The Poo
Ok, Now I?m a Cow Shit Collector and all, but I?ve never worked with horse poo as of yet. I picked up a bag full of the above poo from my local horse stables out of a giant dumpsite full. I?ve never actually worked with the poo so I was surprised to see what it looked like. I?m more used to the cow pie style of poo. I would think this would be all right, but I wanted just a few more opinions.
Notes: There appear to be two formats of the poo; Clumps of ?turd? and then, all the rest. Its mixed in with alot of straw, which should be good, but also some wood chips and misc other things. This was my main consurn with the poo.
Any input is appreciated

Does cow shit work pretty good for you, 'collecter?? I was always under the impression that cow shit does not work well because of the process of going through 4 stomaches digests the nutrients too much. Do you get multiple flushes??

Yeah, that looks fine to me.
Hey, so you found a big horse stable mound? Id check that often for mushrooms...that is a very good place to look. You could have a goldmine there in a few months if you really are in FL.
I found about 1000 Panaeolus subbalteatus growing from a huge mound like that...

Are you being sarcastic?! I cant tell. But, if you dont think that cow shit is a good substrate for growing mushrooms, you are wrong. Manure has very high amounts of nitrogen, which mushrooms use as food. There is not a better substrate than manure to grow your mushrooms....and think, cubensis grow naturally from cow shit.

i was under the impression that all the drying and leaching was to rid the poo of nitrogen (see my thread "Poo Confusion")

lol, i think thats what it is at least.
Drying out the poo is to get rid of urine if i'm not mistaken.

That is correct sir Shit Collector! It is to get rid of the amonia (urine). I'm just about to use horse poo for MY first time as well, I'm going to be pauesterizing today! My poo looks more dry than that, yours still looks a little fresh just because of the dark spots I see... dry poo is lighter colored, when it's dark it usually means it still a little wet with some urine. That's I think anyways, i may be wrong!!
Hey, so what are you spawning on your poo? I got some BRF Creeper Jars just waiting to take the plunge into this nutrient full poo!!!:) Can't wait!!

i have to ask my stupid question for the day LOL
uhmmmm,......how did u go about asking for the poo at the local horse farm? (seriously!!) Nowwww for something not serious at all
Top 10 wayz to ask for poo at the horse stable.
#10.Im baking a chocolate poo cake for my ex! #9.Im the house poo cleaning dude. #8.We are using this to make new currency cus our dollar is so weak and shitty now so why not use something more appropriate. #7.The horse called us on their cell as a last alternative cus they had no more room to move. #6.We need them to throw as snowballs at our next government protest! #5.We are trying to gather as much shit as we can to build a new chemical manure weapon thats to be launced directly at bin laden's cave...we'll snuff his ass outta there. #4.We want to clone a million mr hankies!!! #3.Global Shitting is as much a concern as Global Warming. We need to complie our evidnece and get funding. #2.We're launching it into space on a NASA ship and we want to see its graviational effect. Ur poo could be the first on the moon. And the #1 way to ask for poo at the horse stable.....too many chix ask me out, so im gonna dab a lil here and a lil there as a way to deter them!!!!

LOL, going through the exact same thing =)
As for asking for the poo, I just went there and said, 'would you mind if i took some manure from you?' They didn't ask any questions or anything, just handed over the shit. Did I mention I held them at gunpoint while doing so?

That's my issue as well - seems like the fresh poo has all the nitrogen rich bacteria; and that leaching and pasteurization will remove these?
I have horse poo that was taken from a horse farm, it was outside in the snow for approximately 2 weeks, mixed with wood chips.
Should I dry in a garage with a ceramic heater? If so should I dry, then leach, then pasteurize? Seems redundant to me to dry, then leach (getting it wet again), then pasteurize.
Please help - going to need to know very soon.
