Dan Aykroyd takes UFOs out for a spin

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060530/en_nm/aykroyd_dc_2:
Quote:
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Dan Aykroyd has a new video on the market, but the ex-conehead and one-time ghost-buster says he's not the star. The UFOs are.
"My recommendation is to skip through me and get to the film footage, the digital images," he said on Tuesday, talking about the 90-minute "Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs" from Union Station Media.
"This is where the whole thing starts to become more credible," he said of footage of unidentified flying objects from around the world.
"This is the real stuff. I'm not alone on this. There are many, many people interested in UFOs," he said.
The DVD, which went on sale Tuesday, is a conversation between Aykroyd and UFO expert David Sereda interspersed with footage of unexplained objects in flight and comments from experts like former astronaut Gordon Cooper. There are no jokes.
Asked if he was worried that a comic actor might not be taken seriously discussing an edgy subject like extra-terrestrial visitors, he said "It's not a concern."
"Enough people know I've had an interest in this for years," he said, speaking from New York. "People know I'm interested in the paranormal."
Aykroyd said he has had two personal encounters with the unknown.
One occurred on Martha's Vineyard, he said, where he sighted "high altitude, glowing magnesium discs traveling at 20,000 miles an hour at 100,000 feet (30,480 meters). ... wing to wing, edge to edge."
Four people with him saw the same thing, he said, and while one expert later told him it was probably a meteor formation of some sort "I believe they were visiting the earth, passing by on the way to somewhere else."
"The second was a telepathic experience," he said, which happened at a lake retreat in Canada.
"I was asleep with my wife and I woke up about 3 a.m. wanting to go outside into a field and look at the sky," he said, telling his wife, "They want me to see. They want me to see." She told him to forget it.
The next morning, he said, newspapers and radio reports from across the region were filled with eyewitness accounts from some of the estimated 12,000 people who saw a pink spiral in the sky.
The military later said it was a Chinese rocket, Aykroyd said, but he believes he was being summoned and regrets ignoring the call.
Alrighty! Let the discussion begin. Pro, con, it doesn't matter. What is your take on this? Is Dan Aykroyd YATFHWN (yet another tinfoil hat wearing nut) or is he a brave soul coming out of the UFO closet?
Statements that strike me odd:
Quote:
One occurred on Martha's Vineyard, he said, where he sighted "high altitude, glowing magnesium discs traveling at 20,000 miles an hour at 100,000 feet (30,480 meters). ... wing to wing, edge to edge."
Please explain how one knows the altitude and velocity of an object on the edge of space? Please explain to me how one could see the wing of an object traveling at 20,000 miles per hour (26 times the speed of sound, 6 times faster than a speeding bullet) or how one could make out much of any detail at all on something 100,000 feet (19 miles) away? Let us not forget about the atmosphere causing distortion as well.
Quote:
"I was asleep with my wife and I woke up about 3 a.m. wanting to go outside into a field and look at the sky," he said, telling his wife, "They want me to see. They want me to see." She told him to forget it.
Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't... Actually, I have had some pretty strange experiences happen to me over the years. Things that are much more odd than this. Nutty or not, I can relate to this. The parts where he embraces pseudo-science are a different matter.
P.S. I made an intentional mistake/misleading statement in my "scientific analysis". I'm guessing MAIA will see it, but what about the rest?

What part makes him seem like he's wearing a tinfoil hat, seems to me like he's against the tin foil.
I watched a UFO video where he was the presenter on google video's a while back, it was all nasa and russian video footage good stuff if you ask me

how does one become an official "ufo expert?"
the most "experts" ive seen all appeared to be upper-middle class with too much free time.

In Aykroyd's case, he has spent a lot of time and money researching the subject. Of the few that have a right to be called an "ufo expert", Dan Aykroyd is probably one of them. However, I doubt that he is an unbiased expert. Want is powerful.

What makes you doubt he is unbiased?
Are you not being bias yourself by judging him to not be?
I do agree, that what he has stated is quite odd. But the important thing here is that the footage is real - even if Aykroyd is bias.

