What is the best way to clean up “scalloped mycelium?  Do I take a small piece from the flattest section?  Water agar?  Is the culture not salvageable?

This is a Ghost culture that seems to grow very quickly / well, and produces really nice fruits with good potency, so I’d like to see it remain viable over time.

I’ve cloned twice now and the plates are always a bit scalloped and flushes certainly could be more dense.  Spawn cleanliness is good, but not perfect - and I can’t seem to get perfect regardless of oat prep and ridiculously anal inoculation in front of an FFU.

Are you sure your FFU has laminar flow? It doesn't bend or flicker the flame differently between outside edges and center face? Incense stick smoke is also good at seeing this.

from Stipes in this thread

Thought to be a possible ride along contam that is very hard to clean up on plates and generally leads to poor preforming grows.

Edit: it has been touched on several times in this thread and others, but I don't think there has been anything conclusive other than that it generally indicates a poor fruiter.

Where do you get those slightly elevated racks for putting plates on top of inside the SAB or in front of the flow hood?

And what is the benefit of using them instead of putting the plates directly on the table?

3 tier cooling rack

3 side by side perfectly line the floor of my sab

All the fallen contamination particulates and spores and what not fall to the floor of the SAB, much more likely to suck in contam when lifting a lid working there

Try searching eBay et al for "cupboard rack" or "kitchen shelf" or "organiser shelf" something along those lines:

They're surprisingly hard to find in Europe and it isn't obvious what they're supposed to be used for. I didn't realise you can find them in dollar stores stateside.

You think? This is an example of what I’m talking about.
The spread from the transfer is typically very thin like this, and once it reaches the edge of the plate, it will thicken up over the next week or two.
I was attributing it to my agar formula

Looks like mold to me

I put a wedge from that plate to grain. Colonization took nearly 2 month's and wouldn't fruit. Scalloped edge persisted no matter the nmber of transfers.

and there is always the Josex style BRF plates

Totally did not think of a brf puck.  Thanks.

I tossed my last full plates to grain - they do ok after all - and started growing out a plin and another clone sample.  Both plates are only 2 days old.  If they too scallop, I’ll post a pict and try brf and water to see if either works.
