Cleaning up my lab and I came across some t1 plates of APE-R. Are these blobs on my plate? I was going to toss them but I might want to come the blobs for shits and giggles. Black fuzzy string is from my shirt after wiping the plate on it, it's on the outside.

anyone have any idea why cultures split like this? i’ve been getting it in a few plates recently & have failed to find any info on it by searching around here

You can search this thread for "pizza" to see some discussion on similar issues. I believe that many say it is meshed in mold. Here is one such conversation:

Maybe unpopular opinion but "meshed in mold" isn't a thing. :shrug:

People will even try to tell you that's trich which it is certainly absolutely 100% not trich.

Molds will run through or between other types of mycelium for sure but you can see them if you look up close with even a 40x mag. I've never seen mold cause that pizza effect and have seen that lots of times. What I have seen is the pizza slices are often still colonized it's just beneath the surface of the agar. Often times those wispy slices are the first to knot and pin in the dish.... :wink:

was just about to ask for your direct opinion after searching this thread, thanks for being so timely nichrome (; im currently making agar so i think i’ll do a few water agar plates to transfer to just to see if anything clears up, but from your prior posts on the topic im feeling a bit more at ease with it. with so much agar porn on here any plate that’s less than a perfect, rhizomorphic uniform circle has me sketched out lol.

I had a couple plates that split like that. I was told it was mold that was mixed in. I couldn't understand how since they were transfers from a clean clone plate that did it. I just chalked it up to sectoring and went with the good looking myc.
As for the search for "pizza" who the hell would ever think of putting that in the search? I think that's why people have a hard time finding things with the search. I think better wording things would stop a lot of easily answered questions.

i tried “split” & “scalloping” to pretty much no avail, sans one old ass post where bod & electrictiger mentioned it’s pretty normal to have weird splits, but it was nothing as aggressive as the splitting i was getting on my plates. i had seen discussion on it in past threads but could not for the life of me get them to come up with search results

My mazatapec was giving me wedges. Not missing wedges, little wedges and then mostly negative space.

Cube myc be wildin sometimes.

I second that. If you buy less than 500 at a time you’re throwing money in the trash. And you’ll go through 500 plates.