Compared to the "ufo experts" that sit on the couch watching the latest hollywood UFO conspiracy flick before running to the internet to release their newest discovered facts upon the ignorant public... yes.
You left out "research" from my quote. A bit misleading. The actual line was:
"he has spent a lot of time and money researching the subject"
.. so time + money facilitates research which can lead to expertise

Dan Aykroyd and Richard Belzer need their own show on Sci-Fi or perhaps the food network, 'Nuts' sounds like a good working title. They are both great comedians

I assumed he meant bright, but yeah, that is the gripe I have with "pseudo-science". It sounds much more impressive when you can identify a scientific sounded word to use when describing something. Even being able to tell the difference between a disc and a sphere or ring at the velocity and distance given would be impressive.

what i was getting at, is that this "research" tends to overlap other "research."
I am not a a disbeliever. in fact, I very much believe in Unidentified Flying Objects. In fact, I believe in UOs in general, forget the flying part. The reason I am a little harsh is the fact that Akroyd has no doubt been influenced in his view on the subject from his own career, with movies such as "Coneheads" and "My Stepmother is an Alien."
It's my own personal vice that I have problems giving credit to anyone other than those dubbed as "scientists," while at the same time understanding how pointless it is to distribute titles and the such. However, none of that dismisses the fact that a majority of these theories are based on theoretical concepts, assumptions and as its called, "psuedo-science."

I guess it all depends on the size of the object. Of course i'd take those measurements with a grain of salt, it all seems to be too empirical, more like an estimate. The distortion in the atmosphere can also be one more variable to consider, as it might give the illusion on the target moving faster than it actually is. Anyway, he could have used a pair of binoculars

Supose these creatures don't want to be discovered, why would you find then?
It's easy for a human to hide from a stupid cow.
Really, the whole UFO phenomenon makes sense only when you are willing to go through with the whole idea, then it all makes sense, instead of just touching the idea in some way most compatible to ones way of thinking
Most skeptics would base their questions about aliens around some basic idea like: they have come from far away, they are peacefull, we could greet them, exchange ideas etc.
Well what if there are more of these races? What if they are at war? What if some of them are using us? What if some of them created us? What if some of them are aincient creators of the earth ecosystem?
When you start asking crazy questions like that, only then does it start making sense.
A race of gray visitors from far away just makes no sense. And that's what skeptics are holding on to more than the believers.

Exactly. If a human wants to hide from a cow, the cow doesn't stand a chance of seeing the human. Not the slightest chance.
And if the human DID want to be seen by the cow, the cow would have little choice but to see the human.

are they? UFO sightings are pretty rare, the explicit ones at least. I've never seen one in my whole life.
And why do they sometimes are seen? Well they are not omnipotent. Even cow can sometimes see a sneaking human if he screwes up
And besides how many people are watching skies all the time anyway? Nobody cares, and nobody believes.
And as for those that do watch skies with instruments, like military, nasa etc. well they certainly wouldn't tell you if they knew.

I can think of a half dozen Shroomerites who claim to have seen one up close and personal.
And as for those that do watch skies with instruments, like military, nasa etc. well they certainly wouldn't tell you if they knew.
All of NASA's science is in the public domain.
Besides, NASA and the military are not the only ones with space observing instruments. What about all the academic institutions around the world which are not connected to NASA or under any government control? The first organization to produce hard evidence of aliens would have guaranteed lifetime mega-funding, prestige, media coverage and all the other goodies that would go with such a discovery.

I have seen dozens of UFOs... well, maybe not dozens, but a lot. Just because it is flying, and unidentified, does not mean that it is an alien ship from the planet Zabuloid, here to snack on cow guts. Preaching to the choir. I am guessing, as a pilot, that you have seen quiet a lot of oddness as well. I am also guessing, as a scientifically oriented person, that you don't immediately jump to the alien encounter claim every time you see something odd. The difference between critical thinking and wanting to believe...
> All of NASA's science is in the public domain.
Not true. Some of NASA's science is classified. Actually, I need to be careful how I state this. I don't know if the science at NASA is classified, but I do know that NASA will facilitate classified projects for other agencies. It has been a while, but I don't think any of the work I did with NASA was classified.

Well Diploid, you do have a few valid points here, but really it doesn't mean anything for certain and can't be taken as evidence against existence of these creatures.
If the world wasn't full of myths, legends and religions that could support the idea of existence of extraterrestrials, I'd gladly discuss the issue within that frame, but I am simply too overwhelmed by indications from all sides to be affected by your arguments.
I find that the existence of extraterrestrials is a key that nails two (or more) flies with one hit, it gives sense of every mistery human race has ever had. It can make sense of modern experiences with UFO's, of aincient myths of fairies and goblins, of jewish/christian gods and angels, of indian legends and and many more, and non of it defies science anymore. It's just too good to be untrue.

