I made waaaay too many plates when I started. Now I usually just put 2 or 3 t1 wedges on the same plate, take whatever looks best a few days later and focus on that.

It’s much easier to g2g than to make 15 plates imo.

I throw old plates in a box in case I mess up super bad and need to go back. But that hasn’t happened, mostly I end up digging through them looking for pins to clone.

I did the same which is why I mention it to newer growers I see who pour a bunch of plates. Better to save those extra plates for clones and whatnot and just focus on a few transfer plates at first. I usually transfer twice away from spores to drop a wedge or 3 time to go to LC or for an LI plate.

I put a few plates in the fridge, some in the ground, and some to grain. If it's a really vigorous or special transfer it goes to slant.

I don't mind having 5-10 transfers of each genetics.

I go by 2's, 2 plates get inoculated, 2 transfers from each plate moving forward until it's clean. I only have 10 glass petris and 12 small ball jars ("no pours") I have to really take care to take clean transfers but so far (aside from one mckennai print) I've always managed to do it in 4 transfers from spore.

Have some old plates I forgot about like the ones above, is it worthwhile to try and make any transfers or are the cultures likely too old by now?

I need to take this advice-- I'm in the habit of making like three separate transfer plates from every decent looking one I get to aim for clean ones, and I'm burning through plates too fast that way.

Like you I have more leftovers that I just don't use for anything. Since I'm getting a better at eliminating contams during plate making, I gotta start economizing.

When you're a very small-scale hobbyist like I am, it's unreasonable to buy a 500-case of petri's, but buying 20-packs every 6 weeks gets expensive too.

Has anybody ever seen blue bruising on mycelium on agar before? Or more likely would that be contamination?

I see where I was going wrong with the many transfers, ill revise that method. I actually sprung for the 500 piece case, the price difference per plate was insane compared to the 20 per sleeve. Thanks all for the advice

I've only seen bruised cultures from reactions to contamination or extreme environmental fluctuations. ..I'm sure it could randomly happen under normal conditions.

Almost all my pe6 plates would bruise on the wedge when the plates would get about 3/4 full. That's the only time I remember seeing it but those were clean plates.

Got some decent growth going on my first transfer from the single GT mss plate that germed. Going to do a few transfers from this as soon as I get some time to pour some more plates.

Third transfer of this B+ looking nice, but was really awed when I looked at the T2 plate 😁

You wanna transfer from the piece on the right; left side of it looks good. Also from the top; 6:00-ish.

Do it asap bc otherwise it'll be hard to not scoop stuff from the other patches too.

Give each tissue sample its own dish at this stage.

I think you are totally right. Prepping to cut in an hour roughly for all the 10 plates. This is the strongest I've seen so it seems worth it.
