What makes you think that?

5.56 have reasonably high ballistic coefficient (they're pointy) a pretty small diameter and an ear is thin, offering little resistance such that very little energy transfer would take place.  Even if the shooter used expanding ammunition it would not have expanded from hitting an ear.

It’s possible it would just make one small little hole and go straight through but like you said it’s really thin. I feel like when you try and shoot paper it tears it in a really bad unpredictable way. I feel like an ear would be a bit similar. There would probably be a little left on there but most would’ve been almost obliterated.

This is all theoretical, of course. I’m not experienced trying to shoot ears.

Ears are much tougher and more elastic than paper.

Also, I've shot plenty of paper with my AR when I had one.  It put nice, neat holes through the paper

AR puts nice neat holes in 1/4" steel plate. Like drilled quality of holes.

I had a 3/8 AR500 target and it stopped green tips but yeah, the divots were perfectly round

I haven’t been tagging enough ears with AR 15 rifle shells to make a really good comparison.

I feel like he would not want people to ever see his ear again if it had been directly hit with one of those bullets.

I bet he takes off that Band-Aid in the next couple months and his ear just has a little scar on it.
