I want to grow Morels outside
    #17597862 -

I know this is a hard thing to do but I wanna try.  Its a bummer that they dont fruit the first year, the year planted.  Has anyone gotten morels to fruit the year they planted?  I read that the key to fruiting morels is scloretia and this requires a nutrient poor substrate with a nutrient rich substrate within the mycelium web.  If morels can fruit in a tray indoors very soon after the setup is made I wonder why it takes two years for fruits outdoors.  For fruits indoors I read that scloretia must form within the casing layer.  I plan to use a roughly 50/50 mix of applewood sawdust and compost with some birdseed and applewood chips in 200 wide mouth quart jars (PC'd).

Plus has anyone used the karo tech to grow morel cultures?  I would like to start this thread to discuse and document my experience/findings.

Have you read all of the morel cultivation thread?
Lots of good knowledge from people who have been working at the morel project as well.

In china you can learn how to learn how to grow morels. I believe the course cost somewhere around a $1,000US.

good luck with your project!

I plan on between 10k and 11k cubic inches and hope on sclerotia.  That morel thread is huge and a lot is just chatter but some good links.  I was hoping for some talk that isnt so cluttered but I would like to share my findings here.

I will order supplies very soon, I expect to use 35lbs of apple wood sawdust and 5 kilos of apple wood chips with some compost and trace amounts of other goodies.  Sand and some bird seed with oyster shell flour will be in the mix too but exact mixture ratios will be a secret for awhile.

I was worried I wouldnt be able to put spawn outside because I couldnt get the compost I wanted.  The compost I can get and I am almost done getting supplies, 8 more wide mouth quart cases to go!  I will try to get some pics loaded as I move along, showing success and failures.  Going to order the culture at the last minute and grow out about two quarts in karo diluted.  I only need one quart of LC for 17 cases.  Again I hope that if sclerotium form I will get a flush the first year.  65 degrees after 5 weeks in jars will form sclerotia, if nutes are low.

Edit:  The compost is awesome, its not manure it is made from a landscaping company and resturant compost.

Sounds like a sound plan. i look forward to your results.

My plan of attack goes like this. I work on a sweet small organic hobby farm in my off season of regular work. one of my jobs i convinced them into is creating a mycological landscape to go with all the yummy veggies and fruit.

One of my project ideas is a morel patch. So what i did was , one day i had to clean all the ash from the furnace and i thought this is the time to start. So i dug up one of the bonfire pits and mixxed the charcoal chunks with all the ashes from the furnace, then mixxed in some mixxed hardwood/fir chips and spread them under a grove of about 12 apple trees. this was last spring / summer.

Now this spring i plan on innoculating if i am able to generate some spawn in the next 3-6 months since i just got  black and blonde cultures. hopefully they are not to old. ive had a hard time aquiring them so i have some work ahead of me .

i am hoping by making the charcoal/ash/woochip patch LAST year it mimmicks a fire from a previous year. plus apple orchards are a favored spot too so i  am doubling my chances hopefully!  we'll see what happens 2014.

Be sure to test your LC before expanding to 17 cases :awesome: any small contam in the lc would be a huge disaster on that scale.

Another option is grain to grain transfers which are super easy and colonize fast.

I wish you good luck Morel Guy, psylosymon and anyone else cultivating morels!!

    #17629670 -

Thanks psylosymonreturns and deadmandave

How would I test the culture?  Could I test in a petri dish?  I suppose I could test the culture in a jar with my medium mixture.  There is little chance of contamination with these self healing and vented lids I got from outgrow...I will use these on the LC jars and I am building a glove box but broke the bin I got today.  I tried to use a drywall circle cutter and it broke the bin, so I am going to use a hole saw that fits on a drill......3" for the 90mm filter and probably 4 something for my hands.

I have thought about trying a patch with just peroxide to sterilize and spraying culture when the weather is right, just to see if anything happens...dunno.  Morels colonize quickly from what I have read, its the sclerotia that take time.

I really wonder how many jars will grow contaminates, I have had good successe in the past.  The weirdest thing was when some z strain spores germinated on top of the keepers brew...ya, I was a noob and ordered from that guy!

I'm looking to get into this as well, about to acquire a culture for black morels

What he's saying about testing it is try it out in a few jars and see how the myc grows, and make sure no contams start growing in a week or two.

If after a couple weeks no contams are present and myc is growing, then noc up the rest of your 17 cases of jars.

IT would be really shitty to noc up 204 jars and ALLL of them contaminate because you didn't try a few jars first.

I know this from experience, impatience caused me to shoot up 4 cases (not as bad as 17) with LC that looked fine, white fluffy myc, no other colors or spots visibly present.  I had used the LC 6 months prior and figured it should still be good.

I learned very quickly to test your LC on about 3 jars first.
Why 3 and not just one?  maybe the 1 will get really lucky and not contam, then you would proceed to contam everything because that one jar fooled you.

The best chunk of info I found from the morel thread so far
Peter Dilley's grow morels

Just ordered yellow morel culture. I will try white and black  cultures later but the black need oak sawdust and thats hard to source.  Luckily I have Amish wood workers around that make plenty of saw dust.

I will test the culture on a case, its a small number on this scale and enough to see how things work.  I can only let the test case grow a week and thats plenty with morchella culture.  I am excited because I like to do things like this and I want to make some cash.

I must start two quart jars  for LC, with about 5 or 6 cc's of culture, that is twice as much as I need.  If both jars are contaminated then I would bet money the culture I buy is the reason.  I think these jars can be ready to go outside April 1st as that is when morels pop up around here.

I need to return my computer fan for the glove box, got  a 4" and I need a 3"......the better do that for me!

It normally takes at least a year or two til you get fruitings of morels after you inoculate your mushroom patch. If you are looking to make money from growing mushrooms then you should start with another species.

I think morels take a year or two to grow sclerotia, which need to be present  to form fruit bodies.  I have read an indoor tech for morels and if you can form sclerotia you can get fruits in a few weeks.

Time will tell

It isn't just they need sclerotia present to form, the fruiting body grows directly from the sclerotia. Yes they can be grown indoors, M. rufobrunnea is the best species for trying this.

Edit: forgot to ask why you are getting a fan for your glove box? a glove box should be a still air environment

The fan goes on the outside of the box and blows through a filter,  kinda like a flow hood but a box..  Ihave used this method before and it worked well.

I dont need a flush this year but it would be cool if it happened.

The point of a still air box is that all the contaminating spores settle, if you are blowing air in you are stirring them up.  Fans and filters are just unnecessary the box works just as intended with 2 hand holes cut.

Good luck with your morels :toast:

The box will be sprayed with alcohol so all the spores are sterile, the fan keeps a positive pressure in the box so no new spores come in.

The apple sawdust just arrived, looks awesome!
50 pounds of the stuff, 10 bags, 5 pounds each.  Its all nice and clean, its for smoking foods.
The substrate recipe calls for a little less than 7 bags, 25% sawdust and 8.333% apple wood chips.
The rest is sand, awesome compost that is manure free, birdseed and crushed oyster shell.

Addition:  There is a problem with the pressure cooker. To do a case at a time requires a pressure cooker that wont fit on the stove with the microwave there.  I don't think we will take the nuker down so the size that fits will take 7jars at a time.

I am thinking we are going to stagger the spawn throughout the year and hope for a flush next year.  My goal is to do this for about ten years so I have ten or twenty grand in the backyard.  We have 73 blueberry plants at the farm and I would like to put morels in our forest too.  We have some farmland and I want to experiment with peroxide to "sanitize" say a dumptruck of sawdust and see if that will spawn.

Poked 5 holes in 9 cases today and put micro-pore tape and silcone on 2 cases.  Not sure how well micro-pore tape will hold up.  I tested a piece on a caserole dish lid and boiled water in the dish, held up but slide off easily.  I saw a thread on micro-pore tape, a microscope was used and its not the best stuff.  I wish I could afford the lids I got from outgrow for all the jars but its just not in the budget.

Go to hobby lobby and buy "easy felt" it's like 75 cents for a sheet.  two sheets should do all of your cases of jars easily.

Here's a link to transcending life's lids

He uses synthetic filter disks, but the "easy felt" at the craft store is pretty much the same material.

It's way cheaper than polypore tape, and it's WAY more effective.

Another well tested filter is polyfil. Also can be had at a craft store, it's used for pillow stuffing and it is very cheap.

