Re: What's more 'unnatural'? [Re: Prosgeopax]

the human made damn is unnatural the beaver made damn is natural, simply because the dictionary definition of nature is that which is untouched or unalterd by man. SO although i see your point , that everything occuring in the world is natural, including mans action, that is not strictly true from a definition point of view.

the answer depends on what "unnatural" means. when you unpack it, most people use unnatural to mean, "made by humans", in which case a dam on a river made by people is unnatural, one made by beavers is natural. of course, the question is interesting because people who use "unnatural" in this way generally imply that "unnatural" is bad in some way, thus implying that things that people make are somehow inherently bad, while things that occur without human intervention are superior. this is obviously a very arbitary way of subdividing the cosmos - there is no real justification for it. the car is as natural as the termite mound...

a couple of people have suggested that whether or not something is "natural" should be decided in relation to how damaging it is to the environment. this is a very human-centric way of seeing things though....how do you define "damage to the enviromnent"? Was the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs "damaging"? was it "unnatural"?

>The human made dam is clearly less natural because it was built with machines. Machines are not natural.
-Please remember that the teeth of the beaver is a machine. It may not be made of metal, or be made by a human, or have the power of several horses, but they are machines just the same. (inclined planes)

Now, if beavers needed to make a damn as large as we make them, you'd find these industrious animals are actually quite destructive. They would have to kill many thousands of trees to accomplish this, and erosion would be a significant problem in the absence of these. I don't think anyone could compare the the damn making abilities of beavers and humans without taking into account the very different sizes.

As one who once lived in the wilder parts of Canada for many years before moving to sunnier climes, I can attest that beavers have a huge impact on the environment. There is probably no other non-human animal I can name who can produce such an enormous and enduring alteration of the environment in a single year. I've seen in northern Manitoba literally square miles of trees turned into dead sticks. And in the semi-arctic eco-system there we're talking literally centuries for that arboreal growth to recover -- if the dam is destroyed and the swamp is drained.

OK, I read thru this whole thing, and didn't see anybody bring it up, so I will, just to see how it plays a roll in deciding....

The Beaver:
An animal.... Makes no decisions, or informed choices.... It lives it's live purely out of INSTINCT.... It doesn't know any different....

Man:
Makes decisions, and (for the most part) informed choices.... Lives it's live somewhat out of instinct, but more out of education.... Understands the cause and effect of building a dam, and has the CHOICE to seek other power sources....

So, does instinct play a roll in deciding what is "natural"...?

Or does choice (sometimes being somewhat arrogant and money driven) become "natural" because it is our will...?

Show me the evidence that humans make choices and beavers don't.

What is a choice?

I never said that Beavers don't make choices....  But, do they make educated decisions...?

For we must teach the beavers, and they will know the ways to build more efficient dams....