> and can't be taken as evidence against existence of these creatures.
It isn't meant to be. Science doesn't require him to prove a negative. He can sit back and say they probably don't exist because in 10,000 years of recorded human history nobody has ever had one to prove that they do exist. The burden of proof is on the people claiming that aliens exist, not on the skeptic.
> and non of it defies science anymore.
Yes it does defy science. Science requires the scientific method be applied, a hypothesis created, and a conclusion proven or disproven based on experiments related to the hypothesis.
> It's just too good to be untrue.
Fortunately, science doesn't care about what is too good to be true or untrue. Science cares about facts.
> I stand corrected.
Not sure. I might have been wrong, not you. As I said, all of the work I can remember was not classified. Anything that I know of that was classified was through another agency; NASA simply helped (by launching the craft into space, etc).

We can apply the scientific method only if we are in control of the experiment. But are we in control of hundred of ships filmed and photographed ? How can you prove a manifestation you're unable to verify and quantify ? ... and it is there, in front of your eyes !
We are the experiment, we are the guinea pigs. The scientific method is being applied on us ...
We have come a long way since the anthropocentric idea in Galileo's time, but i think we still have the same attitude problem: there's no one else in the universe but us.

I cannot imagine that we are alone in the universe. The universe is much, much too large for us to be the only life out there. However, the size of the universe (and time itself) is what makes it extremly unlikely that any of the other life out there has been here for a visit.

> We have no idea how to travel quickly between the stars.....
Sorry if I trust Einstein over Aykroyd and company when science is concerned. Sure, it would be great if life was not constrained by reality, but unfortunately, we can not simply wish for something to be simple and easy and all the sudden it happens.
Look at it this way:
1) an alien race is soooo advanced, they can travel between stars in a blink of the eye 2) an alien race is soooo advanced, they cannot remain hidden from simple, stupid, arrogant humans
Either they are advanced or they are not. If they are advanced, and want to remain hidden, then why do we keep seeing them. If they are not advanced enough to stay hidden, then how did they get here? If they don't care about remaining hidden, then why don't they come out and say hello?

Either they are advanced or they are not.
Regarding your argument, that's a false dichotomy. Well, i'm sure you knew you were incurring into a fallacy
Anyway, i know there are strong arguments denying the existence of aliens. Even if we accept their existence, we don't even know from where they are, much less their intentions or agenda. I believe they are advanced races, but like humans, they just aren't perfect.

I can think of MANY reasons for that behavior.
Perhaps they are trying to get us to figure it out on our own........nudge us in the right direction.......get us thinking "outside the box"
If there are aliens watching us, trying to nudge us in the right direction. They couldn't just land on the White House lawn......It would completely shatter our egotistical world view.
Our warlike, barbaric race, that has it's greatest wars over the concept of "God"...would be thrown into chaos at the realization that we were just an experiment with the local primates.
A test to see if they could control the fate/evolution of a species.
Use your imagination and many other explanations can come from this erratic behavior we have been seeing in the sky for centuries, not just in our lifetime.
We think we have it all figured out....yet we keep seeing, all thru our history (even before air travel was invented), strange things in the sky, that we can't explain.
What other explanation is there....many....but you can't say for certain that it is NOT alien activity, just as much as I can't say that it IS alien in origin.
But to completely close your mind, to the possibility of alien visitation, is just foolish/arrogance.

Thats a dualistic outlook and not the reality.
Firstly who cares what Einstein knows - if these beings are advanced enough then they can travel space, thats a fact because we can do it ourselves!
We can't assume how good their ships are because we only know how good ours are.
Secondly, you can't just lump these ideas together
Quote:
1) an alien race is soooo advanced, they can travel between stars in a blink of the eye 2) an alien race is soooo advanced, they cannot remain hidden from simple, stupid, arrogant humans
Maybe they don't care if they get seen by people or not. Maybe there are many different species visiting whom have different levels of interactment with us.
They don't have to hide theirselves that much because they are that more advanced!
Why do you assume within your arguement that they must be intelligent and hidden or not intelligent?

Every generation of science-fans believes science has reached its peak right now, and that what can't be explained right now can't exist. What's funny is, people who advance science are those with imagination, with the ability to imagine the "impossible", the rest are just stopping its progress.
There will be a thousand Einsteins more, and each of them will blow the mind of the previous one, and will suprize the human race with his discovery.
