Morel Adventure.

Morel Adventure


Pulled the trigger on a 10 CC LC of black morels like 10 minutes ago. This is going to be the attempts at growing it thread. :thumbup: lets see what we can do.

2-13-18

Made some agar earlier today :super: Knocked up 4 plates to test the culture, Then it will be time to go ham :laugh:



Turned those two yellow plates into 7 :thumbup:

Not using this plate, But this is what some of the mycelium is looking like on the yellow ones.



And here is a picture of the black plates. Did some xfers on these. Interesting looking mycelium

A few indoor attempts and some outdoor beds. I figure anything that fails indoors can be burried outside for next year. :thumbup:

Knocked up 4 plates, two of each color to test the culture. Don't wanna waste a bunch on 4 plates right away if its not clean. If it is my god!

I have growth on both my yellow plates, but none so far on the black plates. But that's okay, give her a few more days and we shall know. Going to xfer on the yellow plate soon, but It looks clean so that is good :super:

Holy shit. the growth on the black plate is verrrrry faint. Like you wouldn't know theres mycelium on there unless you look under a light.  very faint. Did an xfer on one of them, Just to see if it thickens up a bit.

Also turned those two plates in 7.

Yes, very fast and faint. It will thicken and darken soon. Morels have really cool looking mycelium.

there's a patent on the web from some americans who were succesful at indoor cultivation of morels.
they couldn't mass produce though, but you could look into it.

interesting. So they used grain mixed with soil it seems. I was thinking of doing grain spawned to some woodchip shavings (elm and apple), then simply casing it with soil from the woods around my area

could be done this way. they only use grain because the mycelium consumes it rapidly, leaving a lownutrient medium after which induces the sclerotia. apparently they find the sclerotia crucial for fruit body induction. if you would use woodchips, I think the medium has nutrients for a longer time, because of the tougher lignin polymers.
I'm not an expert though. I've only been able to grow the sclerotia, couldn't get fruits.

Hopefully. Knocked up 6 BM jars today, and 6 yellows. Going to do various tests with each. And worse case scenario I will do this.

Made spawn from a wild morel spore print.

I am amazed at the speed the mycelium grows! It usually grows right through a petri dish and grain spawn in a matter of about 3 days. The mycelium is at first barely visible, nearly requiring magnification to see but most certainly covering the entire substrate, then over time the mycelium whitens up/ or in this case it goes a few strange hues of orange/green/khaki.

It does the same in an lc. It looked like spider webs on the bottom of the container until I swirled it.

I did 6 transfers from the original plate last night. All are showing 3/8 - 1/2 inch growth on the plate in less than 24 hours.

Made some LC's and then took my yellow syringe I got, and knocked up two of them, and then a half pint jar of black and two smaller ones of black. Expand dat culture out baby!

My 6 plates hit the edges last night. Dropped 2 plates to 4 qt jars and a 6lb oat bag. My lc is growing like a fat kid on a box twinkies. Going to do a few patches in the woods and bunch of garden containers in April.
Anyone know if a slant will survive in a fridge?

May be I need to look. Seriously they survive extremely cold winters so a refrigerator shouldn't be a problem.

Yes. It gets -10 degree's plus here sometimes, and they survive the winter just fine.

morchella sextelata or morchella septimelata  not sure which one
Morchella brunnea
Morchella exuberans
morchella americana or morchella ulmarius not sure which one
morchella importuna from Oregon
anyone else working with these or others? curious to know if any successful in outdoor cultivation

I think my first set of these indoors, Im going to spawn to woodchip shavings, and then case it with pasturized leaves that have been sitting for a year. Kinda like how out in the woods the leaves become new top soil.