When it is stuffed tightly through a hole in a lid it acts as a great filter.

I am having a hard time visualizing how to do that.  I only did two cases but the holes are in 9.  I would really like the spawn jar lids that are almost $6 a piece but that's pricey!!!!

EDIT:  I am looking into EZ felt, looks easy enough..  I wonder if I should of used bags, they already have a filter but I have never used those before.  If I do go ahead with the easy felt that will take some skill and I will have to buy new lids for two cases....thank god those are cheap!

It just takes time, no skill necessary.  Just trace a quarter or some large coin with a marker or pen over and over on the sheet and go back and cut out all of those circles.
When you are ready to use it, line the very edge of the circle with fresh silicone (wear gloves or it's getting on your hands) and place is over your gas exchange hole.  Press from the middle to the outside and wait for it to dry.  Done.

Poly fill is a bit of a pain and looks trashy.  You have to figure out how much you want to use per jar, then roll it into a ball and kind of smash and turn it in the hole so it fits snug.

Have you started your morel culture in the karo/water mixture yet?  I'm curious to see how well it works, my culture should arrive today.

One word of caution with LC's, specificly LC's from others(even vendors). Over the past year I've dealt with quite a few. Contams are HIGHLY common and mis-labeling is frequent. And everyone of these came from reputable board sponsors.

I will never grow a LC before watching it on agar and then doing a small test run before jumping into larger production. I've had my mistakes, can you say 30 blocks of tiger mushrooms!!

They would have to be running a very disorganized shop to mislabel cultures.  I hope its all good, if not I will hunt for the morel I want and take a tissue culture.  I have seen spores for black and white morels but not yellows.

I did more shopping today, didn't get apple wood chips yet cause where I went they had basically sawdust.  Going to lowes tomarrow, they have 8 bags of chips in stock and I need 5.  Planning on getting more jars and EZ felt as well.........can't wait!!!!

Let me know how yours goes Indocult, what morel did you get and from who?

EDTIT:  My LC will actually be about 4.9% karo.  Does anybody know if I must inject air into the lids I got from outgrow or are they passive gas exchange?

I have ordered many culture syringes from sporeworks(everythingmushrooms) and have never had a problem.  There LCs do not have an nutrients in them like LCs commonly made on here, but are instead blendered plates.  I have never had much luck making the karo lcs myself.

IF you dont have the setup to do blend up plates I have made an lc by taking a colonized grain jar, breaking it up, injected sterilized water and then  sucking it back out after shaking it up.  The lc worked extremely well and then i still spawned the grain without contam problems.

Test a few jars using pelltex to see if it will work for mycology. Cook up a batch of grains, sterilize and inoculate a few of them. Leave a couple without inoculation, see if any contaminate.

I wouldn't risk 17 cases of jars on a brand new filter that has never been tested.

If you cant find ez felt or stiffened felt try polyfil! it is very cheap and like indocult said, all you have to do is wad it up tightly and pull it through a hole in the lid. I use one 1/4 inch hole per lid.

got my cultures on friday! the black was a bust but the blonde is nuts. ive already made a few new petris and plan on getting them on grain and test some on rye grass seed . then figure out the plan of attack i guess.

growing blacks seems so much more logical, planting the spawn in charcoal and wood chips .
But where to plant the blondes? i am thinking i need to be growing sclerotia first ? and planting that around a good stand of cottonwoods? and also planting sawdust spawn and spreading cottonwood chips? then just covering it with leaf litter and shit ?

there is so much morel cultivation talk around but half the time its one species another time its another species and its hard to see whats good for just blondes.

The LC has been pressue cooked and is cooling down in the glove box.  Going to inject 5cc's in each jar tonight.  There was no carmelization so everything went really well.  700ml of distilled water and 7 teaspoons of karo in each jar.

Inoculated the 2 LC's, most of the culture went into the second one.  I thought most went into the first because it just sucked right through but it's clearly mostly in jar #2.  There is some in jar #1 and it looks like enough to colonize.

the pic on outgrow's site looks like a cheaper version of a whatman filter.. wonder why its not allowing gas back into the jar? I've personally not used filters like these, maybe they take longer to equalize after a sterilize cycle?

IMO it sounds abnormal.

how long did you wait for the lc jars to cool after sterilization?

the filter may just be slow to equalize pressure, hence your culture got suck'd

I really need to know how to break up myc, anyways the culture went out when plunged faster than I thought but not sucked out.  So how do I breakup my myc?

I believe I see mycelium growing, tiny threads that look like morchella myc.  Hard to tell since the morel myc is the same color of the soaked sawdust.  It's only noticable between the sawdust pieces, little stands of what I believe to be, mycelium!  I first noticed these threads a day or two ago, they appear to be growing!

Addition:  I think I will use a measuring teaspoon (that is metal) to tranfer spawn to my jars.  A teaspoon should be plenty & there are 48 teaspoons per cup.  I have six cups of sawdust that should have sclerotia when transfered.  It only takes one sclerotium to colonize a jar of substrate, so I should be good.

I am worried a little bit about bacteria that may have been introduced into the jar that malfuntioned.  It does have slower growth so there is a difference between the two jars.  I don't smell bad odors when I put my nose to the filter.  It's still early and it's possible that it could go either way.  I do see strands of Hypae, in both jars.  There is simply more Hypae visable in the jar that didn't malfunction.  Morchella is a fast cultivator and I am interested in how much competition it can outgrow.  Mycelium secretes enzymes that isolate contaminates, nature can overcome so if you have studies on this topic post 'em up!

Morel mycelium is weird stuff, not at all like growing shrooms.  The mycelium isn't colonizing in thick tufts that exand slowly.  It's like long hypae that spreads out before it thickens & becomes dense tufts.  I don't believe it's cobweb mold, to early to be sure.  The sawdust was pc'd for an hour at 15-16psi.  If it was cobweb mold the jar that malfunction should have more & it has less.

The myc is very fina at first. It thickend as time goes on. But its very fast growing. At first it resembles a very fine spider web. As it grows if conditions are right it will form small white tufts which will then turn orange brown. These are the sclerotia.

Looks like morels, not sclerotia.  I am not seeing growth that I want.  i am wondering if a cold/frozen snap would trigger germination.  I am thinking a print and agar is the next option.  Then transfr to grain.  I just realized that spores freeze over the winter, so that may help?

I shook the jars yesterday, i see bright orange stuff in the first jar (the jar that didn't malfunction).  I think it's close to time, to get a spore print and agar plates going!  It is interesting to see what grows, good thing there should be no anthrax spores around.  It's probably a tree fungus, I don't know what all grows on applewood.  I also want to get at least one apple tree.  My budget is limited, so I can only focus on so much at once.  I also want some Rhodiola Rosea and ginseng seeds. Some lizard tail turtle foot tobacoo seeds as well!

I want to avoid botchalism, the most.  It gets scary with home made foods too!  I have tasted bad home made tomatoe juice.  God awful stuff, I was really afraid that it might be botchalism.  I think it was bacteria.  I found two jars, from last years poject~

Ya, it was surely bacteria.  The jar that malfunctioned, has nothing visable growing.  I am going to wait until probably next month to get a print and supplies, for petri operations.  I will be careful with the dishes, I am a little worried about what all will grow.  Surely, I shall know how good the glove box is.  I used it with the fan off, the last time or two.  I am also going to plant one apple tree, in the back yard.  They can get large, so this may sustain a morel colony.  I know it will be trimmed up, so I can move around beneath it.

I have my blonde grain spawn on sterilized maple/alder chips fir sawdust mix and its doing killer. Almost ready to plant. I also broke a jar trying to break up the grains with as rubber mallet. The myc is very strong!! But I didn't want to waste it so I put in a bag of just soaked unsterilized or even pasteurized chips and sawdust mix and it took right off!! Ready to plant in 7-8 days! Got my blacks on grain now and its pretty weird!

So what I am saying is getting spawn with morels is as easy and maybe the easiest ever. You really need to sit back and really learn and perfect your agar work. once you got that masteted you can produce BOAT loads of spawn with ease. Its been tough reading this thread for the past few months and I would love to see you have some success!

Use Polypropylene containers you get sauce in from asian take away places.

Just like these, the right ones are best:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-free/134240423/Plastic_sauce_container/showimage.html

They are superior to petri dishes as they are PC-able, so you can pour your agar, put on the lid, stack them, wrap in a PP bag and then PC.

