selling dried morels?
#7784978 - 12/21/07 09:53 AM (16 years, 1 month ago) |

I've been browsing the forum researching cultivation of various mushrooms and it hits me.. I need money.. I have a ton of dried morels, and i start to wonder if there is a buy/sell/trade on the forum.. I didn't see one.. but would it be against the rules for me to try to sell them on shroomery? If not, what would be another good place to sell them online?
Thanks, Palidon.

That is for the market place.
Which unfortunatly you cant see until around 50 posts it think and been registered for more than 90 days???
Im not sure exactly the rules of the market place, but if its illegal in your state/country then no you cant sell.
"Morel" redirects here. For other uses, see Morel (disambiguation). Morel
Scientific classification Kingdom: Fungi Division: Ascomycota Subdivision: Pezizomycotina Class: Pezizomycetes Order: Pezizales Family: Morchellaceae Genus: Morchella Species
Morchella angusticeps Morchella conica Morchella costata Morchella crassipes Morchella elata Morchella esculenta Morchella gigas Morchella semilibera Morchella spongiola Morchella spongiola var. dunensis Morchella vulgaris Morchella sp. MA4SSI73 Morchella sp. UC 1475091
Morchella, the true morels, is a genus of edible mushrooms closely related to anatomically simpler cup fungi. These distinctive mushrooms appear honeycomblike in that the upper portion is composed of a network of ridges with pits between them. These ascocarps are prized by gourmet cooks, particularly for French cuisine. Commercial value aside, morels are hunted by thousands of people every year simply for their taste and the joy of the hunt. Morels have been called by many local names; some of the more colorful include "merkels" or "miracles," based on a story of how a mountain family was saved from starvation by eating morels ["The Day the Sun Came Out" by Dorothy M. Johnson], and Dryland fish, due to their similarity in taste to fish.
Good ole wikepedia answered ny stupidness.
Just wait around until the market place opens up for you.

Hmm, ok, well what if I found someone to sell them to in bulk? I have 14 pounds of them, they have been dehydrated, what can I expect to sell them for per pound (dry)?

eBay has a pretty busy market of dried morels. I think two to three auctions for dried morels close everyday.

Man, that's a right good amount of money you're sitting on! I've seen dry Morchella go for $140 a pound.

It looks like they are selling for in between $90-120 a pound. I've been watching these auctions because I wish to put fresh cultivated mushrooms on eBay. I have never seen morels go unsold on eBay. I've been watching for the last couple weeks.

Good luck.
Way off topic here, but I just got back from the grocery store and there was a company named Aromatic Organics that had dried oysters and chanty's for sale in this overdone packaging for a whopping $106 per pound!!! That's where they get you. The individual packages were $4.99, but that was for 3/4 of an ounce. Unbelievable rip off!

*sniff* I'm so jealous. I wish morels grew around here. Good lord, you'd make about $1300 dollars at that price! How long did it take you to pick them all?

Have any of you ever seen organic mushrooms packaged up in these silly containers for such a large price? I wonder how much the cultivator is making? Geeze, I couldn't believe what I was seeing!

Those little evil containers are a very sharp double edged sword. Bulk cultivated exotic mushrooms are a hard sell at $8-16/lb. Only grocery stores with lots of rich customers sell lots bulk mushrooms. At the majority of grocery stores it is easier to sell a product around $2.99. Most of the produce is packaged this way; two broccoli heads for $2.50, a 5lb bag of potatoes for $3.99, or a bag of carrots for 3.49. If you pay attention in the produce department you will realize very few of those price tags say price per lb, unless you look at the fine print.
The other sharp edge is that those stupid packages raise the cost of goods sold by a large percentage. For me, those packages cost around 25cents each. The two or three labels that are required cost an additional nickel to ten cents. The half pound of mushrooms that I put inside of it costs around 50-75cents max without accounting for overhead and labor.
The company that grew the mushrooms in the grocery store probably got around 20-30% of the retail price.

I was thinking about this yesterday while I was hiking through the everglades. The dried mushrooms really represent only about 8% of the fresh weight of the mushrooms. So the one pound that is selling for $106, is really closer to about 12 pounds of fresh mushrooms. So really the mushrooms are about $8.50 a pound (fresh price). Hopefully that assessment makes the $100/lb mushroom price a bit more palatable. When buying in bulk, I've bought a pound of Maiitake for about $50 (wild harvested in Maine). Light and Love, JD

around here, I usually sell fresh, but something like dried morals atleast around here go for 15$ minimum an ounce and high as 19.99$. Especially during the winter, people pay such prices. They are more then porcini's or even black trumpets. Personally I'm not that big of a fan of moral's to pay such prices, and usually have my own stash of moral's from the season.

o lame, you need a 100 post's to enter the gathering forum.
'Several of us were talking on IRC, and we'd like to have a campout in Wisconsin on the weekend of May 16th. The Muscoda Morel festival is that weekend, and we would probably (definitely) be doing some morel hunting. Now, I'm not from Wisconsin, but I am partnering up with my buddy snoot, who will undoubtedly find us an awesome camping spot. There probably won't be any free lodging for people the night before or after the campout, so if you plan on coming in from far away, you will need to arrange for a motel room or something yourself.
I'm handling the logistics of contacting people with info while snoot is finding us the spot. So if you plan on coming, please reply to this post by adding yourself to "the list".

The local Italian deli here in southern Wisconsin sells them for around $80 a dried pound last time I looked. They are packaged by the deli just in a big plastic tube-bag with melted ends. The mushrooms themselves are all whole and undamaged and I believe are of the 'black' variety
They also have dried chanterelles and porcini

Do you live in a place where people eat? Go to the finer restaurants around your area and they will buy them up! I used to buy wet morels for 36 bucks per pound. Not sure what you would charge for dried, go barter with your local chefs.
