Casing BRF cakes (pics)

Ok, a friend decided to try casing brf cakes, so this is what he did: 1. After cakes were 100% colonized, he dunked them overnight. 2. Then he grabbed a nice sized container and added 1/2 inch perlite to the bottom. 3. Next, he added 1/2 inch layer of damp vermiculte that he had sterilized in the microwave for 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the vermiculite felt dry, so he added sterilized water to the vermiculite to achieve proper moisture levels. 4. Then, he crumbled 3 brf cakes to about the size of marbles and spread them accross the vermiculite. 5. After that, he added another 1/2 inch layer of damp, sterlized vermiculite to cover the crumbled brf cakes. 6. Finally, he put the lid on the container and put it in a warm, dark place. After the mycellium begins to penetrate the casing layer, he will cold shock, add light, start fanning, and misting. Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated primal

you nuked the verm for 30 minutes! damn thats gotta be hot, but answer me this. did you take such careful preparations with that water that was added afterwards? if not then you wasted alot of energy nuking that verm. since the h20 will carry contams too. just a comment.

The water added later was nuked for ten minutes and then left in the microwave to cool before adding to the vermiculite, which had been covered in the bowl with a clean plate that had been wiped down with alcohol.

Anybody know a better strategy for ending up with field capacity vermiculite for casing? My friend considered the pressure cooker, but didn't have any containers that would handle that much vermiculite that would work with the pressure cooker, and he didn't want to just pour it in as that would be pretty messy. But then again, as Moe observed, things got a little messy anyways.

primal,
are you asking for a way to sterilize large amounts of verm for casing? in my understanding of the process in verm production, most verm is basically sterilized in that very process so as long as you dont open the bag the verm should be pretty much sterilized. of course it is hard to say how careful they are in the packaging of the verm. if that isnt your question ignore this.

Beatle,
Problem is that my friend had already opened the bag for a previous project and didn't trust that contams didn't enter in the meantime.

Very nice, Primal. I predict good things from that casing.

That looks good for a start. Next time though you might want to skip the perlite layer. Unless you sterlized that perlite, it's a contaminant waiting to happen. It can be bad to have still water spots. I made a casing exactly like yours once, and I got one good flush, and then a week later BOoOm, I had green mold everywhere. THe thing was though that I looked closer at the layering of the casing contamination, and it started from the perlite, and finished in the top. In so many words, just check for this. joshLSD

My friend was a little concerned about the perlite too. After reading Tripmeister's post about the kit he got from the Netherlands that had perlite in the bottom, he thought he'd give it a try, although that kit probably used rye with a layer of vermiculite on top. Supposedly, one of the biggest problems with casings is being too wet, so he thought the extra drainage might help. Supposedly, perlite is pretty sterile right out of the bag due to the high temperatures in making perlite, but you're right, it makes a great harbor for contamination if it gets in there, so we'll see! Maybe he'll try misting with the bleach tek. Hopefully some of the bleach water will reach the perlite layer and take care of things. primal

verm has no nutrients in, so wouldnt harbour many contams......just nuke it/cook it/whatever and it will be fine....u wont get any mould growing off verm unless u get some uncolonized brf on it

Wow a whole thread full of people talking about sterilizing verm and perlite in the microwave... I'm so thankful that I never had to worry about this shit.