The lids stay nice and snug.  They stack very nicely.  They are re-usable.  They are cheap.

I did talk to myco supply.  Seems the petri dishes are what I thought they would be.  Gonna order here next month, then get started when the print gets here.  I will make 4 syringes out of the print.  I could use a loop and inoculate the agar that way, but I'd rather make syringes.  I should be able to have stuff to show off, pictures of colonies and such.  Should be interesting to see what all grows.  I had to much coffee today, so I feel like getting started.  Gotta wait though, sucks, but I am no rich man (or i would grow truffles).

Petri dishes came today.  With agar and light malt dextrose.  Also got some scalpels.  Waiting on the spore print and 8 pounds of rye grass seed.  I will try to fit a day of PC'ing into the work schedule.  I will have to PC the agar/drextrose in my quart jars with the filters, so I have a gas exchange and can get the lids off when the temps are160F.  I would have liked to use booze bottels but I don't have any.  Not going to the store just for the bottles and I don't drink that fast!

Also got 2 cross lock tweezers, so I can lift the mycelium wedges from the edge, into the rye grass seed jars.  I wish the apple tree was older, but things could be good in 10 to 15 years.  People aren't finding many morels this year, around here.  There have been mostly black morels.

Got the rye grass seed already.  Really great service from everybody.  Fast and speedy delivery.  Mailed in the order for the spore print.  That is the last item I am waiting on.  I can't wait to post some pics.  I doubt all 40 dishes will be contaiminated.  I find bacteria and molds interesting. but not what I am going for.

EDIT:  I don't think I will be diggin ditches, if the substrate colonizes.  I am thinking holes the size and shape of the quart jars.  I will space them out about 6-12 inches.  I have seen vids showing that they spread and fruit away from where planted.  I guess I will see what they do, in my backyard.  There are also 2 really old apple tree's at my Grandpaents.  I may plant some there to see what happens.  The Grandparents are in their early 80's, so they may ignore me and mow over them.

I plan on trying a substrate mix of sand, compost, apple wood sawdust, apple wood chips, bird seed and some oyester shell.  I have the ratio's written down somewhere in this thread, at least written down in my morel folder.

It is fairly close to an indoor method of growing morels.  I hope the substrate colonizes smoothly, but I have to do petri then master spawn, on rye grass seed first.

I want to start with a morel habitate in my backyard, then go to an orchard.  I only need about 16,000 morels for a down payment for my house............big dreams, Lol!

Now all you need to do is inoculate some small shrubs or trees in a greenhouse, that will stay in the greenhouse for the extent of the summer, then move the plants to an outdoor location in the fall. Watering the small shrubs or trees with salt water during their time in the greenhouse is also a good thing but not in excess. Then after planting in the fall come back in the spring during morel season and there is a very very very very very very very big chance there will be morels growing around those shrubs or small trees.

What sort of shrubs and tree's?  I have only heard of fir roots being inoculated with morels.  They also produce a very limited amount.  I have two apple tree's that I hope will sustain a morel habitate long after I am dead.  I recieved a letter from Florida Mycology Research Center, they are out of Yellow Morel prints.  I have the agar and dishes, so I am stuck on the idea of doing a print.  I know of one more place to get a print then it's back to ordering an LC and going strait to grain.  It is a bummer that way, because I can't go from grain to grain so I must have an LC for each jar as cultures don't break up easily.  One syringe doesn't inoculate more than one jar, very easily.  I really just want a print so I can go the agar route, and make my own syringes then make master spawn jars from wedges.  Honestly, I'd love to have agar dishes for $5 or $10 a piece and make 8 master spawn/grain jars.  I only need 2-4 master jars to do 16 cases............if things ever get that far.  Once I do get morels, I think I will be making a lot of spore prints.  Spore prints make morels worth $60 a large morel.  You could still sell the dried morel halves for a deal and make even more cash.  The only place I know of to get a morel print is $50.  That makes each large morel worth $100 a piece.  There seems to be no good place to get morel prints. someone could make a fortune if anyone is buying them.

EDIT:  I wanted to yeild and harvest 16,000 morels over the course of the project at one dollar a shroom.  If I harvested 16,000 morels for spore prints and sold them for $50 a half print that makes 1.6 million dollars.  I don't think I could unload 32k prints, unless China gets smart to growing morels.  I think it's a very funny revelation.

Hard time getting a print.  FMRC says they may know where to get one.  I only know of one more place online to get a print, at $50.  I think if or when I get some yellow's, I am going to take a lot of prints.  It's hard to find those around here, I don't have a lot of places to look.  If anyone knows a secret on the web to getting yellow morel prints, I would appreciate a pm.

Thanks

FMRC says that their person they know found the orcahrd to be turned to dust.  There is a bank selling white morel prints for $50.  I think they are yellow morels since they have the same latin name.  How much of a syringe do you put on agar?  I was thinking drops or a whole CC. But I don't want problems.  i am not going to use a loop, for whatever reason.

EDIT:  Fatguy's agar tech says he has been able to do 25 dishes with one syringe.  He does not say what CC syringe he uses.  I guess from that he is talking a 10cc or a 12 cc.  I will use a 12cc and use about a half of a cc.  I want to make sure that I have a good amount of spores on each dishes's agar/dextrose.

I could use some advice on how much to inject onto the agar medium.

Ordered a spore print from an online site.  They say it's white morel but Morchella esculenta.  White morel is actually morechella deliciosa.  It's the same labelling as the spore syringes I put into apple wood sawdust.  Deliciosa grows on ash or poplar and I can't easily get sawdust for those.  They labelled all screwy and I just burned almost $60!  I think I am best to get two syringes of LC for yellow morel and go strait to rye grass seed.  I can collect spores from those and run agar next year, if things pop up.  It's a real bumber that they are calling white morels esculenta when that's the name for yellow's.  I can worry later about spores from an LC and gathering spores from descending generations.  I hear that mushrooms decline if you always use generations of spores from proceeding generations.  I am not sure why, perhaps it's due to the great number of genetics in the wild?  I am fixed on growing yellow's!  I think who I ordered from is not going to refund my $, before they ship, they haven't shipped yet but it's processed.....if they do refund I will probably get  stuck with a restocking fee.  I think they should of labelled their gear with the right names!

Anyone know what the largetst morel ever found weighed?  I'll give the hint of 12 ounds 4 ounces.  That is a huge, heavy mushroom!  Imagine growing one of those every square foot for 200 square feet?  I w think if I found a 12 pound morel, I'd take two prints.  One print from each half, sell one and colonize agar with the other.  I really wonder what a print from the largest morel ever, would sell for on ebay?

I am glad I am getting the white morel print today.  I found beech sawdust at a fair price.  I may work on white morels over the winter and plant those in the spring.  I am fairly sure whites like beech, yellows like apple and blacks like oak.  I read a lot so I find all sorts of information.  I have read that whites like apple wood, but I have found no evidence of this in my experiments.

Penn state has a huge list of cultures for sale.  You can request either a slant or a petri dish.  They cost $125 a culture but there are many to choose from.  If things don't work out with the two cultures then I will order from Penn state.  I might even order some next spring.  I recieved my white morel spore print and it's huge, lot's of spores!  I recieved on of the 2 yellow morel cultures and am expecting the other saturday.  I will soak the rye grass seed tomarrow and pc followed by cooldown/inculation saturday.  This interest is getting addictive the more I learn.  I must get the yard fenced in by planting or there will be major animal problems.  A deer got to my green apple tree last night, a real bummer.

Just want to make a note about today's inoculating.  Steralized to quart jars of rye grass seed, 60 minutes at 16 psi.  When I went to clean off the injection port of the special lids.  I noticed one had a crack stemming from the GE port.  I decided to see what happens, injected the cultures into their jars.  The crack does not appear to go all the way through.  I covered the crack after removing from the GB, with a clean piece of gorilla tape.  Hoping for the best, knowing the worst can occur.  If this fails I am going to order petri dish cultures next spring from Penn state.  I think I know I would rather work with petri dish wedges much more than LC's.  I also have a white morel, what I believe is deliciosa spores.  Plenty of options, still a good amount of time to find what works and what doesn't.  The crack is one reason that I'd rather start more than what I require, to inoculate the  jars desired.  Petri dishes can offer more sections of culture than an LC.  I think a good dish should get four wedges, from the edges.  I could only do one master spawn with each LC, as don't like top break up an LC.  Hope to see growth in 3 days, more or less.

Seeing growth today.  Temps are about 76 degrees.  I was worried about things, but I am pretty sure this is growth.  I will get some pics up when things progress.  I really hope things go smoothly.  If this didn't work, which it should work, things looked doomed.  I really just would be happy seeing one morel that I planted, grow.  Well, 3-5 pounds a square foot would be a real dream.  But I will take an growth at this point.  I guess white morels just don't like apple wood.  Sometime I will order beech wood and see how white's grow with that.  It seems that whites look like yellows in a lot of peoples pics.  I really liked one pic of a morel with black spore sacks (forget the technical name) and white edges.  The contrast was so beautiful!

The growth is really taking off.  I think know, looking back, that the white morel spores tried to grow on the apple wood.  Apple wood just will not harbor white morel myc.  After seeing the myc from this yellow morel culture, I see similiar lines against the glass.  The thing is, that I see a lot more fuzzy rizomorphic mycelium on the grain.  I don't think I am going to post anymore.  As I do not get many responses and have not learned much from people here.

Dont give up posting, I always read what you have to say and I'm sure others do too. Morels are one of the hardest mushrooms to cultivate and not a lot of people have experience with them.

you're doing a service even by posting and documenting your initial efforts into the cultivation of morels.

I don't know why that is funny.  But anyways I am glad the posts are of service.  I have pulled together information from the web and plan on putting it all to the test.  I am afraid of people learningto farm morels from what I may learn or may have already learned.  On the other hand, if farming morels becomes a more common thing then perhaps the buisness will have more respect.

I guess it could be like farming ginseng.  Although morels should be just like they are in the wild, yet more consistant.

I might drop by from time to time.  This stuff does grow really fast.  Seems to be mostly growing on the service, the top of the grain.  I have seen some growing all the way to the bottom of one jar but it's just a little bit exploring.

I really don't know why that was funny.  I just don't want to be posting to myself all the time.

I'd like to see people have spores.  The spores are hard to find.  I have only found white morel spores.  Yellow morel spores were sold out at the only location that had them.  There is not a lot of good documentation on morels.  I think people confuse white morels with blonde.  I wish there was more authority on morels.

1000 wild mushrooms.  I just can't find any.  If I did find some I would be taking prints and perhaps tissue cultures of large ones.  I have noticed the grain is colonizing towards the top, mostly.  Perhaps it's the frsh air up there.  People don't find many morels around here.  They retail at the local store for $49.99 a pound fresh and $15.99 a half ounce dried.  They sell on ebay for about $30 a pound fresh and half that price dried.  I think farmed morels would be safer.  You don't have the same risk of verpas and you don't have to worry about animals going to the bathroom around your fungi.  It's just an adventure right now.  I have heard of sucess in small operations in backyards.  So that is what I am doing, but trying to expand if things go well.  I have heard of morels popping up/fruiting for up to 20 years after planting.  That makes it viable to plant and expand every year.  I think it's important to find what wood each morel grows on.  I have read conflicting information and have yet to personally confirm any of it.  Wood takes a long time to break down and supports sclerotium.  Those to variables indicate a long life cylce of a crop.  I really want to grow some big ones, but I don't expect to.

The big questions ahead are, will the different morels colonize the substrates I have planned and what will yeild be from each quart jar.  There is also always the question of contaimination rates.  I really just want to find out what yeild is for my substrate mix.

Here in Ohio we target dead elm and Live ash trees . I would think some nice shredded bark from a dead elm would work nicely. And i don't even pick the half frees hardly because i find enough "sponge" to be happy. I just dumped some rinse water and old shrooms near an ash tree, and in my flower bed. Within 2 years i had a bumper crop. But now only every other year it seems.

If it's every other year it may be due to moisture being low.  Blonde morels are said to love apple orchards.  I think apple is good for these, some say beech too.  I think beech may, may be good for white morels.  I am pretty sure black morels like oak.  I can get clean saw dust from core cuts, of all these types of wood.  I am in Ohio as well.  I don't have many places to hunt for morels.  We don't have the right tree's at the farm.  There are two apples and some cherry tree's, both are said to support blondes.  There are also cat's around these tree's.  Some crazy lady feeds them and builds plastic homes for them.  She lives across the street and drops off new cats.  It really pisses the family off.  I would plant blondes around these two large apple tree's, but the cats are an issue.

If blondes colonize apple wood, I will try whites with beech.  Then blacks with oak.

Yes blacks do like oak it seems. I find roughly 300-400 blacks each year. I only hunt one spot at a state park near me and find all there. But dead or dying elm are the real ticket to huge flushes. I found around 60 or so around one elm that was broke off about 6 feet from the ground this year. If you are interested i can see about getting some spore prints next year.

I am not going to work with these master grain jars, as I had planned.  I really believe that I'd rather tryto work with cultures from Penn State.  I can start with a viriety of very specific and thoroughly identified cultuers.  I have been excited to work with petri dishes and buying them makes it all the more simple.  I'd rather purchase books on the topic of Morels, and read these over the winter.  I would feel a lot more confident in selling morels and spore prints if I can say that they came from a State University Mycology Department.

Plus. stupid me!!!  I didn't cook the grain, thought I could get away with that one.  Oh well, mistakes are costly but not as much as giving up, without having learned lessons.

I dont believe these grain jars will colonize smoothly, stupid me but much smarter in the long run...and that is what I am woprking towards.

I will be back to post things I learn from reading, thoughts about this and that, regarding Morels and their cultivability.

I did come across some interesting information.  I read that 1/2 strength coffee helps sclerotium form.  I believe, using it for a single master grain jar, cooking the grain in 1/2 strength coffee, should be a fair test.  If I see more sclerotia, I will soak and cook with coffee, perhaps just cook with coffee.  There are likely many tricks to getting healthy sclerotium.  Temps and time seem to be the basics!

Whatever happens with these master grain jars, however they colonize.  I will plant them in my raised bed.  I don't want these cultures mixing with anything I get from Penn.  They do have a yellow morel culture there that is from 1998, labeled as commercial production.  That culture could be interesting, there is also another culture for yellow morel that is from Penn.  Probably best to get cultures that are either from commercial production or from my geographic area.  Although, commercial production could mean that it's a commercial culture.  I will write them and ask further questions when the time comes near.  If I am going to do 192 jars, I want the cultures to be the best I can get.  Also, I require a large pot to cook grain and sawdust in.  They have good ones at a drug store for about ten bucks.  Looks like something a soup kitchen would use.  I would be very surprised if these grain jars actually fruited outside.  Animals getting into the grain is likely, but I have been dumping the char and unburnt tobacco from my pipe, in this bed.  I get about 12 fluid ounces of this char and tobacco reminents every 3 or 4 days.  I neverhave bugs in my garden.

Soaking 3 cups of rye grass seed, dry measurement.  I want to transfer with a sterile fork some colonized myc into new jars.  I am going to cook the grain this time.  Bought a 20 quart stainless steel pot just for this purpose.  I think the new jars will colonize.  I don't want to spend 4 weeks just to see these two jars not colonize.  Plan is to do a test case or two, maybe more.  I don't know where all to put 16 cases, if its just a test.

I am soaking the grain for 48 hours, perhaps 40 some hours at least.  I'd like to start cooking the grain monday morning.  I will drain the soaked grain, add fresh water then the grain to the pot.  All water is distilled store bought water.  Then after cooking the grain for about 20 minutes (bring to boil then simmer for 20 or 15) I will rinse the grain with a gallon of distilled H2o.  The grain is going to be cooked until I can chew it easily or grains start to burst.

The grain will fill two jars to the 3 cup line.  I will PC with my home made lids, for 1 hour at 15 or 16 psi.  Cool down in the glove box with one sem-productive master grain jar that is semi colonized.  I only need two fork amounts to introduce culture.

