Do a search on "Ananda" in the Sierra Nevadas of California. I stayed there in the mid-70s and it was a high-point in my life. They are still going strong - the only remaining spiritual commune from that era. I slept outside in a tent (except when it rained - the permanent residents have regular housing) and worked in the garden. We practiced yoga and meditation every day. They don't allow TV, radio, drugs, alcohol or pre-marital sex (though there is no one to police you - it is an agreement). It is in an awesomely beautiful setting near the Yuba River.

You can party in the country, now,...some of my best parties were alone in the wilderness. I agree, that entheogens can merely let you glimpse that which you strive for. Acheiving it requires work.

I think the idea of permanent spiritual communities is inherently flawed. Because people are flawed. Even if the place were pure it would eventually be contaminated by the world due to contact with the world. And there is always contact with the world in some form. And one brings in ones own impurities as well.

I'm not saying it can never work, just that it very rarely does. The strongest and most charismatic people will take over and dissent will be squelched. Primate politics will rear its ugly head. The very things people long to get away from will be carried into the culture by they themselves.

If it worked it would be due to the presence of many very spiritually advanced people. And if they were already advanced why would they need such a place to begin with?

Face it, folks. There is no geographic cure. Work on improving yourself and help people right where you are now. Isolation and dreams of utopia are based on escapism and fantasy.

the farm in TN is one of the older hippie communes in the usa...
(stephen & ina may gaskin led a bus caravan from the haight-ashbury in SF to some land in tennessee back as the '70s dawned...
check 'em out, they're still a going concern...

Actually, I like the rules that Swami stated. It puts more focus on spirituality than material pleasure.

Getting messed up, hammered, and laid is something alot of material-inclinded city folk might do at 2:00 in the morning.

"Getting messed up, hammered, and laid", as you so eloquently put it, is awesome...but it is not spiritual. I can do that at home. I do agree with Jellric that it is a flawed and naive notion. The Dalai Lama once wrote that it is easy to be spiritually pure in isolation. Under such conditions it is merely an illusion, though, the true test is to be spiritually pure in society at large.

It might be fare to pointout that 99% of these types of communities fail adn a huge percent of them are harasted by the goverment

Several of these communities have been completly murdered.

It would be better for you to try and get along with soceity as a whole and earn the money to buy yourself a piece of land on your own.

The problem of searching for "someonelse" to help you move,set-up a camp or share land will utimatly fail for you.

In order to have the kind of trust it takes to hook up with people and build a communiuty comes from learning ....

Resposiblity
Paticence
Money
Strong work habits
Very powerful charisma
And a huge supply of positive Karma

Not to mention skills nessecsry to have a truly self substaining community.

It is a very hard to do what you are saying but,

I think if you are serious then keep it up and keep asking.
That is how very diffucult things happen
Some of the greatest people were told " iT WILL NEVER HAPPEN"

The community that I high-lighted receives no harrassment (to my knowledge); has their own state-sanctioned schools, is self-supporting (publishing equipment, orchard, dairy, garden, apiary, store; etc.) and not about to murder anyone.

Here is the reason: the dogma is minimal; it is generally about self-exploration.

There are actually many similar communes spread out throughout the US.There are enough of them.I would love to be part of a larger commune with land,however Im highly Xenophobic.If anyone I dont know enters onto my land or into my house and I'd be highly likely to stalk them from behind and take them down,then ask questions.lol.Ive every right to be Xenophobic. :smoking:

I feel its always best to just buy your own land.There are many problems in living in a commune with friends let alone strangers.And if they dont like you they can kick you out at anytime.Or if they feel you've done wrong or arent working enough they will sometimes kick people out for that.Also things are voted upon and there is much less freedom.

Having your own land is much better.Much more freedom.Also most communes if not all of them in the US tend to frown upon drug use and some frown upon alcohol as well.Each commune has unique rules.

I agree. Work to make where you live now a better place than you found it. That is infinitely more spiritual than holing up with people more concerned with ego centered self importance than improving the world.

Its not about isolation. I love travelling.

I have a dream, call it fantasy if you will, to have my own sea plane. Not just any seaplane but a modified sea plane! That is if i could get my hands on some kind of alternative fuel or engine, all needs to refuel are gone and i can fly wherever i want, whenever.

Ideally i would 'borrow' a Grumman G-73T Turbo Mallard from some ultra rich Florida airline.



Instal new propulsion.



Rip out all those posh seats and put a bed at the back, a couch for my stoner friends, some mats for my dogs.

And off i went, flying like a bird! jamaica today, north Australia, tomorow. Liefs a beach, lots of weed, home on wings, no financial problems, no need to work my ass of on a banana farm anymore.
