That’s an interesting filter unit you got there

I know, i know. Not at all what is recommended around here.

Selfmade as per gordo tek but with smaller vent. I have had not any contams since i'm using this compared to my SAB (around 50 plates)

If i'm still in the hobby in 6 months from now, i'm gonna invest in a proper flowhood 😉

Just make a still air box.  What you have there is not an effective filter and just as likely to contaminate your work as not.  It is also too small to cover the work area you need, that looks like it's 12" x 12".

But seriously, just make a still air box for like $6.99 and it will be actual clean work.

Just make a still air box.

If he uses it and gets no contam I don't see why he'd switch back to a SAB honestly. I'd take any flowhood (well, large enough for my increasingly large workload) over a SAB any frikkin day if it works.

If it works is the operative word. It seems like he’s been using that so maybe it does 🤷‍♂️

As i have already said. I know, its not ideal. And yes, i DO have a SAB, and no, i dont switch back as i had more contam compared to this setup.

I'm lucky that i live in very clean environment, so this surely helps as well...

Just wanted to share this. First grow, Natal in a 27qt tub. thanks for the support to get me this far.

This is a nice tub, great clusters. I don’t think it’s natalensis though it looks like a cube to me.

It’s really good especially for a first tub, might be near canopy once those pins fill out.

thanks, i didnt think it looks like Nats, but i was hoping. here is a picture of the gills, it's not a great pic, but they kind of look like nat gills.

I've been doing 100% open air work with agar recently with 0 contamination from the environment. He could have been successful simply because it's very easy to get away with less than ideal environmental conditions.

This would be like saying: I safely drove home drunk, therefore driving drunk is safe. Even if you manage to get away with driving drunk 100 times it doesn't change the reality that drinking and driving is reckless behavior.

Correlation ≠ causation.

You may reasonably expect a man to walk a tightrope safely for ten minutes; it would be unreasonable to do so without accident for two hundred years.

The only way to know you're doing clean work is to do clean work using proven methods.  That way if something starts to go wrong, you have fewer variable to narrow down to fix the problem. At least, that's my thinking.

That's a fair point. I've also had my share of success with open air stuff at some point. In either case if he is really concerned about whether his flowhood works or not, there are methods to test it out. Down to grabbing one of those particle detector devices if he's really after it.
Besides I believe that the air would be moving around enough to stir shit up in front of an unclean/turbulent hood to contam anyway.

I'm only saying that if his flowhood is indeed functioning as intended, then I see no reason to go back to a cramped SAB.

Love your youtube channel by the way. I can actually introduce my friends to myco easier thanks to it.

Totally reasonable thinking as well. I see where you're both going with it. As a new grower you want to perfect your technique in a SAB so you know what you're doing when you do the switch.
Mastering the craft instead of letting the tools do it for you.

Looks like nat gills to me too. They can look very similar to cubes, they're very close taxonomically speaking. Also... It's unclear whether you meant P. Cubensis var natal or actual P. Natalensis. I'd be careful with the term you pick, they were often confused together

Apologies for the long post.

thank you for the replay! I was talking about P. Natalensis. I thought they look like the go down the stipe a little, but being a noob i have no confidence.

I'm not going anywhere with it, there is nothing to read into.  It is a face value statement.  It's not training for a future method, it is in and of itself a proven clean work method.  Even experienced people need to reduce variables so when things go wrong they can quickly assess why.  The current method he is using is some youtube malarkey and will probably result in problems down the road.  If he thinks the method he is using is clean, he is not likely to consider it in why he is getting contamination (when it happens)

All of this can be prevented by spending $6.99 on a clear sterilite tub and being sure that it is a failure in technique and not because of equipment.

It's just my way of processing things in my mind that makes me talk this way. What I truly meant is that I understand what you are saying. I've edited my previous post to mention that mastering the craft is more important than having the tools master it for you. (which I'm not blaming you for missing).

Sorry if I was unclear in my response. English is not my first language, I still get hiccups sometimes. I agree with you on the vast majority of the idea even if my point of view might be a bit off yours. And I definitely appreciate the critical thinking.

I got and understood all your objections against my setup. I will consider further improvement in my equipment and not post anything about that again.

We can go back now to daily cultivation pics. ✌🏻

It's not so much an objection against your setup as them wanting you to git gud and consistent I believe. Which implies using other methods before you consider using that so you can prove your technique works reliably. Mostly I believe because you mentioned you still get contams in your SAB. No shortcuts, in very short synthesis.

You're right, we should let this go and get back to posting pics. We're all here for mushrooms after all.