I think I am going to give up on rye grass seed.  Probably just grow that where the morels get planted.  I have at least 5 pounds left.  I have a bag of ACE birdseed, looks good.  I risned, drained, scopped floaters and soaked in distilled water.  There are no sunflower seeds in there now, or whatever those black things are.  I hope the mycelium at the top of my rye grass seed is still viable, shall find out!  After reading more I have learned that rye grass seed is difficult to work with.  The problem with the previous run, is that the seed at the bottom formed a cake and the middle to the top dried out.  I have no idea how to solve that or how to prevent anything similar with the birdseed.  I will most likely give the bird seed and the rye grass seed a pc run.  I will cook both and well, wonder if it's more than simple research.  I only have so many ways to prepare a medium.  I will have to cook and jar the different substrates seperately, then pc at the same time.  To bad rye grass seed is so difficult.  I didn't cover the jars with foil, I had only used foil inside as a bi-layer with vermaculite inbetween, in previous research attempts.  Those were pre-fab as part of a kit, because I was a noob...I mean a total cherry.  I had no idea how mushrooms grew, nor how a cannabis plant matured.  It's taken some experiments to find out how nature works, legal or not, I had to know.  This is actually my first history with doing everything from home made stuff.  Thank God I can buy a pressure cooker.

I think bird seed should work.  I am not trying to grow sclerotia yet and I do want to try coffee (liquid).  I have not read much about what people have done and used for morls.  I have read a lot, but, it's not enough.  Thank the shroom lords that I am buying cheap cultures to work with.  Penn state is not at all a cheap inquiry.  I have all winter to experiment on tech.  I think I will need it.  I think I have to learn whether sclerotia grows mycelium after dormancy, I would think it does but nobody is talking to me!

http://www.thefarm.org/mushroom/morel.html

This is my basic source of info for wanting to grow morels.  They leave a ton of information out.

I am starting to strongly dislike rye grass seed.  I lost a lot of seed, just scooping off floaters!  I have enough to fill up two jars about half way each.  I am not sure why the bottom of my initial jars where so soaked.  I have no clue why.  I would doubt I soaked to long, as 24 hours without cooking is almost nothing.  Perhaps it is due to failing to scoop floaters.  There is about 1/3 to 1/2 floaters.  Nature is weird.  Sometimes it's the seeds that sink that are good, sometimes it's the floaters.  depends on which plant it is and I do not know rye grass very well.  I would love to plant these seeds.  Sow them actually.  When I let them grow tall through the fall, for cover for the morels, I will produce something else that mushrooms enjoy to combat over.

I am really startin to learn why people do what they do in techs.  I usually must find my own errors, to understand just all why things are done, the way they are done.  That is why I avoid chemistry, or the military....police and other hazardous professions.

In this above tech, in the link.  They show the master spawn having 1/5 soil.  This is unusual in the standard realm of growing mushrooms.  I suppose I could try that if all else fails.  I have yet to learn the purpose of using soil or compost for such an event.

They also grow sclerotia in their master spawn, within this tech.  I fail to see the purpose, in growing nuggets.  I know the purpose when it comes to a final substrate that will be planed, which is survival and fruiting..............so I believe.

Good thing I have years ahead of me...........so I believe.  There are many things to experiment with.  I have seen someone grow a jar with soil and sawdust.  Bird seed is cheap so I think that wuold be good.  I want strong healthy mycelium, yet soil showed some good pics.  Just thought that strait grain would be more potent, to introduce culture into final jars....where in scleriota growth is importan...........so I believe.

Thought about the use of potting soil.  I have a local compost that I use as potting soil.  I think this is the only way to employ rye grass seed.  I will give it a shot.  1 jar with 4 parts rye grass seed, 1 part compost.  Then 2 jars, one birdseed, one 4 parts bird seed 1 part compost.  So total of 3 jars, 2 having 1/5 birdseed.  I won't tap the jar on the counter either.  I did that before to level out the medium and it just compacts.

I think of the soil as a balance for moisture.  Always thought of it as a filler, but it could serve a useful purpose.

Cooking the rye grass seed now.  Got the birdseed cooked nd jarred.  One jar was a mixture of 1 part compost (1 cup) 4 parts cooked, rinsed twice, and drained well, birdseed (4 cups) .  Used 3 cups of this mixture, which has 2 Tbs liquid coffee.  The coffe is from a pot of five cups water, one Tsp dried coffee.  Both birdseed jars look nice, I hope the rye grass seed/compost comes out nice.  The rye grass see/compost will be the same ratio as the birdseed/compost.  Will pc soon, then cool down in the glove box (once the pc is cool enough to open).  Will do 60 minutes at 16 psi (I seem to always go one psi over and stay there).

PC has 20 mins left.  I placed the master grain jar into the clean glovebox.  I don't use the fan, but anyways this jar formed a crack in the lid as well.  I have noticed that these lids are not worth the price.  They crack from the ge port, in the direction of the injection port.  My home lids have only failed once.  It was from pulling the needle out, without holding the silicon down with two fingers.  I hope the pc run works well.  I get a little concerned, about what is in the jars below the pc water line.  It always cooks more there.  Perhaps a layer of sand could solve that and allow sclerotia to form, within that layer?

The transfers are complete.  A healthy amount of myc is in each jar.  I just hop that the myc didn't dry out to much.  Maybe things will get some moisture.  The new jars look real good.  Kept the master grain jar used, just put the lid back on to see what grows.  Over all, I'd say there is a shot at seeing a test run suceed.  Probably just two cases if things work with this phase.

Seeing good signs in the jars. The rye grass seedthat was transfered, is noticably white & fuzzy!  The rye grass seed w/compost, appears to be colonizing faster.  The strait birdseed jar, appears to be the slowest, and least progressive.  It is early, so in time I will find what works best (confirm or deny really).

I really enjoy working with morel myc, it's forgiving so far...lol

I believe this is a sclerotium forming.  The grain is not colonizing very well, but it is moving along.  My phone takes ugly pics and the lighting is poor today.  Otherwise, I would post pics of the compost jars and birdseed jar.

The jar pictured, is the rye grass seed jar I shook.  I have had a hard time breaking up all of the jars.  There is usually one big clump in every jar.  I plan on using a sterile fork to scoop.  It's just an experiment at this point.  The jar I did not shake does not appear to have a single sclerotium.

sometimes if i have a stubborn jar, that wont shake and i still want to use it as spawn, i will sanitize or flame sterilize my scalpel and break it apart enough to get through the jar and then smash it with my gloved hand. I imagine a good spoon would work well too.

The plan at this point is to use an auger to drill holes in the ground.  A hole for each quart jar, then just scoop out the fat little nuggets....and wait.  So I don't really require cakes, or I should of purchases smaller jars that the cakes can just slide out.  Was going for yield.

either way will probably work. May want to add a few bits of morel food like ashes at the inoculation point or spread around the area.

also you might consider using the grains to make sawdust spawn as it will be less likely eaten and carried away by insects and other small critters.

The final spawn where sclerotia are key, will be more than 25% sawdust.  There will be some birdseed, but this is all experimental at this point.  So far the myc loves the compost, those jars are colonizing quickly.

Just some observations, today is the 2 week mark.  Birdseed/compost is doing the best.  A little early to say 100% colonized.  I see growth starting at the bottom, once this gets thicker, the jar is 100%.  The rye grass seed jar is colonzing well, in second place.  Birdseed with no compost is the slowest.  The strait birdseed and the rye grass seed/compost have some areas that are thick.  Birdseed compost has colonized with a better consistency.

I find that birdseed compost wins.  Sclerotium have no purpose that I am aware of, for a master spawn.  Just looking for good myc, that will colonize final substrate meant for forming sclerotia.

Over all I am pleased.  Looking forward to the next phase of testing.  Sure hope to get some spore prints off of this culture, in the spring!

Opened the first two master spawn jars.  These were the strait uncooked/but pressure cooked, rye grass seed jars.  I noticed a fruity ethanol smell, mostly towards the poorly colonized bottoms.  Dumped these in an old burn pile, as this will be my dump for anything that isn't moldy or laced with bacteria.

It smelled like a nice fruity beer, but very mild.  I'm don't know a lot about yeast or brewing processes.  But, the birdseed/compost is looking like the best bet, so far.  Will get to smell that jar when I am through clonizing the 2 test cases.

Goal for next spring is to get some prints from this culture.  I get those and I will be happy, and I will feel much more confident about getting dishes from the university.

There is one week left until it has been a full month.  I believe the birdseed/compost jar is the winner. The bottom of this jar should be thickly colonized when this final week is through.  On the 30th and 31st, I will pc the sclerotia substrate jars, one case a day.  These will be simple tests, to test the ability to form sclerotium, fruiting capabilities, and the possibility of spore prints being taken.  I must get temps down to 65, when these final sclerotia jars are colonized.  I hope this is easier than I think, as 65 is a difficult temp to maintain in a house.  Sclerotia forming is paramount, no sclerotium, no morel.

