Soap and water will FUCK UP some cell walls, plus it washes away things that survived anyway.  That's why you see surgeons SCRUBBING THE SHIT out of their hands and arms with soap and water pre-surgery, and not immersing them in iodine and alcohol.

What up TCs??? My search engine skills are lagging behind tonight, and I seek guidance on using grain water for agar. My searches brought up less than helpful results, and I know I have seen this discussed around here.

So the grain water I have is from a 90 min sous vide run, 150F, rye in a brew bag, 90min. The water is light and golden, with practically no sediment. Once it cooled, I decanted about 5-ish cups into a plastic container and stuck it in the fridge.

I remember seeing a 1:1 GW:H2O ratio. Would that be the same for my grain water? I feel like it might be a little lighter in the nutrient department, due to the reduced time.

Any tips or advice? Should I say fuck it and just dive in?

Should I put a drop or two of Karo?

nah ive seen pretty nice grain water plates. not sure on the recipe but 1:1 kinda feels right. id go 2% agar and see how she goes!  i would definately filter it before you add the agar but thats just me i like clean plates.

People use agar wothout nutrients from time to time. Full strength grain water might make your cultures a little lazy, but itll still work.

Cool, I don't want them to be too nutritious, just checking out a new agar trick. And I carefully decanted it after settling, it's nice and clear. Probably hopefully better than my PDA plates ever were.

First grow, this one little guy was looking different then others, I knocked him over with my hygrometer. Has white fuzz and brown stain on stem, is the contam? Should I toss it?

It’s fine just dehydrate it. That white fuzz is just mycelium which is normal to have near the base of the shrooms sometimes.


A little more airflow usually takes care of the bacterial splotch

Ya I didn't reply cuz I didn't really know if I wanted to suggest eating or not but I've a dehydrated and ate both psuedomonas and vert fruits myself

Good day TC denizens. I'm getting close to another grow and had a question regarding water. Maybe I'm over thinking it but that's why I'm here.

Basically my home has a whole house water softener and it uses salt. To put it bluntly it'd be incredibly impractical to bypass so for all my previous grows I was basically using lightly salted water which I've come to learn isn't exactly best for growing. I've had to buy distilled water for my agar. Would it be reasonable to just get a water distiller and use that to hydrate my coir going forward? Maybe I'm being ocd, I'm probably missing out on some potential trace minerals but short of buying spring water constantly this is my dilemma. Thank you for your time.
