It depends on the scientist. When science is practiced correctly, dissent is welcome, when it can be empirically supported. The greatest achievement for someone in a scientific field, would be to disprove conventional wisdom.

Yup.  Another reason I disagree with bodhisatta is the fact that anyone that goes against conventional wisdom on climate science is actually given instant celebrity status by the right, even if their argument is wrong, as the ones above turned out to be.

This is an important point, one that counters the "appeal to authority" argument used against the scientists supporting the concensus view.

I think this would be an 'appeal to popularity', wouldn't it? Or maybe somewhere between the two. Regardless, I don't think it counters the appeal. It's just an illustration of some possible conflict of interest on the part of the dissenters. Amp bringing up 'Nobel Prize Winners' in the first place was clearly an appeal to authority though.

As I said earlier, if you already have a sound argument, I don't see anything wrong with making reference to the number or prestige of likeminded folks. It serves to bolster your argument, if it's not the only argument being put forth.

Now I am curious... Is it really a fallacious 'appeal to authority/popularity' at all, if it is not the basis of your argument?

I dont think so.

Its about climate change- set in the future where a man in an archive building of civilisation (seed bank, libraries etc) looking back on current era news reports and wondering why humans didn't act in time.

Just made me think of it because we are still debating this shit.

You know, the court of public opinion doesn't differ so drastically from a criminal court. One shred of doubt, and the jury is still out. At least on certain hot-button issues, when moneyed interests have a stake in the matter. We see the same shit from religious institutions too... If they perceive they have poked the slightest hole in the case that science has presented against their superstitions, they feel they have won.

I wish the art of critical thinking was aggressively emphasized, as a cornerstone of education in this country.

I'm not an adobe/photoshop guru, so I don't know what to make of all of this. Your video is equally compelling to mine, given my limited understanding of how these programs work.

PDF document scans when 'optimized' automatically create layers in illustrator so the first video has no basis.

Good point, but apparently there are many other inconsistencies. I haven't watched BBW's video yet, but I will after this.

Apparently in 1961, they wouldn't have written "African" for his father's race. They would have written "Negro", as they wrote "white" or "Asian". I can't confirm that myself, but I could definitely see the age of political correctness causing someone to make this mistake while doctoring his certificate.

Also, there was a small biography in a Harvard pamphlet that identified him as being born in Kenya.

It's basically just a video showing the same thing with another scan. I'm open to look at each piece of evidence as it comes - in the case of Africa/Negro - etc. They made a distinction because he was literally born in Africa and not African-American?

The other thing you posted is true though. Of course it is not difficult for a talented editor to create forgeries of documents that look genuine. So I'm undecided really until I see solid evidence.

As far as the Negro vs African thing, this can easily be explained by the fact that he was, in fact, of direct African descent.

Exactly.  This site has an hour's worth of videos to make absolutely certain there's no doubt in anyone's mind that the layers mean nothing.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

Lmao... Thanks Falcon. Overkill, as usual, and yet again, it has probably fallen on plugged ears.

Hopefully not though, as this was meant to be an exercise in critical thinking, if I remember correctly.

Even if the layers mean everything in the world, I wouldn't dream of taking it upon myself to defend Obama. In fact, the list of Dems I would defend is probably a single digit % of congress people. What's even more sad is the sheer number of people who hold my same exact position on that matter. So much for Democracy.

Shit... I just watched this video again.. Fucking hilarious. I love that he just keeps going, like each one of his comparisons is of utter importance to the discussion. This is why we need more Southern Democrats!

Bernie....oh...  :lolsy:

I remember one of his speeches telling people 'you have a vote...and you have a vote...and you have a vote....' and people fucking cheering like, oh, my he just said something so special.

They failed to realize that they already have a vote.  Just because they don't exercise it doesn't mean they don't have one. :rofl2:

What a bunch of fools that listened to this idiot.

Years of Neoliberalism has conditioned people to accept their current political position and that there is nothing they can do to change this.