It has myc everywhere, but I hope by July 30th it's full enough to use as a masterspawn.  It only takes a small amount from the top, to colonize the final sclerotia jar.  Since two test cases are the plan, a lot of masterspawn is slated to be dumped, in an old burn pile.

Goals continue as follows:

Test sclerotia forming abilities of substrate
See if anything survives the bitterly cold winter and fruits in the spring
Get prints from any lucky fruity tooty mushrooms, for genetic preservation.

Even if the last two goals fail, it seems worthy to get some dishes from penn state.  I do suspect that I will see some fruits, if I do form more than one sclerotium.

Oh ya, I still smell this sharp pepper mushroom smell.  It's very unique.  I am also planning on visiting the morels at the local stroe next spring.  A little bit of biz intel.

Going to soak the birdseed and sawdust tomarrow, for one case.  Then soak another case worth on monday, for a pc on weds.  I will boil and simmer the sawdust, to help absorb water and help cleanse.  The only contaimination, that I have witnessed so far, was with an uncooked sawdust jar.

I am excited for this phase, it should be the most interesing.  A lot depends on this going well, and forming sclerotia.  I hope to start planting these jars on Sept 21st.  We have the perfect average temps starting on this day.

I hope to learn more about what causes sclerotia to form mycelium or to fruit.  There is very little information on this.  It seems in my best understanding, that sclerotia can do both.  I have yet to see whether fruits grow directly from sclerotia, or from myc growing from sclerotia.

There is much to observe and learn, I hope to contribute something worthy.

Thanks for reading

I have the sawdust, wood chips and birdseed soaking now.  These will be for the case pc'd on tuesday.  I have a couple of concerns.  First, I noticed some white mycelium on the woodchips.  They were not large and should be dead in the pc.  I am mostly concerned about enzymes left behind, these could become an issue, hopefully not.  I am also going to estimate how much coffee to use in hydrating the compost and sand.  It will be atleast 24 tbs.  That guess is simply based on the 2tbs per jar used in the 1/5th compost, 4/5ths birdseed jars.  There will be more compost and the addition of sand.  The birdseed and wood will have had a 48 hour soak and a boil 'n simmer.  So, the wood and birdseed should be at their moisture limit.  When I hydrated the compost for the masterspawn, it was enough that the texture clumped a little bit.  I have had no issues with this level of moisture, as the masterspawn colonized very well.  I will have more than enough masterspawn.  The strait birdseed never colonized more than half way.  I will smell for ethanol when I dump it outside.  I do suspect ethanol has been produced, as this appears to be typical of that.  I have no idea why the yeast is surviving at the bottom of the jars.  Yeast does not appear to be an issue, with the compost containing jars, this is good.

I was ust looking into buying biochar.  I would like to make it, but I would need a spot.  I think it only takes a hole in the ground.  Start a fire and cover with dirt, then leave a pipe sticking out? I suppose any wood could work, it seems morels grow on all sorts of substrates.  They do prefer certain woods decomposing, but it may not matter as much when it's burned.

Got some thinking to do.

Hi, im new to morel growing.

I have a jar of M.esculenta grain growing, the myc isnt strong or anything nor does it look like regular myc.Its just strands that are growing including sclerotias that are getting bigger and bigger. I made a jar with some manure and after it was colonized i added grain but the grain never colonized like most mushrooms do.

Would a fuel pellet mycobag be good for morels ?

The recipe i use for shittakes goes like this :

1 cup  bran
7 cups fuel pellets
7-8 cups water
30 ml gypsum

Thanks!

Re: I want to grow Morels outside [Re: sofievergais22]
    #18627700 -

Hello sofievergais22!  I suppose it depends on what the fuel pellets are made of.  What type of wood, what additives, such as a binder.  There are oak pellets, sold at a myco store online.  Those are compressed oak sawdust.  These would be good, in my opinion, for black morels.  I hope to give those a try some day.  Beech is almost impossible to find online, so I wonder how birch would work for white morels.

I will be giving more serious thought, to making a biochar kiln.  I think it would be interesting, to see how biochar, made from specific woods, would affect the morel production.  It would be expensive, unless I can go out and get tree's from people, that they don't want.  It's a concern finding finding apple wood, that has not been sprayed.  Mushrooms absorb these toxins, very much.

That is why it's not good to eat morels from a non-organic apple orchard.

Re: I want to grow Morels outside [Re: sofievergais22]

I would be interested in what type of wood.  Morels are very picky, with what woods per what morel.

I cleaned the case of jars, that will be used tomarrow. I must pc twice, since I can only fit 7 jars at a time.  I put two empty jars, without tops, in with the last 5.  Everything is soaking nicely.  All the sawdust has sunk to the bottom.  The wood chips are floating, perhaps cooking them will cause them to sink.  I always skim off what birdseed floats.  I did not want to skim any floaters, with the wood, due to costs.

I am not sure how I will pc and inoculate 16 cases, next year.  That will be a lot of work.  32 pc cycles, just to do the sclerotia jars.  If I do go ahead and order from Penn state (culture), I will try to get 4 masterspawn jars for each culture dish.

Temps are barely enough.  Temp is about 70 F, I prefer 75 F for growing morel myc.  The target after 4 weeks, is 65F, for growing sclerotia.  I have until Sept. 21st to get sclerotium.

Thanks Mad Machinist.

I do believe sclerotia can grow either sclerotia or more myc.  It seems to be one or the other, in my readings.

I have the last 5 jars, of the first case, in the pc.  I didn't add coffee or any fluids to todays substrate.  It appeared to have enough in the mix.  I could just form clumps in my hands.  This will be a test.  I think I will add liquid coffee to the next batch, tomarrow or the next day.

I am not a fan of cooking non-food items.  Using the pc or cooking birdseed is a chore.  I didn't boil n simmer the sawdust.  It seemed that it was just extra labor.

The first 7 jars are cooling, they look good enough.  There is moisture on the walls of the jars, the insides.  Some wood looks soaked and cooked, others look a tad dryer.  All wood is darker than when in a cool water bath, aka soaking.  There was a little moisture already in the sand and compost.  I was more worried about it being too wet, than not enough.  I belive now, that it's just wet enough, it could go more but not more than 10% less.  Could be iffy, perhaps not.

The pc work is done, for today.  Waiting on the jars to cool down, for innoculating.  Probably gonna take 4 hours.  I don't like using the stove on high heat.  Last time, I was boiling some birdseed and I had a flame.  It's electric, so any fire is bad.  I have learned to clean that stove, inside and out.  Seems that these large metal containers, tend to reflect a lot of heat back down.  So if there is anything down there, any food or grease, anything at all, it will burn.  I will also get smarter about putting hot tap water, into the birdseed boil.  It goes a lot faster when it starts with hot water.  The pc, says to use 2 quarts of boiling water, that way it boils a lot faster.

Not sure how I will get through 16 case, wish I had some workers!  Lol!

Just finished up innoculating the case.  One jar had a malfunction, the ge port was sealed shut, with silicon.  I do hope that this does not occur very often.  I would rather see a contimate grow, than some sort of pre-fabication error.

I did not attempt to inoculate this lone jar.  I know I could of, to see how the myc or sclerotia preform with ge.  I decided to leave this jar, as a test.  A test of what else will grow, if anything at all.  It as opened for a second or two, within the glove box.  So it will test the filter and the sterility of the glovebox.

The innoculant has not turned white and fuzzy yet. This is not a good sign.  I expected, that if there isa lack of moisture in the substrate, this would be more of a problem towards the end of the jar life.

The sand and the compost are not that wet by themselves.  Only in adding the wood and birdseed, was there much moisture.

I have the dry mix in a bucket.  I am going to let it air dry some.  That way when I do mix the wet ingrediants in, I can be certain that coffee is a good additive.

Kinda bummed, but I have plenty of substrate ingrediants for more experiments.  Who knows, the first case could start to grow in the next 48 hours.

Okay, things work again.  I dumped the strait birdseedmasterspawn jar, in the old burn pile.  There were no smells of ethanol, so I don't know why it's growth went it poop.  It was drying out at the top and really slowed down it's growth.

I think why I am not seeing as fast growth with the jars down yesterday, is it's only 72F in there.  Seems like plenty of moisture, as there is condensate on the jars, where there is no substrate.

