Morchella Virginiana wild clone I took this year on grain I just spawned to peat

Notice how it fully colonized like regular gourmet mushroom mycelium but then made sclerotia !!  This is extremely promising because it could make their cultivation more synonymous and reduce the risk of contamination!!

I made some morchella rufobrunea moss pots and have had them in a hacked refrigerator for 3 weeks now that has a high of 54f and low or 42f
They seem to be making more spheres but it’s probably just more sclerotia

Cross posted from AM because that board is dead

So I have been going off the deep end with morels lately, damn near spend every waking moment trying to figure out how exactly it is that they work. I still believe previous cultivation attempts are overlooking a major part of the puzzle and that is why they face difficulties in repeatability and commercialization. Now as for what that is? I still don’t have a fucking clue, all I can do is try new things and record observations.

Lately I have been working under the assumption that cloned fruiting body cultures are reproductively “spent” for the most part. This is based mostly off my observations in the extreme differences in the vigor and morphology of a cloned culture and Multispore culture (sexual ascopores, from the cap).

Clone:
The clone cultures all have taken on a slower, thick, crust-like growth, with a characteristic golden color to them. On my 50mm ketchup cups they take about 10-14 days to fully colonize. They do not do well with subculturing, you get about 3-4 transfers before they basically give up and die out. Another interesting observation with these cultures is that they all seem to physically darken the agar until it almost turns black.

Multispore:
These cultures have all looked more like traditional mushroom mycelium, with a distinct morel flair to them. Growth is far more linear and explorative than the clone cultures, believe it or not, the growth in that picture was OVERNIGHT! They colonize to the edge of my 60mm petri dishes in about 4 days.

State of each:
So this is where the mycology starts to go over my pay grade because at the end of the day I just started fucking around with mushrooms a few years ago and am by no means an ologist of any sorts. Please correct me if this is contradictory or wrong:

Cloned cultures
Each clone from a single fruiting body is one successful N+N heterokaryon

MS
Contains a wide variety of genetic states, including many N+N Heterokaryons and some N homokaryons

My theory:

So this goes back to when I dumped a bunch of bacterial americana spawn bags in my orchard. One of them had a large spot on top of the bag that I figured was some sort of contamination because it was so different from the clone cultures I was working with at the time. I had sent the rest of my T3 clone plates from the 2024 season to bags of millet. They struggled to colonize, as expected with the age and subculturing. This “contamination” was a stark white and very linear, just like these Multispore cultures. Do you guys think that a heterokaryotic split and recombination mechanism can exist within the morel lifecycle? A sort of genetic reset in order to recycle successfully fruited genetics to keep them in the pool? I know this phenomenon has been observed in clone cultures of other ascomycetes but I was not able to dig up any supporting evidence for morels.

I could also just be fucking delusional and not worth listening to. you decide.

Upped the spore concentration on my last round of germination plates and got pigmented mycelium right off the bat.

I’m going to be switching to gourmet soon due to my first child being born and not wanting to grow actives in the house with a baby around.

I’m very curious if anyone has had success getting morels to fruit inside?

There's a handful of successful attempts in real laboratories but no hobbyists have gotten that far with it

Doesn't mean it's not worth experimenting with. I have learned so much in just a short while I've been interested in them.

I got a sample of some dried morels, could i rehydrate that and clone it onto agar using some of the tissue?

Do you have a cap? I'd recommend breaking down a small piece of cap material in a small volume of sterile water and plating it out.

It all depends on how they were dried. If over a higher heat then it might not be viable. Morel mycelium is pretty damn crazy though I wouldn't be surprised if it sprang back to life pretty easily. If it doesn't work, shoot me a PM I can help.

Yea I’ve got like 5-6 cap and stems. Not sure how they were dried as I got them as a free sample. Guess it couldn’t hurt to try. Thank you.

Although would doing a slurry be a better option? I live in Southern California where the weather is usually warm and dry for most of the year so i don't know if it'll grow.

Look for morchella rufrobrunnea. It's a late summer early fall fruiting morel that's found on the west coast

ChatGPT tells me this is black morel. Not sure if I can even take a clone transfer from these or if it’s even worth it. Could I make a slurry out of this and throw them around my backyard on some wood chips under trees? I’m in Southern California where it’s warm and dry practically year round. I read that slurries don’t even guarantee anything and can even take 2-3 years. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
