Re: Blue Pearls Explorer's Thread - Panaeolus Cinctulus Sclerotia - Blue Truffles [Re: Subfinder]
    #26076537 -

PLEASE READ THIS if you are one of the recipients of the Pan Cinctulus var "Warren County" prints send-out.

Thank you for your patience in receiving your promised prints, they are all now sent out.  Tweeq & I finally received the prints from Subfinder, that took way longer than KapnDank as we are international.  KapnDank sent out over a week ago and many of you on his list have already received it.  Those of you on Tweeq's or 1WithU's list will be receiving it shortly.  All prints have been mailed out.

Now please be sure to give a 5 star trade rating to Subfinder AND to your sender of the prints.  Some of us would appreciate the positive ratings to participate in other fun on this site.

For your convenience, here are the links to give positive trade ratings:

Subfinder
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/newrating.php?id=441936

1WithU
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/newrating.php?id=368419

KapnDank
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/newrating.php?id=458156

Tweeq
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/newrating.php?id=439523
Those of you lucky enough to be on Tweeq's list also get a bonus print of something.  Isn't he a nice guy?

Once you receive your prints please start them up and post on the Blue Pearls Explorer's Thread about your adventure!!!  Good luck & have fun!

Color me intrigued!

Forgive the new post, signed up just to chime in here... (but maybe I should actually participate instead of just stealing someone's fantastic oat tek for my oyster mushrooms and running away?)

I've been spending the summer hunting for this species - it's the only species I know of that is both native to my area and active, so it was on my list of 'things to catch'.

I think the sclerotia experiments are fantastic - I've never run across a reference to P. cinctulus producing sclerotia - but there's some pretty solid proof here.

IF I manage to find a specimen, I think I know what I might be able to contribute.  I've had a question for a long time now - given that rabbits have very similar digestive structures to horses (they're both hind-gut fermenters), would rabbit manure serve as an appropriate replacement for horse manure?  I'd love to experiment with this species to find out.

Anyhow, I may pop in here if/when I find a specimen just to let you know how that turns out - given that rabbits are more common city-pets than horses, maybe a successful result on that experiment might further expand the range of this species to even more people?

I actually use tortoise manure for my pans, I have a big redfoot that produces large turds, idk about rabbits,
BUT (Correct me if im wrong) it seems that herbivore manure works universally.

P.S. welcome to shroomery

Welcome to Shroomery Eigholte, and honored that you signed up to chime in here on this thread!  I don't know for sure but speculate that your rabbit idea *might* work, considering I have read in my research that timothy hay & pellets work too.  How about you give it a try and report to us your success (or failure) so that we may all learn something?

I have ONE print left of Subfinder's Warren print.  If you PM me your address I can send it out to you so that you can join in the fun.  Please be sure to post in this thread about your experiments, and do the trade rating (see above post).

Again, welcome to this site and hope now that your cherry has popped to see you around here, and that you enjoy this enlightening hobby.

Thank you!

I read your offer this afternoon, and was heart-warmed.  I just *might* take you up on it...  (Especially if things don't go to plan below)

BUT!  Of all things, I think I may have found my first wild specimens today!  I am waiting on some nice dark spore prints and my spore microscopy, but I am probably ~95% sure I found a legit P. cinctulus.

Wish me luck!  We may have a second wild strain, fingers crossed.  I found it on my local Legislature grounds, of all places.  Which means it's probably for the best I found it today - After Canada day, it would likely have been a trampled mess of former-mushrooms.  Given how cool and dry my climate usually is, I'm hoping that this ends up being a monstrous sclerotia producer.

So I packed up ~30 mushrooms and made a break for it. We'll see how many of those caps give me a jet-black print with nice, smooth spores under the microscope.

This is the nicest-looking cluster I found today.

Ya know, I think you did actually succeed in finding the good stuff!  Print them on foil.  If they are black like a sharpie black then you're golden!  If not then PM me to hook up a fellow Canadian.  Welcome to the fun!

Woke up this morning to find off-black prints instead.  Shucks.

I am a little disappointed, but I'll take it as a minor victory in hunting that I found the right kind of habitat and got really, really close.   I have one other spot marked out as likely habitat - and it's a big area, by a horse stable.  So maybe I'll check there on the weekend.

Bummer.  PM me to get the last print I have available and still try your luck at the horse farm this weekend.  Let's get you on board with this project.  I admire your attempts to find a local cinct FWIW.  I too am determined to find my own locally, and encourage others to find one too, simply for the sake of proving that anyone can find one locally to enjoy blue pearls, but it seems for us city folk this is a little more challenging.  I drove by numerous horse farms, but don't know how to ask them for permission to look through their shit pile for magic mushrooms.  Haha!  So close... and yet so far.

Hey (or should I say "hay"), does anyone have a tip on how to approach a local farmer to ask them for some horse dung?  What can you say to the farmer to score a bucket of crap without them knowing the real purpose?

It's for the compost going in your vegetable or flower bed.

Yeah just collect some hpoo while youre there "for your compost". That's not really a strange request so you may find someone nice enough to let you collect some. Some people are weird about letting you near their stables though. Either way even if there's no pans you won't be leaving empty handed  I actually have another load of hpoo on the way that I'm just gonna leave it in a large pile to compost while I get some pan spawn ready. You can always find a use for it lol just make sure you dehydrate it if you plan to store it in buckets or whatever otherwise the enzymes/ bacteria or whatever continues to break it down in the bucket into a undesirable consistency. It becomes mushy and when it dries it's kinda like shit cement
