Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it can be said with conviction what substrate they actually prefer.

I could agree with that. but I thought they were classified as mycorrhizal and or saprotrophic

Maybe I'm confused by terminology and types of substrate here. But isn't saprophytic the decay and digestion of organic matter and mycorrhyzial the association with roots, generally trees but not limited to trees?

And saprophytic being broken down into three segments, primary (wood), secondary (compost) and tertiary (degraded/digested compost). If a mushroom or fungus is saprophytic and mycorrhyzial, wouldn't this suggest that it lives in some sort of soil or compost that has some form of plant growing in the same substrate. Correct me if I'm wrong again, but just because a fungus is mycorrhyzial doesn't mean it can't be either a secondary or tertiary decomposer,  but it's unlikely to find a mycorhyzial primary, because it's hard to form a relationship with a plant if it's feeding on its alive or dead wood.

And wouldn't morels would fall in the category of secondary or tertiary and composted manure would fall in a secondary or tertiary substrate? Or am I just fucked in the head?

thanks for the knowledge! all I know is morels tend to grow at the base of trees and in woodchips. I think that for them to form a relationship with trees they need an in. infected trees seem to be a target for morels. I think that's why fires are good for morel season

No problem, but I am not even 100% sure on that too. Just my understanding of the various types of substrate media and the type of fungal decomposers.

Looking good Spotter, hoping for some pins shortly!

I have 12lb of morel grainspawn that I plan to expand to sawdust. I will be doing many substrate and growing experiments. If anyone wants me to test their ideas I may have time to do a couple extra trials.

2 things I want to make clear, they don't grow on manure, and usually wood chips or sawdust as your substrate isn't going to work, the sclerotia are spawned to soil, producing conidia on the soil surface seems to be the trick

so guys and gals.. the first step starts..
filled pp bags with grain but didnt have stones so made some with the aluminium foil i had ..

dug out my only flower pot to get some soil..

the pp ring put and nonabsorbent cotton plugged.. covered it with pieces of pp plastic to avoid moisture getting into the bags..

they are the in the PC now..

PS: trying them in PP bags because had only had 3 jars and had to save them for Cordyceps try

10 days after inoculation ..

how does it look folks..??
the grain though remains a bit to colonize from the bottom.. some white spots turning yellow, hope they are sclerotia..

Nice, what is your layering?  How did you inoculate?

I’ve got quite a bit of colonized grain now, need to start some bags like that right away.

Looks like sclerotia to me!

Once you get. Abunch you can try to fruit from the sclerotia, or do you plan to fruit from
Bag directly?

hey sunny, the bottom layer is wheat, the middle one is aluminium foil balls i made because i didnt have stones at that time and the top layer is the soil from my flower pot. i PCd for 3 hours and inoculated with wedge and then buried the wedge with sterile scalpel by scratching the soil.

once the bags are ready i will inoculate an outdoor bed with one bag in my friends backyard as i dont have space for the outdoor bed. and with another i will experiment in a  tray at my place.

hey fisher i dont think anybody has succeeded fruiting them from bags directly. will be trying an outdoor patch and one tray inside.
