I tried charcoal. Didn’t care for it. I’m back to blue food coloring. I threw out a lot of plates and wasted a lot of time and spore samples because of how the charcoal worked for me.

Others seem to make it work.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well others, I'd love to see solid & consistent growth on a charcoal plate.

I personally haven't used it, and every single pic of charcoal plates I've seen looked at least somewhat sketchy. Hence my interest in seeing a good one.

Removing charcoal literally changed my agar game…I had no idea what I was doing wrong..I was trying everything..things would take forever to take off if ever..they stalled constantly…I couldn’t get a good piece of growth to transfer hardly and if I did it took 3 weeks and then i would transfer it only for it to not grow out all the way if at all sometimes…I practiced my sterile technique, I don’t have the most ideal setup so I thought that was it…then Rusty told me remove the charcoal you will thank me or something like that…I been thanking him ever since..my agar works now…I have clean plates to work with…the charcoal did make me get better with a sterile technique so once I removed it my agar really took off…now I’m doing things like pouring bubbles instead cus I’m still a noob but I have fully grown out clean plates..one person told me charcoal naturally inhibits growth and to use it at a smaller ratio but I had so much better results without it I don’t even want to use it at all anymore..honestly…it’s already in the trash at this point haha

The evolution of some scalloped plates that I've been toying with recently.

The culture originated from swab, sent to me from a discord member; swabbed Thrasher PE x Pearly gates:

3 transfers in and the growth persists, I allowed the left side which appeared less scalloped to grow out after being in the fridge for a while, this is the result:

The light reveals lot's of sub surface growth which resembles a halo, and the darkest mycelium is where it's the thickest which is preventing light penetration.

This area looks promising for transfer:

The thickened portion generates excess heat, the condensation on the lid above seems to suggest this anyways:

Not sure what's going on but it's pretty interesting to look at.

P9, that's very interesting to look at!

May I ask you a quick question? Several weeks ago in this thread, you told me that pre-boiling agar is 100% unnecessary, that it can cause problems, and that it's like bringing sand to a beach.

That was in a reply to me after I said I tried skipping it once and it didn't work for me. I did not clarify that I was using no-pour, and I would like to know if that changes anything in your view?

I've had many users in the past 2 days tell me they always pre-boil with no-pour. For the past several weeks, I have been heating until just before boil and then distributing it to each jar, then PCing. I want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Thank you!

Edit: FWIW, I have started doing some batches of poured agar, and will make the next round exactly as you described to me, that is add all ingredients to my media bottle and PC it without any prior cooking.

I only heat my agar to the preboiling point for my no pours but I beat tf outta it with a stick blender on high.

These tissue samples haven’t been transferred yet, but appear clean to my eye. Still going to put them on new plates to avoid putting the original material to grain.

When selecting mycelium to transfer and visible contams aren’t  in play - is the most rhizomorphic growth on the outer edge generally the best default choice? Bad pics, but the growth looks very circular/uniform overall.

First grow.  This is first transfers from spore syringe to agar germination.

Greetings Agar show-offs and other interesting people...

Here is a PE6 plate that is pinning as if ther is no tomorrow.
The culture I have goes... Rhizomorphic? Whenever it can, climbs the sides of the container. Even squeezes out past the lid of a cake.

I am watching the white/pale yellow tops. If they dont go brown, they are moving to their own plate.

And the best pic I could get with a phone of the threads...

Thanks to everyone who posts here... Looking at Agar never gets old.

I didn't realize you were running no pours, I have no experience with that so cannot comment.

All I know is that if I pre boil my agar/malt mix in a pot with the intention to decant to media bottles for pouring it sometimes results in weak gelling/soft plates that doesn't allow me to lift the wedge.

I fixed that issue by mixing my powder/water combo all in the vessel I entend to pour from, no more unpredictable gelling strength.

I do it exactly like this:

Just posted video example above, no decanting, just pouring.

Any time; yeah I wouldn't expect that mixing tiny amounts in each little cup would be very effective

No pour media definitely needs to be heated to dissolve the agar and nutes and mixed so it’s homogenized.  As long as it’s all dissolved no need to boil.  Boiling pour media before pc’ing is retarded.

 Yeah, that would suck. The one time I tried no-pours without any pre-heating of any kind, I constantly stirred the water and un-dissolved powders as I aspirated 17 mLs into a syringe, then added that to each jar. Visually, each jar had roughly the same amount of AA and ME powder, but since it was just a thin layer in each jar, the PCing did not mix everything up. I had a really hard layer on bottom, and a really soft layer on top.

After pitching those and resetting, I went back to pre-heating to dissolve everything, but tried to keep it from reaching a full boil.

I guess I have another thing to test!

Would you say it's safe to heat until it just starts to simmer while stirring slowly but constantly? That is what I have been doing for the past few batches I've made.

Thanks again everyone!