I wish I was pc'ing today, but I am tired and agro.  Was going to do farm work but it's raining, so I won't do much.  I like to pack the jars outside, since things can get messy mixing the substrate.  On the other hand, the wood is soaking nicely.  I think the sawdust adds the most moisture, but I don't want to much.  Might go ahead and add 24 tbs of coffee (liquid), as this isnot much fluid.

175 acres would be nice, wish I had  that.  As for these two test cases.  I will plant in my raised bed, one case.  The other case will go along the edge of some woods, a grassy area.

That is an out of focus, cell phone pic, of yellow morel myc, overgrowing an apple wood chip.

Finished pc'ing all the jars, waiting for the last case to cool down for innoc.  I think that everything they require is in the mix, so almost anywhere should sustain them.  I am going to try different locations that I have access too.

I took other pics of this myc growing onto an apple wood chip.  They are blank spots on the USB memory drive.  Dunno why they didn't come out, seems perhaps one could of been bette.  Oh well, maybe I shall take more pics soon enough.

I did have a malfunction with another jar.  One in each case isn't the end of the world.  I will improve this by getting new lids, so there will only be a ge port.  The issues are either the ge port is sealed, or the lc ports break off.  A lc port broke off, on todays jar.  Put gorilla tape over this hole, actually seen this work before.

The first case is looking great, temps are up into the upper 70's.  So things are good enough.  My dog is happy.  I put him in a cage when I do the pc or innoc.  I can't be having issues with him, as I am at sensative points in the progress.  He likes his cage, hangs out in there a lot during the day.  I give him a couple of walks and food/water breaks when I can.  I like to stick to a schedule, and things worked out well.

Just wanted to add some of the things that must be done, for safety.  I wouldn't do this with young kids around, unless they were older and could watch tv.  Using the pc is very sensative and dangerous.  Boiling water and pressure could be a bad situation.

The first case looks great, really starting to take off.  The second case should catch up soon, a couple of days.  I really like to see the myc grow over a apple wood chip.  It's cool to watch it grow so quickly.  I think the myc should enjoy the sand.  The mix seems very good, I shall see just how well it colonizes.

Too bad I don't have a macro camera.  There are a lot of details I cannot capture in a pic, on a cell phone.

The second case is eally catching up, it will most likely do better.  This makes me a tad concerned about the first case.  Maybe I will do another two cases.

The second case is a little more fuzzy, and appears to be colonizing through the substrate faster.  I think the coffee helps simulate burned material, as it is roasted.....lol

Checked the dump in the old burn pile.  Seems the myc is rotting.  I didn't bury the myc or anything else dumped.  It has a sour smell and a rotten look, kinda slimy and soft looking.  It's been attracting a lot of bugs.  I was hoping that eventually the dump would grow some morels.

It's still fairly warm here, but been cooler.  I am at 40.8 North in Ohio.  We have had a lot of rain this year.  No critters have been seen in the dump.  Perhaps the dump will just be a dump.  I would enjoy seeing it compost and eventually colonizing.

I may use the rye grass/compost jar as a replacement for the jar that has a sealed ge port.  No visable sclerotia in any of the master spawn jars.

I may have to go away from using birdseed or anything that gets funky.  Going with just wood, compost and sand, may be the way to go.

Took a watering container, standard garden type....filled it 3/4 with city water and a few squirtsof 3% hydrogen peroxide and applied to the burn pile.  Seems this will be the best shot of anything ever coming up there. Just for shits and giggles, but it would be nice to see morels coming up, under varying conditions.

There is a family of wild turkeys, that wonders around my backyard and neighborhood.  Today I saw the mom, right at the burn dump.  Maybe the birdseed is cleaner now that peroxide was applied.  There is also a groundhog and once in a blue moon some coons or deer.  I am lazy and should fence the yard in next year.  I need to winch on someones jeep, to stretch the fence.  The jeep owner is building a house and going back to school soon.  Seems the fence won't get built this year.  Just wanting some morel success, as long as I get to see something and a print.

If any of us become successful at growing morels.  We should form an organization and control prices like they do with diamonds.

I see myc in the burn pile, very exciting!!!!  Seems peroxide is worth it's cost, for sure!!!  I might have to use peroxide on the places I plant morels.....might be a requirement to fight off rot.

Will keep the readers updated.

After looking back through posts, I fear that this substrate I am using for sclerotia formation, is slower at growing myc.  I have really good growth in pics, of the master spawn jars, at 9 days.  The first case will be at 7 days, tomarrow.  Temps are cooler, and I am not going to turn on the heat, for some jars.

It is possible that the myc is growing thinner, at this phase.  It's hard to see growth in the light, that I have been using.  The sand is something that might grow sclerotia better than myc, most likely.  I guess I have to wait more, to really get a good idea what is going on.  On know there is growth, it's not clear enough to get a good idea what's going on.

Kinda sucks, gotta figure this out.

This substrate is not colonzing the way I thought it would of.  The myc is very thin, where it is growing.  I am hoping to see it form sclerotia, over growing thick mycelium.  My substrate isn't much different, than what is posted in the tech.  I don't have the rice husks and those things, so perhaps that's why........oh ya and the soy meal.

Re: I want to grow Morels outside [Re: Morel Guy]

The weird formations in my masterspawn jars, might be sclerotium.  Seems the birdseed/compost jar is turning a little redish.  Not yet a rust color but redish.  Mine seem to suck in as well, like they are dehydrating.  Then sometimes they grow myc on the outside, so I can't really see past that, into whatis going on.

It's strange and a little frustrating.  I though the sclerotium, would be more clearly visable.  These master spawn jars are about 5 weeks old.  So these may very well be sclerotium, forming.  The ryegrass seed/ compost, has more of this stuff and it should.  Yet theirs is more of a brown color.

I think sclerotia grow myc when their is moisture, so there might be a lot of moisture interacting....causing what I am seeing that is curious.

Sclerotium can be all sorts of sizes and shapes.  This is my first time, so I hope to learn more.

I wonder if these pics are showing sclerotium.  Seems a bit strange, compared to what little bit is on the web.  It's not very rusty and hard to see any dimensions when it's in the jar.

Been keeping the masterspawn jars in the bedroom drawer.  The AC is on at night and sometimes in the day.  Not sure what sclerotia look like from outgrow's yellow morels], but these could be it.

I put some old plant tone around my tomatoe plants, the other day.  They are in a raised bed, filled with the compost.  Today and atleast yesterday, I noticed a white mycelium, growing on this top dressing.  This is also the raised bed, that I dumped the apple wood sawdust jars.  These jars each had a syringe of what I believe is white morel spores.  I think that this may be morel myc, it's growing just like morel myc.

I was planning on planting a case, of what I have started last week, in this raised bed.  They could mix, seems there isn't enough or high quality identification of morels.  It would have to be a DNA analysis to be sure what morels are which.

I hope this stuff spreads like wild fire.  There was more rot in the burn pile.  I believe the rot was due to a heavy rain.  Thus, I applied more peroxide solution.  There is a lot of birdseed in the burn pile.  Suppose I could build a fire and hope for the best, or wait for sclerotia and then burn?

The small bright white specks, at the top of the substrate.  I think this is contaimination, but will wait to see what it does.

I have formulated a new substrate mix.  It's based more off of the morel tek.  Seems they go over 100% in their formula, so I rewrote it for 100%.  I cut a little sawdust to make room for the soybean meal and rice husks/hulls.  Found a place online that sells both, at a good price.  They also accept money orders.

The first pics are from the raised bed.  Never saw mycelium growing on the top dressing, before adding those throw away sawdust jars.

Last two pics are of the burn pile.  Second to last is the birdseed/compost master spawn.  No sclerotia visable when digging through.

Last pic is of the dump that rotted, heavy rains came and rot ensude.  There was myc growing, but the damn rains came.

I talked via email to the lady that is the head of the mycology department at Penn State.  She said 833 yellow morel should be good for me.  It's the original culture, the one used for an indoor operation.  I thought an unusual and not very tasty morel culture was used for the indoor.  But I got that information from shoomery, so who knows where they got that tid bit.

I have a new mixture planned.  I think the final jars should colonize a little better with rice hulls and soybean meal.  I will not use birdseed in the final jars, only the masterspawn jars.  Atleast I know I can do a masterspawn, it works well.

Not much else to report today.  The two cases are colonizing a little bit better, the hope for these is sclerotium forming.

