So here's a stupid question. I left my last batch a little too long before pouring so I have a few chunky plates. Can I pop those bad boys in the microwave to melt them or is that really dumb?

Either the microwave or put them in a pot on the stove. Both methods work great. I'll usually make 1500-2000ml of agar at a time and store 500-1000ml in the fridge til I need to use it.

Ah, no it was plenty clear I just hadn't had my redbull yet this morning..Now that I understand your question I don't think I'm qualified to answer lol. I would probably just use them as is myself. Putting unsealed, sterile plates in the microwave seems risky :shrug:

Won't you melt yer plates, PP? Agar to melt is like 200 F. I think...

I just use the plates when clumps pour out. It looks a little distracting is all.
I figure I'll learn my lesson sometime, to keep above 115 F.  :shrug:

Microwaving is nasty shit, at least for my micro, it blast up to boiling and I have
seconds to respond. Then it's not entirely melted and we go again, and again!
Kills my back hunching for the agar!

Next time I reheat leftover agar, I'm using a pot of water and give it some time.
Then to cool back down quickly, a pot of 130F water and watch it from there.

I use my chunky plates for germ plates. My last batch I let sit for too long. I've got like 4 chunky plates left and already have over 20 cultures going already. I don't know if I wanna streak anything else. I have been thinking about running some PESA and Blue meanie a nice member sent me in the mail. I just put some Trinity and Albino Louisiana on plates. Anybody know anything about either of those?

Hello again.



So I'm new to this and was wondering why this kind of growth happens?



The furry stuff just grew up from the agar wedge and out to the lid, then kinda marshmallow manned the agar, like in Ghostbusters.


I think the 'halo' around it implies it's bacterial?

These are from a spore print scraped on a dish,



so did I grab the wrong kind of stuff off that original plate? I kinda went for the whitest most aggressive bits. :wow:

I let a couple of PEs grow out in thick poured holy grails. Got a relatively big tiny dick and I really like the Hans Giger xenomorph vibe in the other one.

Hoping for a face hugger.

What's a solid amount of time to leave un-inoculated agar plates wrapped in parafilm after pouring to check for contams?

Want to gift some to a friend but don't want him starting out with contam plates and not 100% on my technique just yet. 2 weeks? 3 weeks?

I think 2 weeks should be plenty.
Bacteria seems to show up within a few days and molds show within about a week max

Seems like it. I've never seen this before, but unfortunately I had to throw that Agar away to reuse the dish. Would be a nice signature pic if fully grown out
