Sorry to be so lame, but what is a “water tub”? And how does it differ from a shotgun fruiting chamber?

Re: Water Tub Tek for fruiting BRF cakes [Re: The Ferryman]

I have been reading through this entire thread and it has been extremely helpful! My very first grow is underway and I currently have 12 half pint BRF jars colonizing that I inoculated using a LC syringe about 5 days ago. Still have quite a ways to go before they’re fully colonized obviously, but all are growing healthy mycelium - so far so good. I will plan to use the water tub tek to fruit these.

As there’s a ton of information on this thread (some of it conflicting) I’m hoping for some feedback on my general plan from more experienced members. At least this gives me something good to focus on during the colonization waiting period

Here is my plan:

Wait at least a week after full colonization for consolidation. Then birth cakes and soak in room temp water for 24 hours before rolling in dry verm. I have plenty of verm and no coir, so I plan to use verm. Seen some conflicting opinions on this, but there seems to be no reason not to use verm although a few folks seem to strongly prefer coir.

For the tub, I'll fill a 32 QT tub with with an inch or so of water. Place 4 upside down cups in the corners of the tub and sit cookie cooling rack on top. Place cakes on cooling rack (each cake sitting on a mason jar lid). While it sounds like the latest advice is not to completely restrict FAE, I’ll plan to set my lid on top of the tub without locking the lid for ~48 h to cut down on FAE and increase humidity. My tub will be in a room that has forced hot air, although vents will not be right over the area of the tub. The room temp will be set in the 70-72F range and I’ll maintain a 12hr light/dark cycle with a 6500K light from the very start.

I’ll plan to leave the tub alone without disturbing it (no misting or further opening besides maybe a quick daily check) for ~48-72hrs. Wait for myc regeneration (longer than 48-72hrs if necessary), then begin misting and introducing greater FAE by cracking the lid more. Given conditions this time of year inside are rather dry, continue monitoring surface conditions closely and mist once or twice a day as needed to induce pinning. Once a cake has substantial pinning, try to avoid misting directly on the fruiting bodies.

Once a cake is harvested, soak for 12 hours and put back into water tub for second flush (without rolling in verm this time).

Obviously there is no one size fits all, and a lot of this comes down to playing things by ear and monitoring conditions as the grow progresses. But is there anything way off base with my plan as far as you guys can see? And feedback or constructive criticism would be much appreciated.

Also, I don’t think all 12 cakes will fit in the 32 quart tub (maybe 6 or 8 cakes max). So if I am lucky enough to have all 12 jars fully colonize without contam/stalling out I will probably mess around with conditions in smaller containers with the remaining cakes.

After Birth and Dunk, I rolled my cakes in dry verm (I dont have coir atm).

I want to know if I should have added water to the verm before rolling my cakes with it? If yes, my current rolled cakes have been in the water tub for a day, is there a way to save it?

Nope, dry verm roll, mist the verm on the cakes and LITFA

Is this moist enough for fruiting? I’m not getting any pins for 3 days now and it worries me.
