I just bought some cork borers to get a uniform circle cut.  Pouring the dishes different thickness of agar makes lifting it annoying and has a huge wall to grow down off of the chunk you cut out.

Another question, what do you consider an appropriate amount of managable plates?  I could probably spawn another 1000 but who has that kind of time?

I keep way too many on hand and right now I have around 4 dozen no-pours (I only do intermediate transfers to clean up and compare growth rate on no pours) and around a dozen plates (germinating spores and comparing multiple samples, maybe gonna go to LC with these if I can be arsed).

Thats already too many - My next projects are going to be try learn G2G (I have almost 2 dozen small master jars for this), try some LC and another round of oats with Gulf Coast on em. I can only use a handful of my plates for those last two, so essentially everything else has to be transferred in the mean while. Which means around 4 dozen expansion transfers of cultures I'm already happy with and ditching the rest. I dont really need to do this, but overgrown plates are less useful to me right now while I'm low on grain jars to actually use the cultures for spawn.

So for you woot, I would say for every variety you only really need around 6-10 plates of each variety you possess at various stages of growth. I might stop doing so many varieties and strains at once, maybe focusing on just expanding 2-3 varieties every time I do agar work so my work is more staggered and planned out on the basis of what actual inoculations I want to do next.

im so far beyond managable. I was going through 500 every 10 days or so for a while. Now im doing about 300 a month so its much nore managable but still excessive

But such is pheno hunting

Rn im workin w like 28 varieties of cubes and 9 species, up to 15 culture projects for each. Just silly and rediculous

Dont do what i do unless you love agar work lol...  i really enjoy pheno hunting more than cropping out

Here's one that looks pretty uniform... I am curious, do you guys think these are time-based temperature rings?  Looks like one ring per day, ~5 days roughly.
