Small update, I looked at the 3 substrates today and one had growth. If it's actually morel mycelium or not is debatable, but morel does start sort of wispy, I have a bit of hope, but it's probably cobweb mold. Funnily enough the one with the sclerotia I posted didn't have any noticeable growth.

Digital, when you said you made up some bulk substrate, did you use food sources? I've been studying the Chinese patent pretty heavily lately and my jars will hit the 60 day mark on,  5/09/19    this coming month so I will be spawning, I'm going to use a soil substrate with only clay/sand/Verm very poorly mixed, so it allows both water retention in the clay but proper drainage from the sand,

I do not want them to colonize this substrate for food, instead I will make up some exogenous food source bags with sawdust/apples/soybeans/yeast and sterilize it then slit the bottom of the bag and place in contact with the inoculated soil substrate, this should further grow the sclerotia in the soil and then after another 30-60 days it will be removed,

then cold shock for 14-30 days then watered constantly for 24-48 hours then drained, then mimicking natural spring conditions with constant air movement and temps around 65f-70f and natural light, I believe the real key is food source, application of secondary food, cold shocking, constant air movement, and heavy watering also timing is critical at the right life stages, we can't think about them in the same sense as regular fungi, a nutritional substrate doesn't seem practical from what I've read, it needs to be removable

Another reason I believe they fruit outside but not indoors is because of the concentration of co2 ppm. They require from dr owers patent very very low co2 when fruiting so a fan must be constantly blowing on them to keep them in check but not so much that it dries the surface out tremendously, just low constant ventilation

Also it appears proper nutrition is critical such as  lipids aka fats, nitrogen, protein, and vitamins such as b12, b9, b7,b5 and b1 because they all aid in the storage and synthesis of fats and sugar/carbs

hey 7suns, i have just inoculated a flowerpot with the composted sawdust+chips spawn that i had extra apart from the layered ones and have kept it outside in shade with a plastic covering it to maintain the desired humidity for the spawn run. will check in next 15-20 days or so if the mycelium has spread or the insects have partied on it :awedance:

i also planning to prepare a exogenous food bag for them as you have described. just wondering when should i place the bag on it.

so while inoculation i removed 2 big sclerotia from the bag to check how they taste, as i have never tasted morels. i washed them and ate, they were firm and tasted nutty and delicious (obviously raw).

I did and I didn't lol. As I mentioned earlier I made 4 different substrates in an attempt to fruit them indoors. They went progressively from a somewhat nutrient rich substrate to a nutrient poor substrate. I tried to copy the substrate from the owers patent and the one from Gary Mills as best as possible. I also wanted to just test a typical secondary or tertiary type substrate too, which is why I used very well composted cow manure, it was the only manure I could get for free at the time. My reasoning being that morels in a natural habitat are often found on forest floors under leaf liter, which are generally pretty hummus rich soils from the decomposed forest liter and would indicate to me that morels would be a tertiary decomposers.

I wanted to see how they would react to the different substrates and expected the ones with the most nutrition (50/50 cow manure/verm) to not even grow, but it was the only one that didn't contaminate and it grew just fine and produce a lot of sclerotia, that was the picture I posted earlier with the tupperware container on top, which was my exogenous nutrition layer.

I agree with you idea that they likely need a nutrient deficient substrate to grow on and then have an external nutritional layer added and removed, all of the processes I read have this concept to some degree (removal of a grain layer or a nutrition bag as with the Chinese methods). But apart from the Chinese paper I read (which doesn't mention what the actual substrate is, just that it's out doors, so I assume it's just well drained soil) the owers patent and the gary mills process substrates do have some degree of nutrition in their fruiting substrates. The owers substrate being wood bark and Gary Mills substrate being wood, rice hulls and soybean meal. I substituted cow manure because I didn't want to find rice hulls or soybean meal.

I too was trying to mimic as best I could that Chinese paper I posted in an an earlier post, which is very similar to what you are attempting. I planned to allow each of the 4 substrates to colonize, then I was going to case them, let the mycelium run the casing for 7-14 days, then apply an exogenous nutrition layer, allow that to colonize for the 30-40 days suggested, remove the exogenous nutrition, cold shock them in a fridge for a 7-14 days. Then I planed to dunk them to simulate the irrigation that's mentioned in all of the sources I read and finally fruit them in a high air flow and humid environment, ideally under 10c but I couldn't refrigerate my F.C. so I tried at room temp, which was 19c at the time, I didn't have success.

Sorry for the long post. On a side note, it now snowed again here and is going down to -4c again overnight, so they might just freeze and die. But they did survive winter so maybe the cold snap will do them good.

I had already suspected that you talked about Mr. Carstensen :-) .... but in the last 2 years it has become more and more quiet on his YouTube channel with success stories ...

🤔 Something must have happened to his operation.

There is also an other guy in german facebook group, who cultivated morel "indoor" ... not really, but in plastic trays according to the Chinese method and fruiting i think in greenhouse in spring.

He's doing the same thing as Carstensen?

Been enjoying all the extra input on here recently!

All my bags are looking pretty good.....except this one!  I think I shall call him The Hulk.  The rest of the bags are smelling better too, less ammonia like.

Think I’ll throw it outside this weekend in a little test spot, probably a waste of time but worth a shot.

yes its worth a shot. . i have buried one of my 'extra' spawn bag in the only flowerpot i have sacrificing my chilly plant :frown: for my morels experiment. hope its sacrifice doenst go in vane.. while i was digging the soil i noticed some worms too but i still went for it. i dont have much hope but i noticed mycelium taking over the soil. i am yet to see any mycelium that can outpace morel.

I think so ... he use flat containers with sand or earth soil, put a bag on it with maybe  some nutrients and now in spring it looks like a green house, where he let it fruit.

Just wanted to update you guys, I just finished spawning 3 large flat tubs with my separated sclerotia, and I sterilized 12 qt jars of my exogenous nutrition recipe I devised with apple wood sawdust, b vitamin complex, flax seed oil, nitrogen fertilizer, and wbs all mixed and sterilized, for my lids I just used aluminum foil and the jar bands,  I'm going to allow my spawned sclerotia to rest and send out new rhizomes in search of food after I see it breaking through the surface I will cut an x into the foil on the exogenous food jars and invert them on top of the soil casing, hopefully the mycelium travels up it and reaches the food further developing the sclerotia for another month or so

Just a brief update on my part too. The 3 separate substrate containers I've got from last fall are all showing signs of similar growth. The picture here is the most advanced and looks similar to a condida layer. The other 2 are showing similar but slight growth. I expected all of them to contaminate, which still may occur, but my mood has went from skeptical to mildly optimistic. I plan to remove the tinfoil layer I have to increase co2 later next week and hopefully induce fruiting, as this is generally the time of year morels naturally fruit.

Morel season is over but I just wanted to share my plate that I finally got around to making. After numerous failed attempts with fresh specimens earlier this season I decided to try a dried morchella Americana  from last year. This is after one transfer.
