Anyone got a ratio of water to coir when using the Brunnings "Premium Grade Coir-Peat Brick".

I've got it dialled in when using a certain amount of vermiculite, but want to drop the vermiculite and use straight coir for bulk substrate.

Never really measured it. Just add water a little at a time. Make the coco wet but not soggy.

I do the same thing!

I boil the jug and use hot water

Pretty sure it tells you on the packaging the ratio, but still just add till your happy!

I weighed out 220g of the coir to 1l of water and the result looks pretty good.

Although I don't know why I got this mutant.

For the new guys I can't stress enough using agar and making pasty plates. It's actually heaps easy compared to spores and you won't have to mess about with heaps of gear.

Would be nice to source an Australian-based vendor that offers more than cubes.

You should be able to get tampanensis or ATL7. There's also plenty of paneolus (blue meanie) out there this time of year you just need to find them. Same deal for subs you will likely get given a spore print in winter from a friendly victorian member or friend.

What are all you fellas using for coir?

https://www.bunnings.com.au/search/products?q=coir&sort=BoostOrder&page=1

Which product from the ole bunnos?

All these yanks talk about bricks that they drop in. I have one of the 90L ones and I literally saw it with a knife, it makes a hell of a mess.

Also... is that the going rate for medicinal plates... thats insane....

Be like fungus, my friend.
Empty your mind.
Be formless, shapeless, like mycelium.
You put mycelium into a jar of broth, the mycelium becomes the liquid.
You put liquid culture into a bag of grain, it becomes the grain.
You put mycelium covered grain into some coir, it becomes the coir.
Be mycelium. -Mr hyde

Hi everyone,

I am new to this and never grown before. I have bought a syringe of the spores I want to grow but otherwise I have no idea where to start. There is lots of information and I am not sure which stuff is relevant. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction to get started? Also will the syringe of spores expire?

Get the Let's Grow Mushrooms videos by Marc R Keith. That'll make life a lot easier for you.

Keep the spore syringes in the fridge and in a spot where they won't accidentally freeze. They'll last for a very long time.

Bunnings was selling small bricks of Brunnings coir until recently but now you have to buy bigger blocks which is a pain in the arse. I'll have to get coir bricks from other places now. Coles, Woolworths and Big W stock them according to my Google searches.

Any recommendations for Pressure Cookers? I would love a 23 litre one or something similar. Pretty $$$ tho.

Maybe buying a couple of cheap electrical ones will do the job?

A Presto pressure cooker if you want to save money. An All American if you want a quality pressure cooker that will outlive you and which doesn't have rubber seals that need replacing.

Only thing I can't find these days is Karo. No one seems to stock it anymore. Ebay seems the only option.

Awesome thread!

You can invert plain old white table sugar and use it.  It's easy;

2 cups sugar
1 cup water
2 teaspoons lemon juice
put in a saucepan, bring to boil, then reduce heat to low simmer for 30 minutes, stirring regularly.  Add 1/2 cup water at the end to thin it out, I did not and you can see in the pics, it is quite thick.

Asian shops are good for finding corn syrup (for liquid cultures). Check in the Korean aisle because Koreans seem to like using it.

I've heard mixed reports on the Brunnings cocopeat bricks (9L)..some people have said their tubs get contaminated using them sometimes

Is everyone doing good using them with the boiling water in the bucket method of pasteurization?

Always open to hear of any other coco coir products you swear by

Thanks

What are you other Aussies using for shoeboxes? Went for a look around today and thought I'd ask in here. Also anyone use say 15Lt tubs so that they can completely fruit in the tub? I want to try fully self contained tubs, dubtubs seem like a waste of a perfectly good tub to me.

I'm not an aussie but I fruit in 15qt tubs which is 14.1 liter so just about that same size and I fruit completely in that tub. It's just about perfect. I've had a few really tall guys hit the lid but not many.
