Let's think about forest fires. Maybe so many morels grow after a fire because the spores are carried far away by the heat and thus find unrelated sexual partners.

Why no morels grow in a field after 2-3 years? Because certain food sources are missing? On the other hand, you can fertilize. It could be that this field is only mixed with related spores and mycelium and therefore no longer produces fertile mycelium.

My story: I grew from spores of a morel spawn. In the meantime I have prepared a bed (end of October). With spruce mulch. The spawn was not ready yet. And winter came. In spring I wanted to finally inoculate the bed with spawn. What do I see ... morels! I stand there with the sack full of morel spawn.

It doesn't matter whether the mulch is the substrate or not. The mulch contained the mycelium. Foreign mycelium. Morel mycelium grows quickly and it's may be omnipresent. What happened? Maybe the foreign mycelium met mycelium in my soil that had been there for a long time. The two strangers made love. done.

As you can see in the picture, my morels don't grow in the bed but next to it. Typical. The border / fence of my bed goes at least 10 cm (I think that's 3 inches) underground. Defense against snails. Why does the morel never actually grow in the bed? Because they grow where they come across strange mycelium?

Beneficial bacteria in the soil, perhaps? Spruce has some antibacterial properties, so the soil would of had a different group of bacterial dudes living in it than the mulch.

if bacteria are the reason ... why do mushrooms grow after forest fires? The bacteria should be in the rainwater. But that doesn't explain why after 2-3 years no more fruits grow.

I think we produce mycelium that is not fertile.

I don't have a microscope and I don't know what a fusion of the cell nuclei or something looks like with ascomycetes ... maybe a possible attempt for a farmer like me would be: Take sclerotia (loaded with nutrients) of the same genus from as different as possible Areas and put them together in a bowl full of sand (without nutrients)

Maybe forest fires wipe out all/most other competing fungi. Because of the morel's sclerotia it can easily survive what most other fungi can't.

A quick google search turned up a few studies of the effects of forest fires on soil life. I will definitely be reading these once I get time. It seems there is some types of bacteria that experience a short lived boom in population after a fire due to the added water soluble nutrients added by the ash.

14. A method according to claim 13 wherein an aqueous solution containing less than about 1% urea is applied each 2 to 3 days in an amount of at least about 40 ml per square foot.

What thoughts do we have as to why urea is used in solution?

What is the organism's use of the urea? pH balance? hormonal? signaling?

PS - This seems suplimental, but then why urea and not another nitrogen source? Urea affects RNA... https://arxiv.org/pdf/0912.1175.pdf

Unbelievable what chaos there is. So many species ... they have to cross each other.

Sclerotia can survive a lot, but a forest fire... I don't think so. After all, sclerotia lay (near) on the surface ... mycelia of various fungi could survive under the earth ...

I think there is a misunderstanding concerning morels growing from bark mulch.
Most people think that they feed on the bark mulch.

I found these morels apparently fruiting from a 4 inch thick layer of coniferous bark mulch.
I dig them out and to my great surprise they didn't fruit from the bark mulch, but from the sandy-loamy soil beneath the bark mulch.

And that's the crucial pont: THE BARK MULCH IS NOT PART OF THE SUBSTRATE. The morel mycelium does not feed on the bark mulch.

My guess is that the rain is leaching out some agents from the bark mulch and the water containing those compounds
is seeping into the soil and is inducing fructification.


     


Another thing we have got to consider is parthenogenesis in fungi. Compare and contrast asexual reproduction and parthenogenesis.
🤔 But which ones are parthenogenic? Landscape or woodland species?

If these fungi were asexual then they would be Costantinella cristata at the first chance it had at the right conditions and temperatures.

If you think about it Gary Mills is suggesting parthenogenesis in the description of the preparation of spawn. There is no introduction of a compatible mating type therefore it seems that parthenogenesis is the pathway. But what causes the parthenogenesis? Well it could be the springtails present on the morels because they are made parthenogenic due to a bacteria known as Wolbachia which is carried in the eggs of springtails as well. But does that bacteria affect the morel spores as well?

Urea is used as a nutrient supplement for yeast in wine making so it applies to the majority of ascomycetes.

Another thing to consider is that Costantinella cristata may always be in a leaf mold conidial form and is separate from the Morchella spawn derived from ascospores. C. cristata may be the compatible mating type and stays asexual mycelia all the time while the Morchella spawn always requires both to form its type of mycelia. If parthenogenesis plays a part in any of that kind of pattern it might be with the Morchella spawn.

Forest fires release nitrogen and promote Nitrococcus and nitrosomonas bacteria even years after the fire, all cellulose digesting fungi need nitrogen to aid in Laccase enzyme production to convert cellulose and lignin into lipids and sugars as a source of energy that’s how the nitrogen cycle works (nitrogen/carbon) so there’s your answer to why fires help morels and why Owers uses urea it’s the nitrogen, there’s even several sources that demonstrate morels will grow on rags dripped with urea every 3 days and also urea liquid culture, nitrogen is a critical aspect of wood/forest fungi

Yes I’ve grown morel spawn and Sclerotia and actually fruits outside

Also in a recent publication it was proven that pinning is triggered by heat stress, after coming out of a cold dormant period they become heat stressed around 50-70f that explains why they are only found in spring and I think this also plays a part in how owners figured it out without cold dormant periods, when they go below 40F, Laccase production stops which means they stop braking down carbon for food, and that’s the same principles owers used and the Chinese patent uses, they take away the food source or stop Laccase enzyme production or denitrification. Then water them heavy keep constant air flow and heat stress between 50-70f if it goes over it will go back into its mycelia stage or just die off without Laccase/food
