I was told to extract the sclerotia with a knife!  I don't know about the rest of the jar contents.  I was planning on tossing mine into spawn bags and then covering them with pasteurized gravel and leaf litter/sawdust/whatever I can find.

i nearly shit when i read this the article is "morel mushroom evolution a knol by gary novak".

Morel mycelium feeds on bacteria which are highly abundant in early spring soil. Pseudomonas fluorescens appears to be the primary species of bacteria providing nutrients for the morel. It breaks down proteinous debris released by thawing ice in the spring. It readily releases its nutrients to plants through autolysis, which means self-breakdown. However, this does not normally occur until late in the spring, while the morel does much of its growing early in the spring. Therefore, the morel induces autolysis in Pseudomonads by releasing small amounts of acid, which it would normally do in its ancestral form as a yeast.
Oh yeah!

Most of my sclerotia were at the surface or above, sticking to the glass walls, so I took a knife to get them out to inoculate more jars. If you have them all around, you can pour everything into a bag and separate sclerotia from the rest by hand.
In my experiments the used substrate didn't produce more sclerotia by itself. Perhaps you can use to inoculate fresh substrate. I just bury it outside or in plant pots.

Be careful. Gary Novaks theories appeared logical for me when I started reading about morel cultivation, but it didn't lead me anywhere. I think he is just talented in explaining what he believes in. Better stay sceptical or read more from him, for example what he thinks about physics and the universe. Then you'll know what I mean.

Most, if not all of your questions about growing sclerotia are answered here:

"Physiological and Environmental Studies of Sclerotium Formation and Maturation in Isolates of Morchella crassipes"
http://aem.asm.org/cgi/reprint/55/12/3095.pdf

"Maitake and Morels"
http://www.rirdc.gov.au/reports/AFO/04-024.pdf

Please read them too.

Okay, this is a real noob question here.  When collecting wild morels, has anyone tried directly transferring mycelium or growing stem butts out on cardboard?  Cardboard spawn could just be layered over trays of gravel covering a nutrient source.  You could probably get away with using manure or compost.  So... by layer...

"Duff" mixture
Cardboard spawn sheet
Gravel
Compost/Manure

This could also be a good use of my "spent" rye grass.

Yeah but you got to watch out with Gary Novak, he most likely got that information from a college mycological journal and reiterated without references or citations. Plus the fact he's weird, like psychologically unstable; he snubbed me and told me "when you pay homeage to your gods" meaning Volk and Mills "You pay homeage to frauds" or something similar to that. Volk read what Novak sent to me in a message and said "yep he's full of misinformation" and yadidda yadidda. Novak's an asshole and he's cracked. Plus he has an unusual obsession with yeasts. Next time around he'll base everything on Candida.

alright say we get some really nice sized sclerotia in our jars(what size are looking for?)than what? and second if we get soil where we find them in the spring do you replace the wood mulch layer with it?

1-The whole mulch layer or whatever, almost totally or virtually enmeshed in the sclerotia, so REALLY huge.

2-That or supplement the soil with new pasteurized wood mulch.

It doesn't matter how you get it out. It can be cut out in clumps if needed. And the rest of the jar contents? I guess use it as spawn, refrigerate it.

Hopefully the whole thing. The more the better. But yeah the wood area. This way you don't mistakenly move any nutrients along with the wood, i.e. loose grain kernels.

Great thread.  I really need to start some indoor experiments.  It seems funny that no one on any boards has produce a single picture of a successful morel grow (beyond those related to Mills).

In my experience with prepared outdoor beds, I often see disk shaped ascomycetes (also noted in Stamets).  If you look carefully at the picture below you can see what appears to be abundant small disk fungi growing along with the morels.  This combined with the plants is a clue that the conditions of the casing is not sterile and maybe not even pasteurized.

Workman,

Those are primordia and they are spherical. I think at least because that's what Ower and Mills had described.

Spherical formations.

I think the lighting is playing tricks on you, making it look concave instead of convex.

Look just under his arm and you see one from a side profile.

Hmmm, maybe.  The image isn't exactly clear.  I do see the occasional morel primordia in the mix but some of those larger ones are very disk-like and I haven't seen any indication that a morel primordia is that shape.

The earliest ascocarp primordium seen appeared as an aggregate, 1 mm diam, of radially arrayed hyphae (FIG. 1) and arose from a single hypha. As development continued, the tuft of mycelium produced a dense interwoven core, and adventitious hyphae extended from the lower surface of the primordial base. Shortly thereafter (next day in this sequence) an apothecial fundament began protruding from the surface of the spherical primordium (FIG. 2).

- Notes on the Development of the Morel Ascocarp: MORCHELLA ESCULENTA, R, Ower

At the end of this period, i.e., approximately 1-3 days after hydration, morel primordia start to form. Primordia are spherical hyphal aggregates which are about one millimeter in diameter. Within a few days, the primordia form protuberances which represent the first sign of ascocarp fundament formation.

The cup-like structures in the image do not appear to be spherical and are much larger than 1 mm.  From the images I have seen, morel primordia start out as a very tiny fuzzy ball that soon shoots out a tiny morel from the center.
