Hell yeah! Did my first transfers today too. These are natalensis and it seems aggressive. My other cups are cubes and they've barely germinated.

Some contaminants are hidden, and by using larger transfer pieces, you may well be transferring some of those contaminants.

A smaller piece narrows genetic variation - this can be both favoured and unfavoured, however, I will give an example: I believe it may be user Josex that mentioned this. In a method of his he uses a syringe and needle to extract a microscopic piece of tissue. He said that in doing this, he has consistently gotten canopies and a lack of variation in fruits (all tall vs some small, medium, large). Does that make sense?

Also, as a beginner, cutting across a larger surface area may mean you're not being so careful of your tool and hand placement.

And again, as a beginner, you do not yet have a trained eye so you may end up transferring unwanted nasties. If you get mostly myc in your small wedge, but a small part of a contaminant, there's a higher chance that the recovering plate will give you better luck of recovering the mycelium you want.

And finally, you will get more out of your mycelium / plates.
