Civil disobedience has a big effect on the market perception of system coherence which is the foundation of fiscal stability. Countries can borrow money only against their perceived ability to tax. When states turn against feds and executive loses control of the federal infrastructure the bankers are beginning to scratch their heads. As with all perception based processes things then move quickly.

Well, they have no one to blame but themselves. Did they not create the environment which now engages in mass protest?

Yes, that is one way to look at things but my perspective is wider. Looking at the covid drama as a test applied to social systems in an evolutionary game there are winners and losers.

The countries which got on top of covid did it through isolation (Iceland, New Zealand, Taiwan, Fiji), draconian management (China) or both (North Korea). The US and a bunch of populous second world countries (Brazil, India, Mexico) are burning and most other countries are doing so so but will flare up again.

It is painful to watch but from a Darwinian perspective the system we cherished as a temple of personal freedoms and opportunities is struggling. One of the modes of failure is the opening of the social fractures. It is not that China is a land of unity but the likes of Tibetans, Uygurs or Falun Gong would never be allowed to turn city blocks into lawless wastelands. This difference in the style of governance may decide who is left standing when the dust has settled.

Or maybe it was so easy to predict that the US was going to massively fail with the virus on a relative basis because 1. We're a nation full of dumb-asses. 2. Have a highly dysfunction health care system. 3. Have no system in place to deal with economic turmoil. 4. Have no leadership from the top.

I knew the US was going to be the biggest loser on the block even before this whole thing started.  It's our culture, our economic system and moron at the top that made it inevitable.

I laugh when people try to compare our infection rates to Japan or Germany. They have a highly functional health care and economic system with people that work together in a time of crisis. That's the complete opposite of USA.

I could not see it coming - my instinctive feel was that the inventiveness will save the US. In a pandemic the most important health care stat is ICU beds per 1000 citizens and the numbers are:

Japan 13.5
Germany 38.7
USA 29.4

For comparison:

China 3.6
Iceland 9.1
New Zealand 4.6

I do not know of any national economy which could deal with the covid-scale global disruption but, to even have a place at the table, one needs a functional governance structure and the Portland example shows we do not.

Agree with your comments on sub-standard leadership on display. I do not blame Trump for the emergence of the virus or even the fact it has not been supressed in the US but I do think that 6 months on we should have a walk-in/drive-through testing system nationwide. This is something that a hi-tech economy backed up by some very bright people we have should have delivered. It is a federal project which should not be delegated to the states - otherwise the gear suppliers will run a Dutch auction. I also believe that he lost credibility by going in light at the beginning.

Almost 4 months ago to the day.

Here WE go

My liberty means your potential death.
We are not all in this together.
Old papers to confine your breath.
Failings sure,  but "socialism never!".

The guns are being bought.
Each to be the last man standing.
Perversion of nature by western thought.
It is I but not the flock that needs safe landing.

In this particular case.
With this particular flu bug problem.
Your all powerful group of individuals.
Will be powerless to stop them.

The other side of manifested difference.
Seems to wish all to survive.
A collective considerance
Many less need to be revived.

Geared to care more about a whole.
Masks worn to stop harming others.
Not months of supplies buried in holes.
Viruses suffocated when a collective society smothers.

Though the east is eqaully to blame.
We are all but cells with ideology.
How is it the we are not called the same.
Why do we fight with technology.

This planet all things being eqaul.
Couldve easily handled this.
Headed it of by stopping evil.
So obvious we should not miss.

We must see the images of the "3rd world".
Borne of our inequality they will suffer more.
Visions of death mean no denying.
This must make us change our lore.

Lol a couple blocks of civil disobedience has very little tangible effect on the economy unless the leaders decide to make it so. The Portland situation is manufactured political theatre by a president who thinks making liberal states appear like they’ve decended into lawless anarchy is his key to winning re-election.

Think about how much energy, rhetoric and resources he’s investing into preventing property crimes. He’s also talking about sending tens of thousands of troops into cities to prevent a couple of extra murders. Even if his plan worked as advertised, and say he reduced homicides in chiacgo by half, that would amount to less than one life saved per day. Meanwhile we are losing 1,000 people a day to covid and his attitude about that is “it is what it is.” It’s perverse.

More people died yesterday from covid than were murdered in Chicago in the past three years. Covid deaths are almost entirely preventable and we know how to do it. Other western countries are seeing a couple deaths a day. We are on the verge of seeing covid kill more people in a week than are murdered in a year in the US. A spike in homicides sucks, but the lives being lost to covid are so much more consequential to the American people and the American economy. It’s not even close.

I would be willing to bet he cares more about stopping the spread of covid than your average rioter. If they spread covid what do they care it only helps them push their agenda. Nobody will condem them for being out tho. Perfectly fine nothing to see here.  Lolooloooll

They’re outside. There’s tons of evidence that covid does not have much of a chance transmitting outside.

Trump cares about the virus to the extent that it is an extremely inconvenient problem. The things he would need to do to successfully control the spread, he is not willing to undertake because they are politically difficult. He’s a pussy. He’s afraid. He doesn’t care about people dying. He just wants to do what’s best for him without it being too difficult.

C'mon they're shoulder to shoulder by the hundreds and thousands.. Trump can't control the spread its up to the people to do the right thing and wear a mask and socially distance. I dont even like trump either he's so defensive and overly sensitive sometimes but I will take another four years of him rather than biden.

“Come on” is not an argument. There is no evidence the protests have contributed to any significant spread whatsoever. DC and NY have had daily protests for seven weeks and both cities have had relatively few cases during this period.

The fact is that the virus is mainly spreading in bars and restaurants and at home.

My argument is this: you can go out and claim to be fighting fascism and racism and all that in the midst of a global pandemic and not be required to wear a mask or even practice social distancing but people are dying in hospitals alone because they wont let their families visit them. How does that make sense?

Thats fucking dumb. America is not systematically racist. The riots are a waste of time and make the left look worse than they already did.

America has systemic racism.  To deny that is to be willfully ignorant.  You really think that African Americans just happen to be overrepresented in prisons, underrepresented in corporate boardrooms, and statistically of a lower socioeconomic class by coincidence?

Because if you protest what the establishment or media want you to protest you actually slow the spread of corona

A young black man from new york city has a better chance of succeeding than a young white man from a trailer trash state like kentucky. African americans today are accepted into colleges with lower test scores. There have been efforts to make ammends to what happened a hundred years ago. Also their is more class mobility in the united states than anywhere else in the world. Meaning if you come from an impoverished place in America you can rise to the top and get a good job and climb the corporate ladder. Unless your just a lazy fuck who says america is systematically racists. So am I being willfully ignorant?.. nah. China is a good example of what a real systemically racist country looks like. It's funny tho nobody condems china for their treatment of the uhgur muslims. Being forcefully sterilized and placed into "re-education camps". Thats real systematic racism.

If it isn't systemic racism, how do you explain the fact that African Americans are overrepresented in prisons, underrepresented in corporate boardrooms, and statistically of a lower socioeconomic class?
