The firing of that carrier captain because it leaked there was an outbreak on the ship did not sit well with sailors, and the attempt to soothe them went over even worse? Remember the leaked audio of the Secretary of the Navy addressing the crew?



My favorite part is when he calls the captain stupid for not considering the internal email he sent could be leaked to the press, in an address that was leaked to the press. More than anything, the trump administration are just bumbling idiots.

The piece is currently titled  "Trump puts pressure on FDA for coronavirus silver bullet ahead of Election Day" but has no examples of Trump pressuring FDA to do anything, apart from a general encouragement to progress swiftly, which a good leader would be remiss not to voice. And then this beauty:

"Some health experts fear that leaves open the possibility the White House will pressure Hahn and Health and Human Services secretary Alex Azar to approve use of a vaccine before Election Day."

So we have another CNN hit piece devoid of evidence in support of the headline and which, just like so much of the Fake News, is based on unnamed sources, mind reading and speculation about what Trump might do, rather than what he is doing or has done.

There’s a scientific process. The vaccines aren’t even being developed by government agencies, so what exactly does encouragement to progress swiftly mean? He’s pressuring regulators to bend the rules for political gain.

You know people aren’t going to trust a vaccine that is approved a week before the election. Even if it did somehow happen that a vaccine approval legitimately happens then, people are not going to believe it. Would you? If trump truly had the country’s well being at heart, and that situation arose, he should wait until after the election so the vaccine isn’t politicized. We know that won’t happen.

If we approve a vaccine that ends up not working, it’s going to be an absolutely devastating blow to public health, but trump announcing approval of a vaccine that is actually effective right before the election is going to cause a lot of unnecessary skepticism.

If Trump did not talk about the need to get the vaccine quickly CNN would bag him for not caring about American lives. It is the role of a leader to let the team know the long game plan but not interfere in their work and the piece has no examples of Trump "pressuring" FDA to do anything.

There has been scepticism about vaccines in general for decades so can't see how this one would be different, regardless of the timing.

It can be approved without making an announcement. That wouldn’t change anything. He could let medical professionals make the announcement, instead of trying to take credit for something he had absolutely nothing to do with.

Anyways it will be easy to tell. My father had a device approved by the FDA. His company wasn’t shy about detailing their efforts. If a company has data to support their vaccine getting approval, it will be public. If you don’t see the data but get an announcement, you’ll know it’s political theatre.

If they put it off a week or two just so the vaccine isn’t politicized, then yes. They can still prepare for rollout without the theatrics

Any vaccine approval in the next few months will be a judgment call. All the data normally required for such an approval will not be available. Public heath officials should absolutely take into account the implications of having a vaccine appear to be approved for political reasons as opposed to sound scientific ones. A two week delay would allow more data to accumulate, and relieve that possibly devastating political taint. Public trust is the most important factor after efficacy. And October or November, it’s still a rush job.

This is the downside of trump spending the past four years ignoring rules and sowing distrust. It’s a fucking shame. We now know that Convalescent Plamsa was rushed through because he was making demands it be done when the science wasn’t there.

No. The should approve it based on science, including the public health implications of the vaccine being perceived as rushed due to the political calendar.
