Why does life reproduce itself?

Seriously, why? I've never heard of a lifeform that doesn't somehow replicate itself. Why is this? The instinct is so strong in humans that many people freak out if they don't get sex. They literally have to have it. Animals are the same way. Plants reproduce. Single celled organisms split themselves into multiple copies. Even viruses, who lack their own cells, find ways to copy themselves. I haven't figured this out yet. No one I've ever talked to had any ideas. Does anyone here have any thoughts on the subject?

The same reason a rock doesn't reproduce itself...it's just the way it is.  I don't think there is any real answer for this...reproduction has been going on for so long that it is hard-wired in to every living thing. :shrug:

It's very weird. :lol:

Some life doesnt reproduce dude.  I have yet to reproduce.

If you mean a species then obviously they would go extinct if they didn't reproduce.  Since all the species we see arnt extinct, they must reproduce themselves.

Can you give an example of a lifeform that didn't reproduce?

Reproducing is one of the defining characteristics of life.  If it doesnt reproduce, its not defined as life.

Remember, the difference between life and non-life is an arbitrary distinction made by man (for good purpose).

Life predates definitions. It is an arbitrary distinction and to me that makes it kind of irrelevant. In the beginning, before there was a such thing as a definition, there was a thing, or multiple things (I wasn't there so I don't know which), and this thing(s) made more of itself. Why?

Some of it didn't.  The life that did reproduce led to us, so we inherited the drive to reproduce further.

Looks like you dont want an answer and are just beating around the bush in some effort to prove god or something...  Thats just what it looks like to me.  :shrug:

It looks to me like, for one thing, I'm getting answers as to why we now feel the need to reproduce, the answer being that what came before us did it and so we inherited the urge, which isn't really what I'm asking. And anyway, where did the urge come from? Just because things before us did it? My parents drink coffee, so did their parents, and their parents' parents, so shouldn't I drink it too by that logic? I don't drink it though, so to me that answer is pretty much refuted. And the best answer I've seen so far as to why things ever reproduced to begin with (because something had to be the first to do it), which is essentially what I'm asking, is "because they could". This also doesn't really constitute an answer.

Where did anyone mention anything about God?

You're essentially looking for a "first cause", but in this case not for the beginning of the universe, just for the beginning of reproduction.  None of us can possibly answer this.  It happened because it happened.

I'm asking the question from a philosophical standpoint. It's akin to asking "what is the meaning of life" in that it isn't a matter of concrete facts and science, and no one can really answer the question definitively, once and for all, for everyone. I'm looking for some kind of philosophical discussion about this question. That's why I put it in the philosophy forum.
