Except that you would directly be contributing to global overpopulation, which is already a very big problem.

Actually, it isn't. It is the distribution of resources which is the problem. There are sufficient resources to reasonably support all the people alive today. And it is this maldistribution of resources which I also plan to address in my life's work.

Not having kids/not getting married is the SELFISH thing to do

Fuck that.  The world doesn't need EVERYONE to have kids.  I've met many people who definitely SHOULD NOT be parents.  Yet many of them are anyway.

lwo, have you considered how many single adults give of themselves through community and charitable volunteer work and in clubs and groups? It would be selfish to get married to someone you didn't love just to be married. A single person can share and give of themselves and their love with lots of people and contribute in many ways.

Single people are also teachers, coaches, aunts and uncles and help a lot with the rearing of the worlds children. They can be very giving of themselves and their time to help out parents.

The world benefits a lot form single childless people being in it IMHO.

Just wanted to give some other considerations.

Em, I think some go into it selfishly. I think bringing new life into the world should be a well thought out choice and either way, once it happens, you HAVE to GIVE, those little ones demand and require so much. It's a very giving commitment to make.

Some parents don;t give a shit, some give the bare minimum to get by, some give a good amount and some go that extra mile to make a difference in a child's life that will bring new life into this world that makes a difference many benefit from.

Some bodies child discovered penicillin. Somebodies child brought peace to a region.  Somebodies child helped others out of abusive situations or poverty. Some bodies child, did something nice for you in your life time and you'll never forget them. When we bring new life into this world, who knows what they will bring to the world. Some bring good things, some not and a lot of that depends on how much the parents put into the thought to have one and raising them.

If you decide to do it, do your best to realize what a commitment to giving it is and the contribution to this world you are making.

Some people contributed the nightmare of Jeffrey Dahmer and Bin Laden to name a few.

Before you go into it, think about how you are going to raise a child that gives and contributes to the positive of the planet and making it a better place for everyone to be in. Usually those people had some adult in their life who showed them how to do that in their own way through their actions.

It's a Huge decision. It's nice to see the thought you are putting into it Em.

:peace:

"Dennis Meadows, the co-author of ?The Limits to Growth?, which the Club of Rome issued in 1972 to spark the sustainability debate, says the Club of Rome was right in saying what it did. And since we have done nothing to address the concerns raised in the 1972 report, we have less time than before to take corrective action. The global population has grown from around 3.5 billion in 1972, to more than 6 billion today. Industrial production has gone from an index of about 180 in 1963 to more than 400. The index of world metals use has gone up more than 50%. The concentration of carbon dioxide has gone up increasing in 30 years by as much as in the previous 220. Mankind?s "global ecological footprint" has gone from a sustainability level of about 90% of the earth?s capacity, to 120%. We are beyond the sustainability point. We have not realized that we have crossed the sustainability limit because we are drawing down on nature?s bank balance and that cannot go on indefinitely. We have already used up half that grace period. The challenge now is the population must stop growing, and we must change our consumption, because we cannot continue to make today?s claims on the environment. India wants to get our income levels up from $600 per capita to at least $2,000, at which level there is no absolute poverty left. If you factor in what that will mean for energy and other non-renewable resources, it seems pretty obvious that what we have already seen in the markets for oil and iron ore are a foretaste of what is to come. Oil may already have reached the level of peak production, and what that means for the global economy is frightening. Does that mean that India and China should not aspire to what the developed economies have delivered by way of standards of living? It seems an unfair question when the west is unwilling to change its consumption habits. If neither happens, and even if some technological fixes can buy us some time, the message is straightforward. Things cannot go on as before."

Got this from snooping around http://www.overpopulation.org/ I hope you're right, but my research seems to suggest otherwise. I'm also interested in the field and the facts concerning have effected my choices with children.

I still disagree. Besides putting yourself first, for a healthy example for a child you would have to make your relationship to your partner number one.

for the first x amount of years trhe baby can't do anything for themselves. they need nourishment and nuture on all levels, lest as they progress through their formative years they devolope wrong. Atleast the first 10 years they need to be fed and taken care of physically, mentally they have not learned the techniques adults have at self preservation and mental contentment, if you put the relationship with partner in second priority they will be better able to understand and take care of themsleves, not so with a small child. They need constant confirmation so as to promote strong esteem and confidencem without those a whole world of troubles ensue. IMHO

This is the very same conclusion I came to in my life. I am 52 and I have never regretted that decision.

This year I moved the love of my life into my house with her two boys age 5 and 12; so it seems that I get to experience children anyway, and I'm glad it worked out like this.

Couldn't disagree more. Although I hear your point. Many of the emotional problems children have that become their adult sufferings stem IMO from a poor relationship between the parents. The love and honesty and caring between them needs to be at an all time high and a number one priority, so the emotional and physical needs of the child can be met. If you have a deeply connected and loving relationship with your partner taking care of all of the infants needs will be a team effort and will be accomplished. To prioritize your primary relationship does not come at any cost to the infants physical needs. You might be misunderstanding me. I'm saying a tight relationship between the parents insures that a child gets to see lots of solid love in his or her world and honesty and integrity. The parents work as a team to care for and love the child.

I don't think this is about "right or wrong". It's about choices and making them based on your personal values.

Yes, I certain;y agree with your position. there must be a working and caring relationship between the adults for optimum conditions. I have seen many a pretty girl with awhole world of intelligence get alittle crazy cause of parental schisms. I myself ceom from a broken household and lord knows my head is alittle fucked. Yes I see your point and agree to the extent that the relationship between parents if good provides a solid bedrock for personal growth relative to kids.

I don't think I'll ever have children of my own as there is so much pain and hurt in the world. If there was peace and we lived in a world where evryone got along then maybe i would think about it but I wish I was never born. What gives me the right to make another life go through this, they may even have a worse life than me. I'm not going to take that risk. I would consider adopting though, the life is already there, it would be nice to be able to love and help another life when they really need it.

I understand how you feel.  For much of my life I have wished that I had never been born. Even though I do not wish this any more I still understand it. I still do not want to bring life into this world of woe and that is my personal commitment. You sound like a fine person who is working on reclaiming your life. I hope you do adopt if that is something that would bring some fulfillment to you.

I never really thought too much about this topic. Now that it's brought to my attention, I'm torn as well. I feel like this world is really messed up and sometimes wish I wasn't a part of it because I feel like I'm grouped into this cancer, but on the other hand there's times where i'm so happy to be able to think about life and many other things so deeply and see the beauty in most things. I always knew I wanted to have my own kids, but now i've got some definite thinking to do. I've got plenty of time though. Weird how your mind can be changed so quickly over a relatively simple question.
