This is the starter/mother spawn used in primary soil inoculation

Inoculation of soil surface

And the weed mat used after that's covered with soil and watered in.

Not sure if this pic is altered because the morels look fake or if it's the lighting, but look at the brown/orange conidia/sclerotia where the bag was removed

It's surface conidia, conidia is the typical asexual form of most ascomycota, like common powder mildew on leaves, it looks like powder or ash lol

Looks like conidia or surface sclerotia, it's a little to big and fuzzy in my opinion to be a pin, but in my heart I want it to be a pin

Great thread.  I really need to start some indoor experiments.  It seems funny that no one on any boards has produce a single picture of a successful morel grow (beyond those related to Mills).

In my experience with prepared outdoor beds, I often see disk shaped ascomycetes (also noted in Stamets).  If you look carefully at the picture below you can see what appears to be abundant small disk fungi growing along with the morels.  This combined with the plants is a clue that the conditions of the casing is not sterile and maybe not even pasteurized.

Workman,

Those are primordia and they are spherical. I think at least because that's what Ower and Mills had described.

Spherical formations.

I think the lighting is playing tricks on you, making it look concave instead of convex.

Look just under his arm and you see one from a side profile.

at least somewhat what the conversation says :excited:

Hey rams here's an update on my jars about a month in and I believe I made a solid  correlation between drought conditions and larger stone development I believe I'm on to something here, I've seen a correlation between drought conditions in wild morel cycles when there's more rain in the previous year the yields are low but If there was a drought the following spring, brings a bumper crop. This also explains why people believe wild fire influence them, it's not the fire or charcoal or the die back of symbiotic plant partners, it's the drought conditions of the soil, they prefer well drained soils, but in the picture you can see the largest sclerotia were formed in the dried out surface soil, further supporting my hypothesis, the slcerotia are storage sheds for drought, so to get large sclerotia it's important to provide this

I grew a bunch of agar out and put to oats.  Then a couple weeks ago I put half to layered myco bags.  The rest I just did today.  I noticed a bad smell in the jars, kind of like cat piss.  Then I went to check on the bags I had in the dark and they have the same odour.  I didn’t take picture of the jars but they just looked whispy.

I don’t suppose morel mycellium is supposed to smell like cat piss is it??

I'm not sure about cat piss smell, but I remember when I was taking spore prints from some black morels the smell inside the glove box I printed them in was very pungent and had a strong earthy ammonia smell to it, or something similar. The smell got really strong because I sealed the SAB really well and added some containers of water to increase humidity. So I supposed cat piss could have that ammonia smell. Do you notice any wet spots or greasy looking spots in the jars?

No, if anything they looked maybe a bit dry.  They looked really good. Ammonia is a good description.

I tried searching cat and cat piss urine on this thread with no luck lol

Of course I can't speak with absolute certainty, but I think the smell is normal and you don't have anything to worry about. Especially if you don't notice anything off in the jars.

I will hold out hope!  I’ll keep them but I think I’ll put them in the shop where it’s colder.  Mimic colder weather, less smell in my closet..... 😝

SunnyDayzeS ... "Mimic colder weather" do you think they don't grow at warm temperatures? The fruiting bodys grow in spring, if its getting warm and than a period of warm weather is following. Normally they should grow better if it's warm ... or not?

@ SunnyDayzeS & 7Suns:
What temperature do you let your glasses grow through?

Yes, but they never had a winter is my reasoning.  I’ve read that people have done that, not saying it’s right or not.  Spring is usually colder than room temperature.
I read that the ground needs to be 55 f.  We still have a foot of snow on the ground so it will be a while before I get them outside.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand the second one, can you explain?

Your current morchel cultures, at what ambient temperature do they stand and grow?
