Does this work well? It seems this would be perfect for my needs. Grain jars colonize too quickly for me to do my normal G2G rotation cycle, while my agar plates take a bit longer to colonize. I'm concerned about recovery after busting up the colonized substrate. The strain I have does not look well after I bust the grain jars up.

I have done my share of both AIO and pasteurized substrate for pans. For AIO you want to keep it on the dry side. As many others I do prefer grains to pasteurized substrate, because it is what is giving me the most consistent results.

When the substrate is sterilized all the beneficial bacteria is killed and that makes the substrate a real inviting habitat for things you don't want growing in it. With pasteurizing you get rid of most of the unwanted mold and other bad things, but keep the beneficial bacteria as a defence against the unwanted stuff.

Pans move pretty fast under the right conditions though so I've seen some members getting away with using sterilized substrate, hood or not.

Other than the moisture level, are there any other issues you had with AIO. You mention that pasteurized has given you more consistency, what part/s of AIO were inconsistent compared to pasteurized?

Yeah, I get the argument for "beneficial bacteria" helping to keep the substrate from contaminating before the myc has a chance to fully colonize. But I personally have always believed that is a method to use when you cannot ensure sterile conditions, and that sterilizing was always the safer bet if conditions could be met. When I grew cubes in the past, or the oysters at my farm, I always pasteurized due to the large amount of substrates required. But for my pan grows, I'm not really trying to go big. Each tray only holds a max of 1.8qt, so it's doable for me to sterilize.

Yeah, I've noticed the myc is WAY faster than even oysters!

Last night I prepped up some AIO substrate to run in half-pint test jars, and will PC them tonight. Going with 50/50 composted manure/verm, with oat berries and RGS. I like the thought of not having to bust up the myc and just fruiting from the test jars, so I'll give it a try until I get the fruiting conditions down. Once I've successfully fruited I'll revisit fruiting from the trays I have.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Learning a new species after years of not growing any makes me feel like a noob again. But the challenge is what I wanted, so I'm not bitchin'...

So with AIO bags especially, because of the volume, it's very easy to get pooling, even with a semi dry substrate and pans do not like that at all. I also felt they weren't as interested in colonizing after I spawned a AIO so often enough things would contaminated because they got lazy.

Pans don't really utilize grains like cubes even though they will colonize them so spawning grains to substrate makes them tear through it in days.

But if you can keep things sterile, don't want to take it further then second flush and never break up the AIO block from a bag or fruit straight out the AIO jar then you might be fine without pasteurizing and get consistent results.

Don't know what kind of cow manure compost you are going to use, but I never needed more then 30%, they also love straw.

Bisporus tax.

The manure I've been using is composted horse and cow, composted with straw bedding and probably a bit of sawdust too. I got 5 cubic yards for the garden this year and thought I'd give it a try before finding another source.

I'm sure you can use that, just need to find the right amountz with it having straw and sawdust 50% might not be off at all, carry on

The trays I made that I've been trying to fruit for almost a month were 50% coir, 29% verm, and 21% composted manure. That's why I went 50/50 verm/composted manure on these test jars, thinking that the composted manure may be too leached of nitrogen. I'll do the next round of test jars with some Black Kow  if these don't produce. I've got some ground straw pellets that I may use in the future, but it's so fine once hydrated that I'll have to use a small amount.

Hey folks, wondering if I can get some eyes on this plate and see what y’all think is going on.

I’m attempting pans for the first time and got passed this culture as a smash wedge. I already josex poked and ran it through a BRF puck to dispense with any hidden bacteria and then transferred back to 2% LME agar.

It’s running very slowly, and doesn’t look the way I would expect from seeing photos of pan myc, but I don’t have the experience working with the genus to make a good diagnosis.

Any help is much appreciated!

I don't have much experience with Pans, but that looks like good myc.

Quick question for the experienced Pan growers. Is Pan myc sturdy enough to throw extra agar jars in the fringe for a while?

A month? Yeah wouldn't have much hope unfortunately. Many use black cow, can't get it here, so I use another cow manure compost and the easiest recipe I've done is 70/30 coir/cow manure compost.

I believe Strawboy use straw pellets so let's hope he stops by and share some insight.

I haven't had much luck with stalling any pans really, they rely on speed and anything stopping them makes them lazy and something else moves in, just my experience though.

My process for clean pan mycelium has always been this:

Spore print -> T0 to check growth -> T1 Cabin Sequester -> T2 is usually ready for grain

If I don't see good growth by then I toss the line and start over.

If you still have your BRF puck, I'd put a small piece of that through a CS and see what transfers look like from there.

For me, nothing has been as effective at bacteria as a CS so I've stopped doing BRF pucks and Josex Pokes.
