Please don't be posting that fruitcake known as Gary Novak's loopy information. He's already been called out for his crackpot bullshit.

https://uncommondescent.com/evolution/mushroom-physiologist-attacks-id/

He is a fruitcake of the ninth order.

Morels are the holy grail for mushroom cultivation. There are few claims of success growing them in an indoor setting. There’s a company in Georgia (I think it’s Georgia) that has a patent on a process claimed to work. That’s just a bit of trivia. I’ve cultivated mushrooms in laboratory settings before and investigated what it would take for morels once.

Novak is a crank of the first order. Just a glance at his other ravings is confirmation. I’m surprised he hasn’t invented a perpetual motion machine too (or has he and I missed it on his web page?). There’s no such thing as a mushroom physiologist. Novak invented that too. The real ones are called mycologists. I suspect Novak got a little too enthusiastic in sampling his p.cubensis crops which are always the first species us budding (pun intended, budding is how yeast reproduce) mycologists become interested in as college freshmen.

Good to know.  I know you have been at this a lot longer than most, much respect.
Anyone you do recommend learning from?  So much info out there, too much wasting time on bad info.

Unfortunately I abruptly had to give up my testing but still interested in learning for the future.

Yeah grab those landscape morel spores and cultures don't waste time on east coast species that grow in deciduous forests.
They are still a mystery. Don't listen to Carsten Carstensen! He'd claim the coronavirus was his discovery if it could make him a fast buck.
Nothing but landscape morels have been fruited on demand.
And they are all of the black clade of morels.

I have a recorded conversation between me and Katrina Malachowski (Jame's Malachowski's daughter) and we talked about the Chinese outdoor grow-op and how they are threatening the indoor morel grow-op. She seemed cool but her interests are way out there not even on board with mycology.

It's been this way with the Chinese on a lot of stuff. Now they want to say the coronavirus came from pangolins yet pangolins are in zoos everywhere and yet none of their handlers caught anything from them. More quack science from the Chinese and that was the case when they tried to document their landscape morel which they defiantly tried to label as Morchella esculenta.
Then on top of that they tried to mislabel a bunch of other species and concepts dealing with the patented tech. Keep the Chinese away from the Paranormal Activity movies it will just make things worse.

Pangolin scales are a huge black market item consumed by the Chinese. It may be a reach but not out of the question. Their open markets have live animals, entrails and fresh meat and products all in extremely close proximity. Terrible health practices.

Yeah I don't think that stuff is any animal market stuff. Man-made maybe. There are countless news articles saying they were researching the SARS virus in Wuhan and that some of the researchers were selling experimental bats to wet market vendors. All kinds of weird shit being mentioned.
Ok back to Carsten Carstensen...where is he getting his morel spores? Are they a GMO? Big questions going on.

Dried morels he imported from China, he used them to make a culture. Saw some of the pics he posted of it many moons ago.

I'm inclined to think that pasteurization vs sterilization of substrate is key in success. Nematodes seem to be only one triggering for the fruiting. There must be another such as pH balance shifts such as after a fire and/or the acid rain chemicals. These will obviously fruit indoors when you take the colonized substrate from outdoors and apply proper FAE and humidity.

If cubes will grow in the dark in high Co2 practically neglected and Morchella will pop up outside easily with applied slury then this really doesn't seem like it should be a hard indoor grow with proper FAE, humidity, and substrate...so I'll waste a year to fail or succeed as it's better to try and learn than to never try at all.

Already have prints from Arizona morels I got from the hawk and a dedicated climate controlled room. I'll shop for some other varieties also. Gotta try them all side by side and see what happens.

I'll probably go with gravel layer, then sand, then soil, then apple leaves or another known compatible leaf and then some sawdust of the same wood. I'll pasteurize the microbe treated substrate tub in whole floated in a sous vide tub. I think drainage will be key as well as some misters that create rain. I may even disolve the acid rain chems into the misting pump's tank. Maybe put some dead mice or other rodent in the tubs, laid on top?

So much information in this thread it's gonna take a while to cut the requirements out from the speculation.

I'll probably fail, but at least I'll have fun and learn something.

BTW coolest thread ever.

Maybe I'll try adding some decayed apples also. The fruit could have something in the skins that helps fruiting or taste after they're decayed. Also bird droppings since birds like to poop from trees.

I don't think Mills is hiding anything. I don't think the patent is hiding anything. Why do you pay for a patent and then skip the most important thing?

I want to think logically: It is generally said that it is expensive to grow morels. What is expensive? Bird droppings? Work / time is expensive.

Why are there so many different types of morels?

The sexuality of the morel is important.

I think you have to find the right sexual partner. Maybe morels don't want to be related. That is why there are so many types. That is why it is so expensive. Because you have to have individual spores germinated under the microscope. Then merge them. And then see if the merger is done. So a fertile mycelium.

What do you think?

"Mulch morels" like M. rufobrunnea, M. importuna and M. sextelata are the only Morels cultivated so far.
I think there is a misunderstanding concerning morels growing from bark mulch.
Most people think that they feed on the bark mulch.

I found these morels apparently fruiting from a 4 inch thick layer of coniferous bark mulch.
I dig them out and to my great surprise they didn't fruit from the bark mulch, but from the sandy-loamy soil beneath the bark mulch.

And that's the crucial pont: THE BARK MULCH IS NOT PART OF THE SUBSTRATE. The morel mycelium does not feed on the bark mulch.

My guess is that the rain is leaching out some agents from the bark mulch and the water containing those compounds
is seeping into the soil and is inducing fructification.
