Dog food agar 4

This is my absolute favorite agar recipe and I thought I’d share. If you have dogs, you have the ingredients you need, without making a special trip to the brewing supply stor for (or ordering online) malt extract.
This recipe produces lush mycelium and quick growth. Here’s my quick and dirty recipe.
Supplies:
Agar powder. Dog food powder (I use Nature’s Domain grain free from Costco). Digital scale. Food coloring (optional, helpful for spotting bacteria). Media vessel or prepared no-pour containers. I use a 500ml Pyrex vinegar cruet from World Market
This recipe yields 500ml of agar.

Measure out 10 grams of dog food powder and 10 grams of agar powder and place in small saucepan.

Add 500ml cold water and a squeeze of food coloring. Turn on heat and stir.

On medium high heat, stir constantly until mixture just begins to simmer.

Transfer contents of saucepan into media vessel or no-pour containers.

Sterilize — I do 45 minutes at 20psi. Once your sterilization cycle is complete, pour your plates (or remove your no-pour plates from PC) and inoculate.

Less than 48 hours later, we have full recovery and decent growth.

I think the mycelium likes the more complex nutrient profile in the dog food. Malt extract is great, but it’s never performed for me as well as dog food agar. I hope this write-up will convince some of you to give it a try!

I'm convinced. Wouldn't be the weirdest agar recipe I try. Tried horse manure agar with great success for Pans, it would be interesting to try horse manure/dog food agar.

Hey, we put horse manure tea in grains, might be interesting to add to agar. Gotta be careful to not get too much nitrogen into the agar though. I think the animal products from the dog food add some nitrogen to the mix, as opposed to just sugar and starch from common agar nutrients.

Malt/grain is full of plenty of nitrogen as is. Often called free amino nitrogen because of yeast+grains use in distilling and brewing

I didn’t know that about malt extract. I mean I know it’s made from germinated grains but that’s it. I guess it’s about more than the nitrogen. The analysis on the bag of dog food is pretty elaborate.

It’s grain free, but it’s got potatoes, fruit, and legumes in it, as well as meat and minerals. I also think it’s interesting that it’s fermented. I’ll admit that the first time I saw that it contains probiotics I was worried that there might be some endospores that survive the sterilization cycle, but it’s always worked beautifully for me.

Post a pic of the ingredients. It will probably work just fine. I think it just happened to be dog food that Stamets used and put in his books.

I figured as much but thanks for confirming. I just have dogs so I’ve only ever used dog food.
I also want to reiterate how fast the recovery times are with this stuff. Transfers I took this morning are already getting fuzzy, and I already have leap off on the 2 grain jars I dropped wedges into less than 24 hours ago. At first I thought it was just the culture, but I’ve got this same fast recovery on 3 different cube varieties, so I do think this is exceptional mushroom food.

I agree. I do like to mix up my media to help ward off senescence, so I switch between golden light malt extract and dog food, but dog food agar always makes the lushest, most pic worthy plates.

FAA, (Farm Animal Agar) unless your cow is a pet
I’m sure it would work fine!

It would be nice to have a pet that doesn't bark and produces manure.