Four jars have the bright white speckled contaimination.  In one of the jars the the white speckled contaim, is growing more but it's still small.  I think this is what was on the apple wood chips.  I do not plan on using the chips anymore, just the sawdust.

The jars that had coffee added are growing better, but still growing less than expected.  I believe a rice hulls and soybean meal addition should get better growth.

No more apple wood chips, never again.  Going to get the rice hulls and soybean meal., sometime.  I have to get new lids too, made them all for lc injections.  Not sure when to start communicating with penn state again.  I don't want the cultures to late or to early, seems 3 months can be good....but I might take a month to pc 16 cases.  I think the outgrow culture sucks, no sclerotia what so ever.  Not  so sure it's due to the light leaks, seems they should still form some slclerotia anyhow.  The outgrow culture is rizomorphic but no sclerotia.  I guess that is what a $25 culture will preform as.  I think I might get two dishes of culture from penn state.  Better double up on it and do 7 jars.  I could do 8 with those but it's another pc run.  Trying to keep things chill, not sure what to do with that last wedge, maybe just make three bigger ones....lol.

I am concerned about temps.  The tech says 68f - 71f is ideal.  Temps are usually 74f.  Even in the basement it's 74, it's not an underground basement.  I am also thinking about getting a gorilla grow tent, for a light proof area for the jars.  I  could grow sclerotia in the winter, and plant in the spring.  I suppose I will have to water wherever these are planted, anyways.

It's difficult to have the ideal conditions.  I did read where spores are sold, that morels colonize between 70f  and 80f, but the tech says much lower....although they use these temps to grow sclerotia at all phases other than on agar.

i live in a house built in the 50's.  It's brick but it does not have central air or heat.  I only have an air conditionar in the bedroom window.  I am having a hard time bringing myself to having a 5 x 5 gorilla tent up there........which I could surely have the ideal temp, but I like it much colder when I sleep.

Perhaps I can put a new window in the basement, for another ac unit.  It would cost more to operate that........it's a bitch right now, arrr!!!

Been thinking about a better setup for a better culture.  I am saving for a gorilla grow tent, 5 x 5.  With a vortex s-line 8 inch fan, these are new and supposed to be more quiet.  There is a window in the basement that I will try to get updated/replaced.  Put a window a/c in there and keep the basement at 68f.  There will be an increased power bill, but I do hope to justify the costs.  It shouldn't be that much more expensive, verses hurting the culture/sclerotia jars.  I do also require one more bread rack, these are difficult to find locally, as they do sell out often.

Still planning on getting to 16 cases, but things need upgraded to make that a worthwhile effort.

I do enjoy that you continue to post your progress, failures, thoughts and activities.

It's very handy for others who might be interested in future cultivation attempts and can hopefully learn from your failures.

Does the mycelium on agar race as a barely invisible first process, then consolidate, then turn orange and crispy, then get dotted with 'micro sclerotia' and then darken more?

I have yet to run any petri dishes.  I have only used outgrows yellow morel culture, and I doubt it's what they say.  I never saw any sclerotia, just sem-dried sections of myc that turned yellowish.  I dumped all the jars just now.  The myc ridden jars had a mild fishy fungus smell.  The jar that when I opened during innoc, it had a smell more mild yet similiar to a bad jar of homemade tomatoe juice.

I will learn a lot more when I get 2 petri dishes from penn state.  Those should be the real deal, if I don't get sclerotia out of those then I am surely doing something wrong. At least outgrows culture was cheap and good practice.  I am also thinking about trying to sell some selfed spores from the pennstate culture if things get that far.  The penn state culture is said to be the original and used for indoor morel cultivation on a commercial scale.

I may have to increase my pc time to 1.5 hours.  I may also buy a new pressure cooker, I have also thought about a sterilzer.  Do sterlizers have a digital read out of the desired temp or pressure and remain there?  And do sterilizers require water for the inside of the machine such as pressure cookers?  My best guess is that a sterilzer would be more secure and require less attention, I think I would still be watching.

I  won't be posting much.  I plan on getting the penn state culture in may/june of 2014.  I am saving for a gorrila grow tent 5x5 a vortex fan for g/e and another bread rack. I also can't forget to order enough rice hulls and soybean meal.  Have to get all new jar lids and I should have enough sawdust (45 pounds remaining).  I have enough birdseed for the master spawns and will require more compost for the sclerotia jars....more sand too!

I am going to try real hard on staying finacially focused, so I can do this by the required date.  Sucks to pc but that's the way it's gotta be done.  Doing a case a day, which takes many hours, takes 16 days to do.  That is okay as my start date for planting is sept 21st, we usually don't get freezing temps well into mid October.

I could colonize jars in the winter months, but I want to put a LED light into the tent.....in the event that funky plants are legal.......medical or legal recreation.

Gotta plan for hopes and dreams!!!

I could try strait sawdust spawn, but I first want to plant sclerotium/spawn as that should be interesting and valuable.

Morel Guy - Just wanted to add to the voices above urging you to continue updating. I have been reading this thread on and off since last spring. Can't wait to see your updates in late winter/early spring.

I am trying myself with two syringes I received in a trade - one black morel and one yellow. I just nocced up some hardwood sawdust + plant matter + wood ash with the black culture. Good luck.

leschampignons, good luck with your innoc.  I hope the trade is good to you.  I do believe the cultures online are trash.  I think spores could be good, but I hope tohave good luck with a university culture.  I can't find any yellow morel spores online.  Just white morel spores and I do worry about peoples indentification and what names they give to what.  Private trade is probably a good option. one I have not persude.

If morels form sclerotia on agar, I don't think the cultures sold online are legit, cause they would have sclerotium.  Sclerotium would cause issues with an lc.  It would beinteresting to have different spore prints of morels from different points on the map.  I do wonder how much variation exists, as morels are not a very well studied topic.  There seems to be little authority on identification, a lot of what I read contradicts.  Morels appear to be mostly privately studied, since there is not a major morel industry worth studying ( attempts at buisnesses growing morels and wild harvests is it).  Seemsthe experts keep a lot about morels secret, due to their value.  There isn't much on growing truffles out there either.  I hope to make morel cuiltivation more common, and simpler if it can be.

Yeah I have read that North America is the epicenter for diversity of Morchella species. Just so many different kinds that seem like they thrive in completely different environments. Read a paper yesterday that the burn morels (in this case M. Tormentosa) has a tube like structure different from that of any other morel species.

However I think there are some similarities that can be exploited as well between the species of this genus:

In another paper they describe forming partial or complete ectomycorrhizal relationships between multiple species of pine, spruce, and other trees. I can post some links if you want.

Elata and Esculenta complexes both seemed to make these connections.

Other papers say they saw ectomycorrhizal relationships between certain species sunflowers and/or other plants

So
I am planning on making some spawn if I can get this culture up and running and planting a bunch of different young trees and plants in some dirt/morel spawn mix. Then waiting to see what comes of it. Perhaps then i'll burn the plants to simulate forest fire, or just cut em to kill them and see how the morels respond.

This website sells elm trees inoculated with morels. I figure many have seen this before:http://www.morelfarms.com/

Yes, I have read what's online about some morels having relationships with the roots of certain tree's.  This is the same for porcini as well.  I have 2 apple tree's and one's roots are already colonized by a bright yellow mushroom, has a cap that can be as large as 2 - 2.5 inches.  I am also curious about using biochar as spawn.  It's about $50 for a 25 pound bag, much cheeper and specific to make my own....by I have yet to talk myself into doing that, or my family.

I think the best thing is for people to post what they learn, about growing morels online.

I saw a pic once, oline, showing a white morel that had black pits with bright white ridges.  I would love to have some genetics from that exact type of fruit.  Seems some whites online look like yellows and are sold as esculenta when their deliciosa........maybe I'm wrong in my identification, but I need a good id book that is absolutely certain on id's.

I have been looking in the dump pile.  Haven't seen much but some small white myc on small chunk of wood.  Not sure what it is, too hard to tell.  The funky smells are not there, just a normal musky smell of earth.  I doubt myc from morels is easy to spot in nature.  I never went digging around in a morel growing area to spot myc or sclerotia nuggets.

The dump is very wet but no rot.  The new substrate should be a lot better.  Going to follow the tek a lot more accurately.  Guess I was just playing around with cheaper culture to figure something out.

I will be surprised to see if anything pops up in the spring.  Can't be sure what I got from og.
