Re: The Gaia Hypothesis [Re: GulGen]

If you came across a being that closely resembled a human that was obviously self-aware, could think and communicate, was organically and naturally created, etc.; would you refuse to consider it alive if it were a unique being that could not reproduce?

If such a creature is discovered, science will do what it does best and self-adjust to the new information. Until then, it's made up new age junk, unsupported by a shred of evidence, and worthy of no more credence than the FSM.

You may choose to use the scientific definition, others may choose to use another, more intuitive one.

See, this is one of my biggest gripes about mystic-heads. They're constantly sticking their nose into the business of science (biology, in this case) and making up ignorant definitions without the first clue about how biology studies life. Meanwhile, you never see scientists trying to tell the pope what kind of candles to use in church.

Why not stick to things you know and leave biology to biologists?

?If I don't understand Quantum Mechanics or Relativity the last thing I should reasonably expect to be able to do is get away with criticising it as though my opinion had as much weight as that of a person who spent a professional lifetime studying it. Yet, alone amongst the sciences, the theory of evolution is considered fair game for criticism by people of any level of ignorance.

In the middle ages at least people had an excuse for such ignorance. In this age of high technology and scientific breakthoughs, the ingrained, bigoted and ill-thought out repostes to evolution can only be described as willful ignorance. And that's the worst kind.? --Richard Dawkins

Why not stick to things you know and leave biology to biologists?

Yes, God forbid anyone think about something related to biology without at least a doctorate under their belts! Oh, what fools we all are!

See, this is one of my biggest gripes about mystic-heads. They're constantly sticking their nose into the business of science (biology, in this case) and making up ignorant definitions without the first clue about how biology studies life.

See, this is one of my biggest gripes about logic-heads. They're constantly sticking their nose into the business of idle philosophizing and enforcing scientific definitions without the first clue about how mystic-heads study things. And they seem to think that they're a lot more knowledgeable just because they're playing the side of science.

And who said anything about caring how biology studies life? Or any science for that matter? Mystic-heads, as I understand the term, aren't really the type to constrain themselves to strict a scientific understanding of the world, especially in grey areas. There's a big difference between pondering the similarities between the Earth and life as we know it, and claiming that gravity does not exist.

Being a mystic-head isn't about disagreeing with science (aside from the occasional extreme individuals / groups), but augmenting it, fleshing out one's understanding of the world. And, if done intelligently, not being particularly dogmatic nor literal about any of it that can't be substantiated.  Mystic-heads need not be ignorant fools, as appealing as that stereotype may be.

Meanwhile, you never see scientists trying to tell the pope what kind of candles to use in church.

I concede the point. Scientists are obviously morally superior to any person who holds or tries to discuss beliefs that are not entirely in agreement by the scientific community, despite the fact that scientists alone are absolutely correct, complete, and objective arbitrators of truth.

I didn't notice any mystic-heads here telling you what to believe or do, so I don't quite get the analogy. This is a discussion, not an inquisition. Well, not an inquisition being perpetrated by the mystic-heads, anyway...

I'm not suggesting people who don't know science not discuss science. But if you're going to talk about science, then do it in that context. Don't make up definitions for words biologists have established meanings for.

And who said anything about caring how biology studies life?

Again, if you're going to discuss life, it behooves you to understand the framework in which it's studied; the framework developed by people who dedicate their careers to studying it. Anything less is ignorant jabbering at the level biology was hundreds of years ago when the discipline knew as much about life as the non-biologist knows today.

Saying that a rock is alive is what people said in the middle ages. Today we know better. Why not start the discussion at the state of the art instead of where we were a thousand years ago?

I didn't notice any mystic-heads here telling you what to believe or do, so I don't quite get the analogy.

The analogy is that mystic-heads insist on discussing issues of science without knowing science.

without the first clue about how mystic-heads study things

Mystic-heads do not study things.

Mystic-heads just make things up at a whim, usually contradicting themselves and every other mystic whose whimsical explanations of how things work are arbitrarily made up too.

just because science studies something does not mean one must take a scientific aproach to discussion of that subject. Science has studied just about everything there is to discuss these days man be realistic. What it "knows" is a matter of opinion in many cases. Do not get me wrong science is useful it has its purposes but the purpose of us is not science.

alright I can understand most of your arguments in this thread, but this paragraph really pissed me off man. LIFE is not science's realm. Science may study it, and think they understand it make up names and words for different parts of things in nature, but LIFE is beyond the grasp of any scientist. LIFE is unexplainable, and as such it lies in the realms of God. When a sciencetist acts like it better understands LIFE than a normal person they are saying they better know GOD. Do you see MYSTICS running around telling physicists(a PRACTICAL science) how to make nuclear reactors, or what to call a nuclear reaction? No because for the average believer physics is out of their realm.

