Re: Is it selfish to bring new life into the world? [Re: MOTH]
    #5162739 -

I think it is selfish if you bring children into the world and you can't give them adequate attention or if you can't support them financially.
Other than that No it is not selfish to have kids. It's quite natural to want to have your own kids.

There would be no way to answer this question as it is an unknown. And, being selfish is how we're built. If you have children you do it for selfish reasons. If you don't have children, you do it for selfish reasons.

Or both for the love of oneself and others?

Just my opinion [Re: MOTH]
    #5164833 -

...there has never been an intelligent person of the age of sixty who would consent to live his life over again. - Mark Twain

I asked my cousin if given the opportunity, would he live his whole life over again, granted everything must go exactly the same way. He said no, that would be pointless. I said it's pointless now, to which he replied, "Yeah, but I didn't have a choice this time."

My biggest problem with living (my life) is that I didn't have any say so in the matter. I don't dislike life, I just have moments where I feel as though could have done without it. There are plenty of times I feel trapped. I wouldn't want to do that to another person. It seems unfair.

It makes my skin crawl to hear people say "I want a baby."  My skin crawls when I hear myself say it. As a female and a human I do sometimes wonder what it would be like to have a little person that's a part of me. But I have to remind myself that babies are people. They aren't puppies or miscellaneous items you can pick from the shelf at Walmart.

What if they are born with some type of defect or abnormality that makes their life miserable. That's my fault. Or what if something happens to me and the child has now been left motherless. That's my fault. Or maybe they live a great life but manage to make other peoples lives hell. That's my fault (by default).

I have nothing against people who make a conscious decision to have children.  Just as long as they have evaluted their own lives prior to and are willing to devoit the time, energy, dedication, and love required to introduce a somewhat healthy, productive adult into society. If somthing happens outside of your control and it causes this baby/person some type of extreme grief, just remember you made the decision to bring him here. Had you not made that decisioin, he wouldn't be in pain.

In short I don't know what could happen;too many variables. And it's a too big a gamble to risk it just because I want a baby.

Oh yeah, hi everyone.

I think it is selfish unless you are doing really well and you do not enforce a religion onto your child. Please people if your kids are gonna be pissed at you for 18 years then why don't you use a condom you assholes. sorry but anyway don't have kids just masturbate or take the pill or use a condom.!

I like this description. It reminds me of Clive Barker's "Quiddity" concept. Have you read "The Great and Secret Show"?

Funny, this is a thought I've been pondering lately. I've come to the conclusion it is selfish to have children, that the decision to do so always comes from some desire the parents have. They want to bring a new life into the world, they want to have something to love, they want their genes to be passed on after they die.

If the parents say they're doing it for their child and not for themselves at all, then they are mistaken because because they have no idea what the unborn kid wants, and in fact the child may wish it was never born regardless of its upbringing. They are only looking at the situation from one perspective "Why wouldn't a child want to have such loving parents and live such a privileged life"?

I want to be parent simply because I think I'd be good at it. There are lots of people who I really wish wouldn't be parents. But since I think I'd be a good father, I don't want to waste that potential by being childless when all these people who aren't good at it are having children anyway.

If no then it is in my mind the most purely sefless act their is, after giving yourself over to a chosen lover, you have to give over total self to the child. Please raise them right? Itas not that hard.

Giving over your "total" self to anything is a cowardly act and anyone who makes it will live to regret it.

Yeah, what I meant was you have to make that child priority numera uno, not a total death of self as a person. You are still you, you still like what you like and hate what you hate. Maybe total self was too strn a word. I digress.

I can't see why it would be selfish to bring new life into the world... If anything, you should be proud to continue your legacy into someone else.

I still disagree. Besides putting yourself first, for a healthy example for a child you would have to make your relationship to your partner number one.

Selfish to create life, what the fuck!
That alone is sacrifice, the opposite of selfish.
Even the worst parent pays with something for a kid. It's a trade off.
What if your kid is the one who will help change the future.. what if what if what if etc... It's a big choice .
Not having kids/not getting married is the SELFISH thing to do
( or is it!)

I've often asked the same question and what I've come to is this:

You must be prepared for the day when your son daughter walks up to and asks: "Mom/Dad. Did you consider whether or not I wanted to come into existence (be born) before you made that decision for me? I mean, you thought about the likely course my life would take considering all that you know about this planet and the situation I would be born into right?"

I don't have the heart right now to bring a child into this world considering the impending environmental holocaust. Maybe if things change, but right now, knowing what I know, I would consider it an incredibly selfish/un-compassionate act to create a new life here.

As Bill Hicks said, "Let's figure out this whole clean water, clean air, food for everyone thing first."

Fuck that. The world doesn't need EVERYONE to have kids. I've met many people who definitely SHOULD NOT be parents. Yet many of them are anyway.

Why not adopt a child that already exists but has no one to care for it? I mean, we are in the age of strictly cultural evolution anyway. The medium (race of person) doesn't matter, only the info/message (teachings/ideas) that person knows.

You can love Cambodian babies. Look at Angelina and Brad.

That is something I have considered several times. I suppose the part of me that says to have my own kids is the selfish part, but I think ultimately my desire to be a parent is motivated by a desire to help make the world a better place. I want to raise a child to be a contributor to the betterment of society.

Well,

You could just be a teacher and nurture children that way. Allow the parental units to take care of the biological maintenance. No need except ancient human selfishness to actually reproduce and create one of "your own" especially when there are so many already here who need help and are in dreadful situations. Also, your child may not want to help this society you speak of. You hope that will be the case, but he could just as likely end up some pimp. Not insulting your parenting/nurturing skills, just saying, what the child is and what you want him to be are not the same by a long shot.

Besides, we'll all be uploading into a digitized format soon enough anyway, leaving the body behind like a banana peel. Forget it. Start nurturing your ideas, your mind. And others'.

Good Luck!

That is also something which I am strongly considering. However, neither that nor adoption exclude the option of also having kids of my own.

Except that you would directly be contributing to global overpopulation, which is already a very big problem. Instead of aiding the situation by helping a body already here and with a mind just as open to your love.
