Hi. Thinking of growing morels for profit.
    #1623377 -

Does anyone have any good recommendations on who is reputable to order morel sporeprints from? I am thinking of converting my garage into a morel factory, I am looking for advice on setup and initial costs involved. Anything will be helpful. Can someone help me get started? Thank you.

Wow, from 1 to 100, huh?
I?ll have to disappoint you, there is only 1 company in the world that has successfully grew morels under controlled conditions, and they won?t tell you how. I?d suggest you to start with some less complicated species, oysters of some kind for instance. Visit www.mushworld.com .

check out this page:

The process is patented though, so growing them for proit via this method could likely get you in trouble

This isn't a new process... I believe it was develloped in the 80's. It's about sclerotia formation.

Edit:
Perhaps someone should try growing morels in concentrated areas with bacteria, and using very spaced inoculations points...

I don't remember where I read it (if you want the sources, tell me, I'll try to find them) but this mycologist studied morel evolution's from yeast.
He found out that morels don't have many enzymes. Also, he claims morels feed on bacteria and instead of using enzymes to kill them, it uses acid.

He also said that most research on morels is erroneus because after a third subculture, the mycelium gets very weak and abnormal.

thz mistah MushMushi and sir Anno for the replies. its seems that the morels is a somewhat of an anomaly(agreed), according to the article. yes if i can i believe what i read, the the morel retains and reverts back to some yeast like mechnism because of its evolutionary survival response to the ICE AGE !!!  i say OK...and would advise that u  would have had to have been paying attn in bio classes to get a complete understand. there is a tutorial on bio chem at that link if anyone want to brushup!  i would prefer the Edison method; many experiments until u get it rite. Morchella i think u are strange and mysterious.  ps. a good intersesting in depth article it maybe a little dry for some of our hands on crowd..thz

That is some far out shit. I would really like that guy to back some if his statements with some citation though, in fact, I am surprised that he did not do so given his education.

Interesting theory. To test it out I think I'll hydrate a couple spawnbags of grain leave them unsterilized, then innoculate them with cultures I have of angusticeps/esculenta and see how they perform. Any thoughts?
I know they'll colonize sterilized grain very quickly, I have several bags of grainspawn that the outer portions were covered in about 4 days, it's been about 10 days since innoculation and they're almost fully colonized.

After reading the link I decided to do some more research at the library.  I picked up some papers on the phylogenetics of morels.  I think that this guy is totally wrong.  In order for Morels to have been recently descended from yeast so too would the Verpa sp.  and the Gyromita sp. (spelling?) as well as all the other cup fungi.  Morels as well the other Verpa and the Gyro are relatively closely related to each other and clearly seperable on the basis of DNA sequences, and they are all relatively distant related to S. cerivisae based on the same DNA sequences.  Well I guess that is it..... :sun:
