Importuna from mycelium emporium.  What should I do for bulk stone culturing?  Supplemented sawdust or something else?

I’d let that jar mature first it should turn yellow to orange when ready

For bulk you will need to experiment but I’ve found it’s important to include starch and dextrose in your bulk if it’s sawdust

So you can supplement with wheat flour, brf, or potato starch then just add 2% karo by weight

Gonna clone some morels in the next few days. What agar recipe is everyone using? I was just gonna add some sticks from the area to a regular lma batch

A wee bit of nitrogen....

coffee (brewed or spent not fresh)

A pinch of nutritional yeast.

Pda over (L)mea


Some ppl make soil extract agar, by boiling/filtering soil (more carbon vs nitrogen based)

All four of the morel strains I've played around with have grown very fast and well on plain LMA.

I’ve done side by side pdya vs LME and pdya makes a lot of stones LME doesn’t

Also it has been extensively studied by multiple professionals in the field PDYA is the optimal agar medium of choice for morels

LME will work if you just want to expand mycelium and aren’t trying to observe sclerotia production invitro which can be useful for finding a viable strain to fruit but probably not necessary

It could also be strain dependent some are just heavy stone producers regardless of media

Very interesting, thank you!

What recipe would you recommend?  And what do you use for yeast?  I have nutritional yeast in my kitchen, but it is large-flake and heterogeneous in color, so maybe not ideal for nice looking, consistently performing plates.

I would either buy a premix or at the very least buy real yeast extract because I’ve found nutritional yeast doesn’t compare

Now I am working on a cheap DIY yeast extract by using a crock pot, vinegar, and nutritional or brewers yeast

Basically autolysis will digest the brewers yeast cells and convert it into yeast extract, this same process can possibly be used to make at home peptone as well !

Optionally you can experiment with substituting the yeast extract with peptone if you have that on hand

Like 7suns said they'll be fine on Mea, and maybe even preferable depending on your goals. 

Just for expanding mycelium, it  will work great.

My local clone of tulip morel is very interesting the mycelium starts out like regular morels

Thin and branched but quickly becoming floccose and tomentose at older pre established inoculation points at first I thought it was a secondary contamination but i discovered that older floccose mycelium is starting to make micro sclerotia indicative that it is a morphological expression of maturity !!

The thing that makes this intriguing is that as it mature it completely envelops the grain like a traditional fungi making cultivation more synonymous to traditional grain spawn methods
