40lb bag of composted cow manure?
    #543704 - 02/07/02 12:45 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

went to farm and fleet yesterday looking for gypsum (they didn't have it). they did however have 40lb bags of composted cow manure for $1.29 a piece. the bag is white and has a picture of a cow head on it and it says "america's best." it says it's grade 0.5-0.5-0.5. something like: less than 0.5% nitrogen, 0.5% phosphoric acid, 0.5% potash. i'm pretty sure that's what is said- gonna go back there today and find out for sure.

would this work well as a bulk substrate?? how would you go about sterilizing it with a pressure cooker (8qt)? i'm in the process of making 12 quart jars of organic millet- could a few jars of this (fully colonized with p.c. b+) be mixed with, say, 10lbs of this composted cow manure (sterilized, of course)??

as usual, all replies are greatly appreciated.

It might work wonderfully, or not at all. IME composted manure is hit or miss. Try it. Pasteurise it for a couple hours at 160 deg or so, let it drain and cool. Then mix in about a 1-10 ratio of your millet to compost. You will know within a few days if it will work well or not.

I think the hit/miss depends on how the manure is composted. A lot of store bought compost comes from commercial mushroom growers. This stuff is great for plants, but sucks for growing mushrooms. The good compost comes straight from the compost pile and doesn't include a stop at the local shroomery. Usually the bags will say somewhere on them if they are good for growing mushrooms or not.

The only way I've had any success with store bought was to mix it with some straw or alfalfa and then pasturize it. Always brings great results. By itself I think It would be too much like mud.

they had timothy hay there too- would that work? could i mix some up in a quart jar and pasturize it that way? what ratios whould i use? compost:hay:water? anything else i should add? then i could just inocculate the jar with a few cc's and see if it would work that way- right?
