How would one set up to grow morel mushrooms at home what things are needed to do this and what has shown to work best. How do the pros do it? what are some ways that people have had much success with in groing morels at home. is there a pf-tek type tek (easy simple clear anyone can have luck with a good try) for morels? -Thanks-

It's difficult to grow morels inside, even Stamets never made it...

Morels are difficult to fruit because they are very sensitive to temperature fluctuation. They require specific temperatures for specific amounts of time during specific developmental phases and times, and when their demands are not met, they abort. For example, Black morels may require cold nights in order to form pinheads from primordia, but may require warmer day temperatures. M. esculenta is less fussy about the temperature requirements than are black morels. That is, if you go slightly out of the optimal range when primordia formation occurs, they may still form pinheads and develop mushrooms. I know all of this information by monitoring fruit body development that occurred in my basement(not intentionally, those bastards!). Let me also mention that humidity affects formation. However, it depends on the strain and the individual primordia. In other words, if primordia was formed under less relative humidity, then it won't require the same amount of humidity to fully develop as some primordia formed under high humidity. I've seen morels form when the ground was almost completely dry and there was rather low humidity. Part of the secrete of growing morels is producing large sclerotia. This is achieved by colonized a large portion of nutrient rich substrate, and then allowing mycelium run into nutrient poor substrate. Others suggest to do it backwards, but I have found no difference. Good luck.

There are several patents for growing morels but I don't think any of them work that great. Commercial exploitation of this specie still depends on pickers in the wild.

Ya, thats the easy part! I'm heading for a big forest fire site at Friday Crk in south-central BC in a few days for a big morel pick, anyone in the Vancouver area interested?
