nope, and i'd like to hear why also... i think the reason i havn't done any work w/ agar is because i see no need too

it just seems to me like more work for the same end product, i'd like to hear some stuff about it though

I don't know why either, since I found the cardboard cloning tek it seems pretty useless..., unless you had some karo or a syringe you wanted to test for contams.

The #1 reason is, if you are working with wild strains you must isolate the mycelium from the contamination. Many times prints are contaminated and must be "Cleaned", agar is one of the few ways to clean them.

Others are strain isolation and cloning

cyber, i'm not in a region where actives grow wild...so what is agar useful for the home cultivator? if you find a really big/thick/quick to mature mushie do you clone its tissue and innoc spawn with the myc it produces to produce a whole casing of superior clones? is this how it works?

Short of isolation from contamination and strain isolation there is not much more that it is needed for.

You can clone with it. The idea being, you take a good example of a mushroom from a large cluster. You remove a small inside section of the stem or cap and grow it on agar. you then take an agar wedge and use it on grain (like a G2G transfer)

The casing made with it should be a good prolific fruitier with an above average pinset.

Now to all the people making fun of the question.

Sorry, just had to use my new image

WOW...you're "done" with me. Ouch, the hostility really hurts. When did you ever start with me?

Anyways, I didn't mean to sound like a dick in my previous reply, but I thought it was kind of a bad question. Why not work with agar?

*suck*

I dont think its of MUCH use actually. As said before, good to "clean" wild prints.
Cloning and isolating, people use it for that too.

But I am happy with my mushies without all that manipulation.

Example:

You can drop some spores on agar, they will germinate. Then people fancy to transfer aggressive pieces (the "rhizo") of mycelium to another agar plate. Untill you have a complete rhizo plate.

Then spawn that to a substrate like rye. Then fruit that.

Then from the mushroom you like (big one, beautifull one, fast grower, etc whatever you appreciate) you could take a piece of the inside of the stem and drop that on agar.

Same procedure again. And again, and again.

I dont mind if my mushies arent all the same (in size or whatever).

Today is it a bit more clear?

MF

yeah, i'm more clear on it now, i don't think i'll be needing to work with agar.

shroomskater...your statement was very rude.  how is asking what something is used for a bad question?  are you going to ask what a drug does to you or are you just gonna swallow it...:blowjob:

Yea he wasnt showing any good vibes.

I did ONE multispore on agar, and ONE clone. They are still in the fridge.

You can transfer agar also to liquid medium, to make mycelium syringes. And that aint a bad idea. The only thing I used it for.

But then again, all that effort for a few days gain on colonisation time. I aint in such a hurry.
One grow takes more then a month in the fruiting chamber if you have several flushes. Time enough for my grainjars in the incubator to colonize on multi sporeinjections....

And the strongest spores beat the weaker! Natural isolation!

Good luck Today, and Tomorrow 2..

Sorry, I didn't know you were clueless about agar. In that case, your question was a bad one for the forums because your questions could have been answered by doing a SEARCH. I think most people on here would agree.

And when I asked if it was a joke, ^that's my reason why. Again, I'm not trying to be mean, unlike you.

It is easy to not be clueless about agar and yet still be curious as to how it could benifit the home cultivator when it is possible to get incredible results without agar work. People might think I isolate my strains or something, but I dont, and still get incredible results.

I think his post was posed more as a challenge to agar users to prove what good it does (besides isolating contaminates).

Dont get me wrong, I'm not asking...I'm just trying clarify what was asked.

Actually it wasn't that bad a question...compared to most asked here.

So everyone take a fresh breath of air...and calm down a notch.

-------

I use agar for several reasons.

I use it for starting new wild strains of mushrooms(mostly Cubensis)...where the sterility of the print is questionable.

I use agar to clone mushrooms that I think are exceptional...trying to grow others that match the one I clone.

I use agar to Isolate very aggressive growth of mycelium...which will usually give me faster colonization times when I'm inoculating my jars.

I have used agar to make mycelium syringes...I like using mycelium syringes over spore syringes.

And I like to use agar to make cultures that I can keep(in vials) in my frig.
I have some cultures that have lasted for over 2 years in the frig.

Working with agar can be alot of fun.
I really enjoy it.

TC

Agar is slow as shit in my book. If you're going to clone, use a Karo culture. Much faster and just as reliable. I've got a Karo cloning tek posted up in the Advanced Mushroom Cultivation section under Cloning. Much faster! And you can knock up several dozens of jars with it. Shit, 100's!

this is why i knew it wasn't a joke... if i wanted to i would know how to work w/ agar and karo mediums, but i havn't because i havn't seen a need to, which i was i backed the original question

and i now understand why some people use it and some do not, which negates the opinion that this question/post was a joke... because seldom is it that i learn from jokes