Science cannot and will not ever be able to answer everything. Do not fool youself.

Starting at teh state of the art is what most mystics do that really pisses you guys off for one thing, and there is no garuntee "the state of the art" is going to be "true" only a few years from now. You science folk have a bad habit of always being sure, and immediate amnesia of any of your past. These two do not go together well. I have never said a rock is alive only that it can be affected by and is connected to the life which lives on it.

I read science news every single day, they are very interesting here is one of my fav sites www.livescience.com the articles are well written. Because one uses and understands sciences practicality does not contradict one believing in the unprovable.

here is a good Einstien quote

"Religion without science is blind, but science without religion is lame."

Einstien believed in God, it was this belief that was the driving force behind his greatest SCIENTIFIC achievments. He aspired to create a theory of everything because he felt it would put humans closer to God. something to think about man. peace

Here's what Wikipedia has to say on the subject:

Quote:
Although there is no universal agreement on the definition of life, the generally accepted biological manifestations are that life exhibits the following phenomena:

  • Organization - Living things are comprised of one or more cells, which are the basic units of life.

  • Metabolism - Metabolism produces energy by converting nonliving material into cellular components (synthesis) and decomposing organic matter (catalysis). Living things require energy to maintain internal organization (homeostasis) and to produce the other phenomena associated with life.

  • Growth - Growth results from a higher rate of synthesis than catalysis. A growing organism increases in size in all of its parts, rather than simply accumulating matter.

  • Adaptation - Adaption is the accommodation of a living organism to its environment. It is fundamental to the process of evolution and is determined by the individual's heredity.

  • Response to stimuli - A response can take many forms, from the contraction of a unicellular organism when touched to complex reactions involving all the senses of higher animals. Plants also respond to stimuli, but usually in ways very different from animals. A response is often expressed by motion: the leaves of a plant turning toward the sun or an animal chasing its prey.

  • Reproduction - The division of one cell to form two new cells is reproduction. Usually the term is applied to the production of a new individual (either asexually, from a single parent organism, or sexually, from two differing parent organisms), although strictly speaking it also describes the production of new cells in the process of growth.

All life on Earth is based on the chemistry of carbon compounds. Some assert that this must be the case for all possible forms of life throughout the universe; others describe this position as 'carbon chauvinism'.

    Exceptions to the conventional definition

It is important to note that life is a definition that applies at the level of species, so even though many individuals of any given species do not reproduce, possibly because they belong to specialised sterile castes (such as ant workers), these are still considered forms of life. One could say that the property of life is inherited; hence, sterile hybrid species such as the mule are considered life although not themselves capable of reproduction. It is also worth noting that non-reproducing individuals may still help the spread of their genes through such mechanisms as kin selection.

For similar reasons, viruses and aberrant prion proteins are often considered replicators rather than forms of life: they cannot reproduce without very specialised substrates such as host cells or proteins, respectively. However, most forms of life rely on foods produced by other species, or at least the specific chemistry of the Earth.

Viruses reproduce, flames grow, some software programs mutate and evolve, future software programs will probably evince (even high-order) behavior, machines move, and some form of proto-life consisting of metabolizing cells without the ability to reproduce presumably existed. Still, some would not call these entities alive. Generally, all six characteristics are required for a population to be considered a lifeform.

How would that work with the "life is inherited" idea?  What "gave birth" to Gaia?  What other examples within the "species" of planets, or relatives of a hybrid, can we point to as capable of reproduction?

I don't think that biological concepts can be used effectively to prove that the Earth is alive.   That doesn't mean it is untrue, just unprovable.

how is this gaia hypothesis any different than any other religion in the world? who are we to go around telling people that their beliefs are wrong simply because we believe our beliefs are correct? if you believe in god, then god exists for you. if you believe in gaia, then gaia exists for you.

spirituality is a way for somebody to comprehend the otherwise inexplicable aspects of reality.
science is a way for somebody to comprehend the otherwise inexplicable aspects of reality.

scientific "facts" are no different than "facts" from any other religious texts. they were both written by someone who believed them to be true. that doesn't make either one true or false.

scientific method is just another form of prayer.

Gayas reproduction ? No, we just stated that it is not nescessary to have reproduction to be alive. If yes, the better.

Relative to the exceptions mentioned in the Wiki article, the only way that biology could be used to define the Earth as alive is if it fit the parameters of the exceptions.

    1. The Earth/Gaia is not a "sterile caste" within a species which is capable of reproduction.

    2. The Earth/Gaia is not a hybrid of two other species which are capable of reproduction.

    3. We cannot point to another living species which gave birth to the Earth/Gaia.

As I said, this does NOT mean that the Earth is not alive, but it does mean that there is no known scientific basis for such a claim.
