, I very much believe in Unidentified Flying Objects. In fact, I believe in UOs in general, forget the flying part. The reason I am a little harsh is the fact that Akroyd has no doubt been influenced in his view on the subject from his own career, with movies such as "Coneheads" and "My Stepmother is an Alien."

It's my own personal vice that I have problems giving credit to anyone other than those dubbed as "scientists," while at the same time understanding how pointless it is to distribute titles and the such. However, none of that dismisses the fact that a majority of these theories are based on theoretical concepts, assumptions and as its called, "psuedo-science."

I guess it all depends on the size of the object. Of course i'd take those measurements with a grain of salt, it all seems to be too empirical, more like an estimate. The distortion in the atmosphere can also be one more variable to consider, as it might give the illusion on the target moving faster than it actually is. Anyway, he could have used a pair of binoculars

Yeah and most scientists won't touch the subject with a barge pole.

I thought lots of scientists have been looking at the issue for round about 100 years now and, finding nothing, finally gave up.

Eh, what do I know.

Supose these creatures don't want to be discovered, why would you find then?

It's easy for a human to hide from a stupid cow.

Really, the whole UFO phenomenon makes sense only when you are willing to go through with the whole idea, then it all makes sense, instead of just touching the idea in some way most compatible to ones way of thinking

Most skeptics would base their questions about aliens around some basic idea like: they have come from far away, they are peacefull, we
could greet them, exchange ideas etc.

Well what if there are more of these races? What if they are at war? What if some of them are using us? What if some of them created us? What if some of them are aincient creators of the earth ecosystem?

When you start asking crazy questions like that, only then does it start making sense.

A race of gray visitors from far away just makes no sense. And that's what skeptics are holding on to more than the believers.

Science isn't anecdotal evidence, but absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence, though the burden of proof is on the claim and not its opposite.

Exactly. If a human wants to hide from a cow, the cow doesn't stand a chance of seeing the human. Not the slightest chance.

And if the human DID want to be seen by the cow, the cow would have little choice but to see the human.

are they? UFO sightings are pretty rare, the explicit ones at least. I've never seen one in my whole life.

And why do they sometimes are seen? Well they are not omnipotent. Even cow can sometimes see a sneaking human if he screwes up

And besides how many people are watching skies all the time anyway? Nobody cares, and nobody believes.

And as for those that do watch skies with instruments, like military, nasa etc. well they certainly wouldn't tell you if they knew.
