    #584231 - 03/20/02 12:31 PM (21 years, 11 days ago)

i was at the friendly neighborhood nursury and i noticed they had big bags of dehydrated manure and composted manure. i was wondering if either of these would be worth trying. i havnt tried dung yet so it will be an experiment anyway. also is pasturization the best way to prepare the shit?

Dehydrated manure is what you wan't stay away from composted. try it you should get great results I can only seem to find composted amnure in my area kinda sucks.

Dehydrated manure has a high NPK ratio. Usually 9% Nitrogen. You want your N to be at around 2%.

Composted manure is at .5 to 1%, depending on the brand. I find supplementing the composted products, works pretty well.

Add approx. 1/2 lb of the dehydrated to 50 lbs of composted and mix thouroughly. Now your are at approx. 2% N.

Really...
I never get any results with composted.
It's always store bought composted manure. I've never tried dehydrated manure but was told it was better and I'm inclined to believe it because of my experience with composted.
Buy both kinds and try em both see which works better for you. Shouldn't be more than 3or4 bucks per bag.

Cow dung is more processed than horse dung, relative to when the feces leaves the ass of the animals. When cows digest their food, they have a modified esophagus for chewing cud(barfed up food) and regurgitating it for additional absorption via increased surface area. In other words, their digestive system is more efficient than a horse's digestive system. This is why I prefer to use horse shit over cow shit. Once the ammonia has evaporated or decomposed from the feces, horse shit provides more unprocessed cellulose than does cow shit. This means more nutrients are still locked up in the fiberous waste material. Consequently, when the dung is ready to use, you end up with less "free" nitrogen that contams. are looking to exploit. This is why I prefer to use horse dung over cow dung.

If I had access to horse shit on a steady basis, I too would be using it.
Horse manure is in the 1% range. Cow manure is in the .5 percent range.
TOTAL NITROGEN.
Horse manure IS slower release, as well.

Good post AZURE
