This after 1 week


Scored a different rufobrunnea strain from bambus and it’s a much heavier stone producer so I’ll be doing some trial runs with it next

Just spawned 10 Lbs of importuna oat spawn to a weird substrate mixture

Call me crazy idc lmao but I mixed verm, perlite, karo syrup, calcium nitrate, gypsum, and cat litter to make a weird substrate that is the opposite of what is suggested lmao because fuck it :shrug:

I used grain spawn instead of sclerotia but there were some pretty big sclerotia, I tossed those in too

And i believe it’s a 1:1 ratio, so I’m thinking the speed of the morels mycelium and the high spawn ratio will completely over run the substrate before anything else can

Buy if it doesn’t who cares lmao at this point I’m just throwing anything at it

Also ….. I didn’t pasteurize or sterilize anything :rofl2:

I do expect contamination but I don’t think that will be game over for these trays


Then the fun part starts if they make it past this FAFO part

Yea shits crazy they fully colonized the unheated karo soil substrate in 2 days lmao :rofl2:

There’s morel mycelium all over everything with  the thicker fuzzy patches being were the sclerotia are mixed in

FAFO tek lmao

I’m probably gonna send them to the cold chamber tonight or this weekend depending on where ever my ADHD takes me with it lol

The morel mycelium is starting to darken and mature around the sclerotia

So stoked, found my first morels today! They were literally growing from the crack on the walkway in my back yard!
Morels don’t grow here from what I understand, the soil is to acidic being a glacial sand pile… (and I’ve been salty AF about that for years)

So, what’s the best way to clone?
Does the classic inner tissue work well on the hollow fruits?
Or should I go a bit more in depth?
I’ve seen (Chronicr) talk about rinsing whole fruits in a diluted bleach solution…
I do want to eat these tho ..



Also, Should I go PDA or LMEA? I have both on hand.

Having some cryo vials at the ready I did exactly that, and put a few pieces in some others for storage in case I want to try again down the line.

Made 4 clone plates total , 2 for each fruit, 1 pda 1 lmea each.

Yeah, if I had previous experience I probably would have said the same. I ended up shaving some slices off the inside rather than taking chunks like with psilocybe. One of the tops was compromised (from my gate hitting it) and the inner cavity was exposed.
Better to to take a few extra steps in an attempt to safeguard my endeavors. Also, having a trick like washing with sterile water is good to have up my sleeve, I plan on cloning as many wild fruits as I can for various projects.

No i think you are missing what I’m saying here, morels are one of the only species that actually grows faster than mold or bacteria, so it’s practically impossible to mess it up, also washing it is actually doing more harm because now you just spread bacteria all over every surface that got dipped

If you are absolutely hell bent on dodging contamination, there are much better ways that actually work, not this stab in the dark hope for the best method, now i know that sounds a little harsh and im not trying to rub anyone the wrong way but if you feel it’s absolutely necessary to worry about contamination with this species then I would highly recommend looking into

Agar sandwich (hot pouring method)

Cabin or castle sequestering

Antibiotic agar (I have a simple over the counter recipe if you need help)

These are much better options, I work extensively with wild clones especially chanterelles which are bacterial laden inside and out of their entirety with endogenous soil bacteria

But in all seriousness I’m honestly okay with few stabs in the dark. Sometimes you gotta fuck around and find out.

I do have a few of those tricks under my belt to deal with contam so no worries if I need to try something else.

I very much appreciate your willingness to help out.
Definitely curious about your antibiotic agar recipe.

I’ll post here with updates but so far so good. Things are starting to get fuzzy 😁

Post pics of your plates hopefully we can help you identify the correct mycelium? Typical characteristics of morel mycelium is fast growing, thin and branching, clear to white are the leading edge, aging brown to orange at the older mycelium, older mycelium also presents sclerotia (stones) and is thinner as it dies back

Not all morels behave this way this is mostly blacks, rufobrunnea, and some blondes

Here’s some pictures of my most recent work, I’ve just cloned morchella Virginiana or possibly diminutiva but I’m leaning towards the first one






And no worries brother, I’m not trying to over step my bounds so again my apologies if it came across that way, i think I can see both sides now where people are trying to be “too helpful” and shut people down for experimenting and then you have the people who don’t care if it fails because for them it’s about the journey not the destination

At the moment it’s just the tissue getting a little fuzzy but in a few days once it finds the agar and starts to take hold I’m sure I’ll be in a better spot to post pics

So far so good.
One plate clean, one overtly dirty, one may have a tiny spec of bacteria and the last is being a slowpoke and hasn’t done much.
Seems no difference yet between the pda or lmea.
