yeah that makes us feel that morel cultivation is as easy as like cultivating tomatoes :haha:

In China they use only a a handful of select strains of M. importuna and even less of M. sextelata.

IMHO I think strain and species is a main factor for their cultivation.

In China there is also the frequent use of what they call "nutrition bag", it too seems to be a very important factor for their success but I do know of at least one grower having enormous success without.

exactly .. i always hear this term "nutrition bag" whenever i see a chinese morel cultivation video.. wonder what that is

The nutrition bag is what I mentioned earlier and attempted to do. The scientific term for it is exogenous nutrition layer. Exogenous being defined as: "relating to or developing from external factors OR growing or originating from outside an organism." The outdoor farming method used in china is just a bag of substrate composed mainly of grains and sawdust, this is placed on top of an already established morel bed and left to colonize the bag for an extended period, 40 days if I recall correctly and then it's removed. This supposedly induces fruiting because the substrate goes from high nutrition (bag present) to low nutrition (removal of bag).

I dont recall where I read this. The Asian  cultivation was by mistake. They were spawning beds outdoors and somehow left a grain bag of spawn and found it much later. It was the only area that fruited. It would have had to have holes for the mycelium to grow  out of, which doesnt seem to make sense.

I made up 35 bags of supplemented sawdust. They sat in my steamer for 5 days before I used em but I think they will turn out clean. Didnt see any growth in them so they got steamed good.

It's possible that they were spawning large areas with grain spawn and someone left or dropped a bag on the ground and it got a hole in it or was cut to distribute but never did and just sat there. But the way they do it is by placing a clean grain bag with a hole in it on top of the colonized substrate, allow it to colonize and then remove it. Some of these farms in Szechuan are producing thousands of kilograms annually.

However I agree with BlueDisa, I think success is largely dependent on species and like 7suns said M. rufobrunea grows outside of the typical season, which would be easier for indoor and outdoor cultivation and was done by Masaphy in Israel indoors.

I am getting a lot of this information from this study - "Artificial cultivation of true morels: current state, issues and perspectives

Beautiful work rams and healthy looking sclerotia, mine are coming along decent now, been keeping them cool around 60f and starting to get clusters of small white sclerotia, actually for shits and giggles might open and invert a jar on the surface of some soil mix, and also considering making a secondary exo food source to place on top, I've been trying to find pictures that show both fruit bodies and the "die back" of the conidia layer on the surface, in owers original patent I believe it mentioned that after spawning, white conidia emerge from the substrate surface then it dies back becoming golden thread like in appearance, then the asocarps (fruit) form

So I just did a lot of google translation from some Chinese scholarly articles, they seem to just inoculate bags of supplemented wood chips/sawdust with clay/soil mix,  then they crumble it up after its colonized for 20/30 days and spread it lightly and evenly over the surface of loamy soil, then it gets covered with only a few cm of dry soil, then it's watered in and covered with weed mat with holes poked for fae, this is allowed to rest for a week or 2 until the mycelium over runs the surface, then the weed mat is pulled back and what I believe to be none colonized, pasteurized supplemented hwfp/10%bran and soil prepared the same as the master spawn, this None colonized bag is placed on the surface of the colonized soil, with two holes punched one at both ends of the bag, the surface mycelium runs up into the bag, and feeds the existing mycelium in the soil, it doesn't appear they remove the bags after and there's pics with fruit and the bags still in place

i believe altitude should also be a factor if grown outdoor like the Chinese. and i think if grown in tropicals or subtropicals areas it should be in the winters...

I just added that video and what you wrote to my journal, great work!

@rams, would morels grow in tropical areas?  I thought they needed freezing temps, defined seasons.

that is why i am saying for outdoor cultivation in tropical especially in sub tropical it should be in winters. we have some sub tropical areas here where we have freezing temperature in winters for 3 months.

we live in subtropical mountains here but never seen morels here but there are places a bit distant from here where they are found. i have a gut feeling that they should grow here artificially..

I don't believe they need "freezing temps" to cold and it inhibits growth as well as damaging fruit bodies, the sclerotia can overwinter it but I don't believe it's necessary, colder temps around 50f-65f is standard in fruiting induction here in America, as well as other factors like soil, I live by the ocean in nc and I've only heard of them growing closer inland by the mountains, rufobrunea seems to be the only one that will grow outside of these temperature ranges and that's why I mention it growing out of season it seems it can tolerate up to 70f-75f correct me if I'm wrong

After the mother/master spawn is spread over the soil, covered with soil, and weed mat and allowed to recolonize, im assuming this is after they pull the weed mat off? Not sure

Yes, I believe it's placed on the colonized soil surface with holes in it, I believe the bag is placed uncolonized and the starter/mother spawn in the soil runs up into the Uncolonized bag

Then it looks like the  aerial mycelium on the surface receded to the local food source exogenous bags, but primary mycelium under the surface is still active
