I use grass clippings exclusively for everything plant and myco related, instead of store bought straw/hay

hay is from young dried grass clippings (found in your yard)

as opposed to straw which is from mature dried cereal grain that have been farmed for seeds already.

It also says that hay is more nutritious than straw being that its younger and still has yet to flower.

This explains why its quick to contam rather than straw.

fascinating. i wonder how the nutrition of continually "harvested" yard grass compares to hay that's been grown for a season and chopped all at once. probably about the same?

i guess there's my ignorance showing. explains why hay is for horses, and straw is for mulch.

Where I come from straw is the rest product (stems) of any kind of harvested grains, such as rye or wheat whereas hay is long grass that is dried and baled end of summer to feed the animals during wintertime

Edit: in short:
- hay is fed to the horses / cows
- straw is what they crap on

Hay is from grass...no matter what maturity. Straw is from grain, just like tweeq said. Wheat rye and oats are the main grains that straw is the byproduct of. I've used both, but prefer hay because it's generally finer. Straw is very coarse and stiff.

So update time.  My agar dish is sectoring?  About 3/4 is fluffy white mycelium.  The other part is questionable but since these are cincts I'm not sure.  I might transfer both sectors to see what happens.  Pics later if I can get them.

I also have a print from d0urd3n which I'm putting to agar soon.

Ok so this is what I came home to after my vacation .these are all ms plates except the one pretty sure I have stones but it's so strange how it kind of stalled out. I'm going to mix up some stronger agar and make a transfer

One of the links in the OP had caught my attention. The site has some pictures of another project. It shows supposed sclerotia of Pan. cambodginiensis and Pan. tropicalis, what could indicate more Panaeolus spp. can form truffles? No background information mentioned..

Nice! Some of you guys waiting on prints right now will have to be patient. I had to send a lot of prints to a lot of places and keeping it all straight can be hectic! Lol

I just sent another round out and a couple people may get a second letter. All these ones have two prints...please put the second one to good use. Trade, give away, whatever.

Still waiting on mine but highly excited to recieve them. Just out of curiosity can high ambient temps (such as the back of an unconditioned mail truck on a sweltering summer day) affect spores? Or is it just not hot enough?

I have also received a print a have a few plates looking almost as far along as yours.

Since the growth is so nonuniform where do you plan on taking a transfer from? Was initially thinking if stones are what we are after then perhaps the best spot to transfer from is where the mycelium has become more dense and stone-like?

Not sure if you've given it any thought or I am overthinking...

My question is the same. I'm sure the real damage will occur to spores that are hydrated, but can they survive high heat over a given period of time in their dry print form?

I had a syringe of Ps. cyanescens get ruined from the post man having my package rest on his passenger seat. Syringe was very warm to the touch and nothing was viable after I let it cool to room temp. Spores that I won't get reimbursed for.

Just popping an update pic in here, per 1WithU's request. Its been about 10 days since a "contam" scare that ended up being early sclerotia. Not every jar is like this, its about 50% very stoney, 50% white fluffy mycelium. It seems the ones that germinated earlier developed this way, the slower/ less aggressive growers from the multispore syringe are more uniform/fluffy.

Anyway pic is attached. Gonna move these to bulk w/ hpoo, coir, vermiculite, and gypsum soon. Try to get a couple fruitings and spore prints/LC clones out of em to continue working with them, then move the block outside into a hay bale mixed with horse some manure to see if it takes. Would love to see these pop up in a consistent outdoor spot.
