Transporeter: It does matter.

You probably shouldn't give advice when you don't know, at least here.

It's OK to not comment. We are protective about this on here, calling that out is how we keep misinformation from spreading on here. It's part of why Shroomery is better than Reddit for grow advice. Any old b.s. is OK on Reddit.

If you have a culture in a plate that's not a clone, and you clone a plin (plate pin), you have a clone. That's how I got my strongest culture.

Your mileage may vary, but at least you'll get a grow that is  consistent in strength, and in when it fruits. Shrooms grown from spores aren't as consistent as clones. Clones are generally the goal here.

If you wait for a plin, and cut that without pulling any of the mycelium below it, and it hasn't dropped spores yet, cut it off with a flame-sterilized scalpel a tiny bit above the plate, that's the easiest way to clone.

And will likely be clean if your plate is clean.

Sometimes cloning a larger shroom grown in the open air will introduce contams. Though you can minimize the chance by cloning from inside the stipe or inside the cap.

Don't wait for plins to get too big, they'll drop spores. If that happens anywhere on the plate and you clone a pin, you're not sure it's a clone. What you grow might be starting over from spores, or have some of that.

Pick the best looking plins to transfer, either biggest (without dropping spores) or fattest, or fastest growing, or the first to appear. They don't have to "get bigger to cut down colonization time" though.

Welcome both of you.
and Grind365, where do you get those little Petri plates? how many cm across?  I want some.

They are 60mmx15mm celtreat. They work well if you aren't working on a wire rack. Since they are smaller they tip over a lot easier than 100mm. They also only come in sleeves of 10 which while some may be annoyed by this, I prefer this way over sleeves of 20 and 25.

Sorry day one stuff there. I'll keep it a hundred from now on. Best regards

PS I want some of those petri dishes too. I heard some people use the glass ones, but i've heard they might be more trouble than they're worth $ wise. What can I use other than a plastic petri dish other than a glad mini-round? (I do no-pour agar with those)

glass Petris suck. I got two different kinds and they don't fit tight, or fit too tight and get stuck and they break easily. Plastic disposable are so much better. And you have to heat your stove high for an hour to sterilize the glass ones each time, so you don't really save money.

Here's the "Pasty Plate" tek, using condiment cups:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976

Problem with them is it's hard to see what's going on well inside. Petris are made for that. Easier to spot contam. Also easier to transfer from Petris since they're wider and more shallow than the condiment cups. But the cups work if you can't afford Petris. A lot of people here start with them, some use the always.

Here are the cheap one-use sterile petris I get. Will be 90 mm not 100 mmm but are like 110 dollars with shipping for 500 in the USA.
https://www.southernlabware.com/petri-dish-polystyrene-90-x-15mm-sterile-500-cs.html

They come in sleeves of 10, which is much better than 20. Less chance to have leftover plates or agar mix. Just pour the last few thinner or thicker and it all works out.

Thanks for that link on the 90mm plates, that's a good deal. The 25 stacks of 100mm plates I'm running now make it a pain in the ass to re-sleeve them after pouring.

Those 60mm plates are pretty awesome too. Never seen them before, they look handy for sure.

Lol, yeah I know but I thought it sounded better when I made it, I was fairly inebriated when I posted it. Took the pic in my yard, they're my guard dogs of my outdoor beds.

Noob agar question [Re: Tormato]
    #27935202 -

So i'm still noobish to agar. Used with home brewing to slant yeast, but i've only been experimenting with plates, spores and transfers for the past 3 months. this is the first plate i've seen of mine to produce rhizomatic growth. The only thing that's ever touched this plate is 4 drops of Mazatapec from a MS syringe about 2 weeks ago.

Question: where should i take my transfer from on this growth? I'm assuming that once i transfer, it will take 2-3 more transfers to get it clean. but i'd like to try and isolate those ropes.

all input and help appreciated.

Yeah, grabbing some of the ropey area may be good..

My guess is that you used charcoal and not food coloring,, right? I had a ton of funky plates that looked like that until I stopped using charcoal.. and when I transferred to non charcoal plates they grew out looking healthy... my advice would be to ditch the charcoal.. my guess I that transferring anything from that plate to a plate without charcoal will give you much better looking growth

Also.. please dont change the subject line.. one person does it and then it stays changed until someone notices an switches it back

Wow, those are some healthy looking plins. Mine always look small/scraggly.  What were your nutes and ratios?

Does this look like tomentose growth or enmeshed mold?

Just a T1 from streak plate, so I’m not sure if it’s dirty or just irregular.

Awesome. Just did a bunch of transfers. I have a few plates that are clean and symmetrical. Just gotta decide what I’d like to do with them now. Things are coming along.

Congrats on the plins Bismillah, I'm leaving a couple plates to attempt to get plins myself.

I'm curious, the plates I'm letting sit to develope plins are all clean germ plates with multiple myc colonies growing. Can clean germ plates produce plins as well as transfer plates?

I have RustyWhyte, B+ and Ovoid plates set aside to hopefully get plins from.

I used dog food agar. I forget the ratio, have to check my notebook. The dog food is called Specific Allergy Management Plus. The plates are sitting on a bookshelf near a window. They get sunlight (filtered through a tree outside the window) for an hour or two in the morning.
