I have oyster and b+ going and I’m seeing the exact same thing as you are. I think it’s due to too much nutrition. I put in a lot of potato flakes in this last mix.

Only other thing I’m thinking is maybe temp. My temps are in the high 60’s so everything is going pretty slow. I see the clear edge grow everyday, and then it fills in white a day or two later.

I used 16g of malt extract in 1000ml of water :shrug: hopefully it starts filling in soon though. The T1s looked incredible so I really want to see these things before I have to take more transfers!

Yeah man let that sit and see what happens. I've touched my scalpel tip in a spot when trying to get the cotton off and spores germinated in that spot.

Anyone got tips on taking good photos of holy grail plates? It looks great irl but photos are hard to see. I tried backlighting and it washes out real bad

There's no easy way of taking photos of pp stuff I'm learning.

Black surface, angles, and playing with lighting from above.
Or sometimes just bright direct sunlight like out a window
I mean they start clearish.

Alright boys, been a few years since I've messed around with any shrooms. A friend sent me some of his extra GT spore syringe, so I bought a some agar equipment and poured 25 plates yesterday. inoculated 6 and put the rest in the fridge upside down.

Starting my experiments with PDA today. Heard mixed things but want to try it myself. Anyone got a solid recipe?

With petri dish lids, what is good sterile technique when working in an SAB?

My process looks like this

  • Flame scalpel
  • Lift lid of donor petri dish + hold lid above dish with left hand
  • Cut a wedge with right hand
  • Place lid back on petri
  • Flame scalpel
  • Lift lid of donor petri dish + hold lid above dish with left hand
  • Stab the wedge with right hand
  • Place lid back on petri
  • Lift lid of receiving petri dish + hold lid above dish with left hand
  • Place wedge on receiving dish with right hand
  • Place lid back on petri


The process is somewhat frustrating because it is not easy to cut a wedge using one hand while holding the petri lid with the other hand.

Would it be risky to place the lid down somewhere in the SAB and hold the dish with one and and cut a wedge with the other hand?

Where could I place the lid and should it be face up or face down?

I've experimented with it using a recipe from reddit which was

500ml water
10 grams agar
10 grams potato powder/flakes
10 grams honey


Please do not use this recipe.

You don't need much potato powder/flakes in the agar.

You don't need the honey either, just agar and potato dextrose is fine.

Use the petri lid to hold the petri while cutting, replace the lid once cut and move the transfer to the new dish using the lid from the new dish to hold down the receiving dish again.
Only open the dish enough to pass the transfer through.
