Blue's Poo (clean thread)

I'll just start with a haha. Most of you should know what is amusing about this thread. Anyway, I'll start with a repost:
A kitty kat is colonizing some blue's poo now. It's over 1/2 colonized and looking good. I'll check with her for more details, but I think it was a 5# sack. She used a quart of spawn on it, probably wheat. Roughly 5 days into colonization now. I'll get strain info and other details from her tonight and see if she'll author a log on it.
(following posts could be edited, rather than locking the thread, but you gotta do what you gotta do...but lets not discous the thankless job of moderating, this is a cult forum)

In reply to:
matts, blues poo compost IS crap!...horsecrap and cubensis mushrooms love it. But it does help to have some skill as a cultivator.
We shouldn't get into whether that was a slightly disguised dig or simply a statement. But it is one that I agree with. Although the colonization seems to be entirely easy, there are many things that one could screw up and blame it on the product. Slightly infected spawn, improper spawn running environment etc all could affect colonization and be blamed on the substrate. I would consider things like blues poo to be intermediate level methods meaning that newbs could probably get away with it just fine, but there is more oportunity for failure than with the pf tek. Some cultivation skill is recomended, IMO.

In reply to:
The only concerns I have with your product are pasteurization and drying. It seems to me, properly pasteurized and dried horse poo should have an earthy smell, as the rank smell is produced by bacteria's metabolic gasses. I am not sure whether the poo TM recieved was dry or not...but it should be 100% dry, even dessicated...I wouldn't want to buy a bunch of water.
The poo that this girl is playing with was properly pasteurized. It had a classic smell of quality compost: earthy, peaty, with just a hint of straw/fresh cut grass. About the drying, yes, dessicated compost would be nice, but thats not what this product, or any other commercially available mushroom compost is. Blues poo is a ready to go compost which has been balanced to the proper moisture content (It was checked and I'll post data as I get the details). I personally feel that a dehydrated compost would be a great product, but that's another story altogether.

Well, there's a big difference there... Mine smelled exactly like raw sewage. Also had a lot of rocks and stones and large chucks of wood and brown soil in it.

So what you're saying is that it was bagged, sealed and shipped before it was ready?

I think that's exactly what he's saying. Or at least that's what it sounds like. Amonia in compost isn't an uncommon occurence, and just means that the compost still needs a little longer to finish. There are other ways to fix it, Max should check TMC if he's having a problem with that. The compost should not have smelled horribly. A slight, even rather strong amonia smell might be acceptable, maybe not even detrimental, but raw sewage should be avoided.
There were many small and several large rocks in the compost. That is for sure.
Found out that the strain is Gulf Coast, and the spawn was wheat from a multi-spore innoc. I've personally never grown GC, so I'm even more interested in how this turns out.

I believe you mean SHE'S saying, but anyway, okay, so my batch was definately not a good representation of the proper performance of the product because it was defective. In that case, since mine smelled horrible, just like taking the cover off of a septic tank, then it's no wonder it killed the mycelium.
Now that I've had a huge fight with Max, and he defends his product to the ends of the earth and blames me as the "unskilled cultivator", which I'm obviously not, WHAT DO I DO NOW?

That's exactly what I am doing, I've got a tray of EQ's pinning on Roadkill's tek, but cased in straight verm. and another one of Creepers done the same way almost ready to be transfered to fruiting conditions.? What I meant was, what do I do about the 20 lbs of unuseable Blue's Poo I bought?
Max said send it back for a 50% refund, but that's about what it would cost to ship, so I'm screwed.

I guess if you have a shit load (hehe) of horse poo, mix some blues poo with some horse poo and use it outside in a bed with spent casings, if you lose it all, oh well, but if you get some, then you come out a winner. And eveybody likes a winner.

trip, are you saying that you still have some of this stinky compost left? If so, I'll check TMC and see what he recomends. I remember reading a blurb in there that said if your amonia content is still too high at filling, you can do this to fix it. That should render your compost usable, although it doesn't address the issue that the compost should not have smelled like that when you received it.

I haven't gotten home yet, but have you kept it sealed up? I'll let you know for sure in a few hours, but it seems like the best thing to do is take it out of the bag and let it breathe. The amonia should just evaporate. I'll see what stamets says...

I was thinking of drying it completely and pasteurizing it, but I don't know if it's worth the trouble. I may lose even more spawn and that would suck. You know the old addage "Burn me once, shame on you. Burn me twice, shame on me!"
I'd like to just drop it on Max's head from a heliocopter. With all the rocks in it, it'd probably kill him, or at least knock some sense into him. LOL!

I told you I would pay the shipping as well, please get your facts straight before posting on the internet.
As for rocks or the odd chunk of wood, this compost includes stables scrapping of hay, etc and manure that is piled behind a barn. This is not a product made in a factory on a assembly line, this is the real stuff.
If your compost has a high ammonia content, perhaps from being sealed so long, just air it out. If anything, it is composted even more by now and will be a better product. Don't waste it.
You were one of the first customers and your compost was only partially composted. But I had read somewhere that partially composted horse manure was better for mushrooms and I had had such great success with Mr. G's B+, that it seemed a correct assumption. I thought my first few customers, those who got partially composted horse manure, would be getting the best deal. Perhaps the ammonia built up in the sealed bags during transit...you are on the other side of the continent, delivery took a few days.
Nevertheless, I stand by my product, it works as I have stated and as mycofile is expierencing. If you have these intermediate skills perhaps needed for grain/compost teks, then you'll figure out how to prepare the compost. As I stated when I sent it, 'let it dry if it seems too wet'. You stated moisture content was fine, maybe ammonia was bit high and it should have been aired out a bit and turned a few times.
It's only a few pounds, I've been flipping this 1000 lb 6 ft high windrow for a while now. I started out doing it by hand...then I got a pitchfork.
